Title: Game Boy clones?
Post by: Blue Protoman on February 26, 2009, 07:57:45 am
Well, the Game Boy's patent is going to expire this year.  It's gonna hit that magic 20-year tech mark in a few months.  That means Game Boy clones will become legal soon.

Your thoughts?

I don't envision any clones showing up.  We had NES clones long before the NES's hardware patent expired.  There are very few -- if any -- gameboy clones out there.  I don't see why they would suddenly start appearing now.

One can hope.  ;)
But you're probably right.

Expiring patents don't certainl mean clone consoles. I've never seen or heard of a Master System, SG-1000 or Sega Mark III clone for example. And that's just about as old as the Famicom.

Apparently until recently the South Korean Government forbade Japanese companies from selling any electronics in Korea, thus all Japanese game machines have clone produced by domestic Korean companies. This one is a SMS clone made by Samsung. Samsung also made Megadrives, Saturns, and Dreamcasts for the Korean market. I like the wierd Astro-boy like mascot.

Plus we already have a bunch of different portable media players, that are capable of every gameboy game and a whole lot more.  Portable pirates are as different to home consoles pirates as the two types of platform are in the first place, IMO.

You know what would really be cool?  A TV GameBoy,  It's like a regular, "play-it-on-your-TV" system.  You can use GB carts.

Yeah I don't know why anyone would start cloning game boys nowadays. The console is long dead, can't see alot of meny being made.

I hope some savvy pirates will do it for the love of piracy :)

plenty of gba games are still being pirated though.  I just don't think the GBA has the charm of that green dot-matrix screen :)

It's called the super gameboy player. It's a cart on the SNES that lets you play gameboy games on your TV. There is also one for the gamecube.

I meant a stand-alone console.  As in, not an add-on.
