Hey all....
I always have my ears open for new title recommendations.
My SFC library is not nearly as large as my SNES, NES, or Famicom libraries.
I have in my collection:
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest VI
Elfaria
Shin Megami Tensei
Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu II)
On the way I have:
Assault Suits Valken
Super Ninja Kun (got hooked on this series playing the Famicom titles).
Are there any games that can be recommended?
I like space shooters, platformers, action games... the occasional beat 'em up, and do enjoy RPGs...though having foreign language faqs/walk throughs totally make life easier here... since I cannot read or speak Japanese. I might learn some basics one day just to make import gaming a little easier... but that is neither here, nor there for the moment.
That's MOTHER 2 in his case.
My picks:
Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie
All Ganbare Goemon games
All Yu Yu Hakusho
Final Fantasy 4,5, and 6
Rockman 7
Rockman X, X2, X3, Soccer
Rockman & Forte
Bahamut Lagoon
Yeah, it's MOTHER 2 in Japan, but it's just plain aweseome.
I would also recommend Street Fighter II (whichever revision came last), and F-Zero.
I used to rent F-Zero a lot. Dunno why I never got that game. Tons of fun. Though, I would get Earthbound as the SNES release... easier to read English... I'm surfing for foreign language faqs for Mother and Sweet Home as is. A bit harder to get through that way, but worth it, since they're neat for the collection, and have solid reviews and fan base.
Oooh...Rockman X.... DUH. That was a good series. Never owned many of them myself for the SFC/SNES, but I have a couple discs with some Mega Man X games on them for the PSX. Hard to go wrong with almost anything that is Mega Man/Rock Man.
Can I get some details about the Yu Yu Hakusho, and the Ganbare Goemon games? I liked the YuYu Hakusho cartoon, though I haven't watched a lot of it. SFII is almost a dead ringer... plus I heard that there were details left out of the US release...so that makes even better sense to me.
Super Famicom?
F-Zero of course (insert shameless plug of my review here. Oh wait.....here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9o5_W6hn9k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5Kxaxqpbco&feature=channel_page
Super Famicom Wars (GOOD LUCK FINDING IT THOUGH LOL)
Super Famicom Wars was never sold in stores. To have a copy you have to have had a SFC data cartridge and mail it to Nintendo to get them to put it on there. I was extremely lucky to have found a SFC data cart that had Super Famicom Wars on it, and although I paid $60ish for it, I still lucked out as the seller was unsure of even what it was. If you can find it, get it. Its the missing link between the dated Famicom Wars and Advance Wars. If you like TBS, this is worth getting.
I also recommend Rockman & Forte (Megaman & Bass)
Until Megaman 9 was finally released, many Megaman noobs would repeatedly insist that this is Rockman 9. It's actually more like Megaman 8.5. The main difference from all the other classic series games is that you can play as Forte (Bass). Forte can dash, double jump, rapidfire, and shoot in any direction but down.
Lastly, off the top of my head I recommend A little known gem of a platformer called Run Saber.
Seriously, Run Saber is like Strider for the SNES. Correction: make that Strider on acid on the SNES. Its for SNES or SFC, so no need to go looking for the SFC version and paying through the nose. Its an obscure little title that should cost no more than $5 or so. Get it.
Games that I consider being "Must Haves" for SFC...
AREA 88
Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie
Ninja Warriors Again
AXELAY
Dracula XX
Super Mario World
Super Mario Kart
Star Fox
Street Fighter Zero 2
Rushing Beat
WILD GUNS
Hagane
Contra Spirits
Phalanx!
Run Saber (Don't know if it was called that in Japan)
that's just what comes off the top of my head though. I'm currently myself
in a Super Famicom buying spree, though I just made a damn good Mega Drive
for SFC trade with a guy I know, keeping only the titles on MD I couldn't ever live
without. As of 2009, it's looking more and more like my pro MD self has gone over
to the SFC side of the force. ***No doubt about it though, you really can't go wrong
on the Super Fami.
SMRPG and the Superscope games
Dracula XX
Did you mean Castlevania Dracula X? I've already got that one. When I said "modest SFC" I mean SFC only. Ha ha ha! Though I appreciate all recommendations, since the spirit is definitely there.
See, SNES....
I have...
Final Fantasy II and III
Mystic Quest
Paladin's Quest
Super Adventure Island
Frogger
Plok
Gradius III
Chrono Trigger
Illusion of Gaia
Legend of Zelda
Drakken
Mario Kart
Equinox
MK
MK II
Donkey Kong Country and DKCII
Super Mario World
Secret of Mana
Ok...l don't remember all of them....
I have more NA SNES carts than Jap SFC. BUT, since I shamelessly rip out my region tabs... on my official SNES, and on the FC Twin... yeah... you get the idea.
Well as far as I've known the game's title in Japan was
Dracula XX, just as it was Dracula X: Rondo of Blood for PCE, though
XX has proven to be a revisionist original redoing of the PCE game and not
so much a port. Thus for the North American Region it was retitled to the
more common "Castlevania" title. That's how I understand it anyhow, just
as one of the entries (in the series) was called
Vampire Killer, which IMO
is what the series should have been called anyhow, as I never dug the play on
the name Transylvania.
I"ve only played up to stage 2 of XX today on my Super Famicom (it came in earlier
today) and strangely enough, I actually like the SFC version a bit more than the PCE
Super CD-ROM one that I coveted for so long. Though it would be cool if Maria Renard
is somehow selectable in the SFC version too. I only ever played the SFC/SNES XX
game for liek 5 minutes back in the late 90s so for me this is a brand new experience,
and I find it much more to my liking than Super Castlevania.

Dracula XX
Did you mean Castlevania Dracula X? I've already got that one. When I said "modest SFC" I mean SFC only. Ha ha ha! Though I appreciate all recommendations, since the spirit is definitely there.
I also find Dracula X much harder than many of the other Castlevania installments. Very fun, but it does take some work. I haven't even gotten all that far in it.
The amazing Rondo of Blood was converted into one of the worst Castlevania games, Dracula X(X), in my opinion.

Both are certainly worth your time, but as for a solid fan base? I'm fairly sure Sweet Home is a largely unearthed gem.
As for text-light SFC/SNES recommendations:
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World
Pilotwings: if found at a low price, it's actually a highly enjoyable little simulator
F-Zero
Donkey Kong Country 1-2
Star Fox
SimCity
Mortal Kombat

Really, why do feel that way?
I've owned the PCE "Rondo of Blood" several times between 1997 and 2005, and I still feel it's the best of the series both 2-D as well as 3-D... but I find the *different* yet same approach that is
Dracula XX to be pretty good. In fact I like it a lot better than VAMPIRE KILLER on the Mega Drive. If you mean because the game is much shorter than the PCE one, I can see that... and there's going to be no contest in the audio department simply due to Rondo's CD-ROM versus SFC chip music. But why do you not like it?
I agree the PCE game is by far superior, the SNES "version" is a piss poor. If it were called something else it'd be decent but to called it Dracula X is an insult.
I'm going to keep this SFC-only.
Doremi Fantasy
Ghost Sweeper Mikami
Violinist of Hamelin
Front Mission (granted this has a port on the DS)
Front Mission Gun Hazard
Traverse: Starlight & Prairie
Lady Stalker
Wizardry Bane of Cosmic Forge
Parodius Da
Ein no Filena
Puyo Puyo
Torneko's Mystery Dungeon (or whatever it's called)
I own about 2/3rds of these, the rest I've played thru emulators. All of em are great games tho a couple are probably hard to find in cartridge format.
dracula xx, zelda no densetu, super metroid
just for amusement you should buy (or at least try) "Cho Aniki: Bakuretsu Rantou Hen" ;D ;D
it's a brawler, but the characters and backgrounds are hilarious:
also knowing Japanese or not doesn't matter with this game.
Wow, I was under the impression all this time that "Cho Aniki"
was a homo erotic shooter with flying muscle bound g string
wearing dudes. Guess I learn something new everyday.
:D
This looks like a fighting game in the same series
My picks:
Flying Hero
Sutte Hakun
Cotton 100%
Do Re Mi Fantasy
Rendering Ranger
Macross Scrambled Valkyrie
Magical Pop'n
Majyuuou
Battle Cross
Ghost Sweeper Mikimi
Sanrio World Smash Ball
Super Back to the Future II
Godzilla: Kaijuu Daikessen
Ganbare Goemon 2
Jaki Crush
Why am I the only one here to say Earthbound/MOTHER 2?

Why am I the only one here to say Earthbound/MOTHER 2?
Maybe not everyone is "into" RPGs? Outside of
Chrono Triggerand the "Breath of Fire" games I never really cared for them on the
SFC/SNES myself. Which brings back to one of those old dividing
factors of gaming fandom from back in the day. Camp #1> Was
all action/adventure/shooter all the time ... Camp #2> was
90%
RPG, 10% anything else ... and Camp #3> was *VS. FIGHTING*
fanbois who once they got the SF 2 and Fatal Fury bug, most of the
other genres just kind of faded away for them. That last camp usually
ended up with a Neo:Geo.
I do admit though that Earthbound was a good game, having played
it about 8 years after it was released. Most of what I was interested in
RPG wise never made the jump to US shores in English language and
while I'm aware of the translation/hack ROMS floating around, I wouldn't
play them unless there was someway to somehow put them onto an actual
SFC Cassette and play it on a physical media. Probably more trouble and
expensive than it's worth really.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I loved me some Final Fantasy III (VI) bitd too.
Oh no, I am into RPGs, but I want to try and keep them in English, if possible. I have foreign language Faqs for the 2 Dragon Quests, but I need to find one for Elfaria and Shin Megami Tensei.
Any opinions on Final Fight Guy, or Final Fight Tough? I loved that game in the arcade, and even rented it from time to time... never found a copy for sale. I imagine most people haven't tossed their copies of it. I emulate it on MAME often, but emulators, even good ones don't really approach the feel of a controller and console. I don't have the time or resources to build a MAME cab yet... but it's one of those long term goals.
Lady Stalker is one that I have been wondering about. I know that it's the sequel to Landstalker, but never played that one. Feedback?
I'd like to reccomend:
- Pop 'n' Twinbee
- Zelda, link to the past
- obviously the mario collection
- all the other obvious ones like mario kart, rockman and forte etc.
In fact, there's a great book that lists all the games ever released, I recommend that as it is fully illustrated and everything :)
games I posted are the sfc games I own that I play the most. RPGS are a bit pointless since my japanese level isn't that great
Buy EB and an adaptor to play it on your SFC.
You don't even need an adapter if you care about your cart's cosmetic appearance. just crack it open and put in the PCB by itself.

Yea it's one of 2 games in the series that's not a shooter....
also I should add "Prince of Persia" (the original) for the SNES.... so much fun.

Lady Stalker is awesome. It has random battles and no jump button, tho, so it really doesn't play like Landstalker that much (the battles are still action-oriented, but they occur randomly, meaning you can't see the enemy until they pop out of nowhere). It's a really fun game and doesn't exactly require Japanese except for a few puzzles. Good thing there's a walkthru on gamefaqs.
I have 2 sfcs and one of the adapters. The 15$ adapter is worth not busting all my games apart. Although the thread says "super famicom recommendations" so I didn't know that also includes snes games
Drakon,
I am trying to focus on SFC, like my collecting with Famicom, I like to try and get titles that didn't get a US release. Or, if for some reason the SFC title is superior, then that would also be a reason for recommendation.
So far I won from eBay (waiting on shipping)
Super Ninja Kun
Final Fight Guy
Final Fight 2
Assault Suits Valken
SNES/SFC is something I really enjoy... much like most other consoles... but the Atari VCS/2600, the NES/Famicom, SNES/SFC and PSX/PS2 are the consoles that get the most love in my collection/collecting habits. In fact, I just got a box with 6 "new" Famicom games in it... new to me that is.
In terms of SFC-only releases, Ganbare Goemon 2 and 3 are a blast and are more than worth your time, as well as Super Ninja Kun and Rockman and Forte. I also really like Akira Toriyama's Go Go Ackman! series, which can be purchased for a pretty cheap price, and are fun little platformers.

What do you mean about not busting games apart? Why would you need to do that in the first place?
non US titles? okay seiken densetu 3 then
Seiken densetsu 3 is Secret of Mana 2 isn't it? Would be neat to flesh that series out some more.

well "secret of mana" is really seiken densetu 2
"well "secret of mana" is really seiken densetu 2"
Yeah, I have both of these, the US and Japanese release. I have only heard of the third game, never seen it. I tried to anglicize it, but not sure if an English title equivalent exists.... "Secret of Mana 2" is the only way I have heard it referred to.
If imports well the Ranma 1/2 fighting games would be a great addition!! ;D
I've seen some of the Ranma games floating around. I even found a bundle of all 4. Might have to toss in on those when I get some more money (it's getting kinda tight at the moment).
Final Fight 2 is WAY fun, and Assault Suits Valken is a fast paced shooter that will be much more enjoyable once I get the aiming scheme down a little bit better.
How is the SFC Parodius? I REALLY like the Famicom Parodius Da! I mean, from my experience Gradius has been a solid series, and even the parody is fun as can be.
If you like Gradius III, you'll like the SFC Parodiuses(Parodiusi?)

DEFINITELY get Parodius Da! on the SFC, it's the best one in the series, as well as the most ported version. Also pick up Pop'n Twinbee, which is not only a great shooter, it's also one of the most beautiful games on the SFC ever made.
the best Parodius Da is the deluxe version for the Saturn.
I'm curious about Final Fight 2, as it was mentioned twice in this thread (at least to my knowledge). Whats the difference between the SFC and SNES versions? When I looked it up on youtube, it seemed there was an additional female character for the SFC version...

Gonzo...
I only have the SFC version for Final Fight 2. It's pretty fun. There is a female character in it, I just don't recall what her name was. Pretty fast moving character with a good special. Is there no female character in the US version?

Maki the Kunoichi (minus the hood on her head)
IS THE GAME (Final Fight 2) as far as I'm concerned, but outside of that I found Final Fight Tough/Final Fight 3 to be the better of the two games. I wouldn't be surprised if there were differences between the US version and Japan, but I don't seem to see any.
Just figured I'd give this a friendly bump.
I've been trying to find a bunch of Side Scrolling beat-em ups like Streets of Rage or Final Fight for SFC but havent found anything of interest.
Games that don't take themselves all that seriously (and dont play like crap, haha) like Parodius are welcomed too :)
I would recommend Sengoku Denshou.
I can't reccommend Flying Hero enough. Its a shmup that's so fun to play, doesn't take itself seriously, and makes you want to come back for more. Check it out on youtube sometime.

Seiken Densetsu 3 shows up on Ebay but at high BIN prices. I asked Alex at Risingstuff.com and they're about to get it CIB for around $30 shipped or so. Regardless of where you buy it, I wouldn't pay more than that for it. People try to rip you off when you want to buy the big name titles, but just b/c it's from Japan and a big name title doesn't make it rare or expensive.
I'm looking into possibly getting some (or all) of the Yu Yu Hakusho games for the SFC.
Can anyone tell me what it's like and what they like about it and why they would recomend that game? I like the anime series but know nothing of the games.
I'm surprised no one mentioned these games:
Energy Breaker(Great graphics and sound, sweet gameplay and growth system, overall it's 6/6)
Bounty Sword (Overall great tactical game with sweet graphics)
Fuurai no Shiren (insanely hard, sequel to toruneko no daibouken)
Tactics Ogre(Sweet game, everybody knows that)
Seima Juuden : Beasts and Blades(Also, a great tactical game, although controls are "unnatural")
Also, any square game rocks ass.
mog123, are all those Yu Yu Hakusho games?
no, those are regular(well, not really regular, they're awesome) SFC games
I think a fun side-scrolling brawler for the Sufami is Psycho Dream. It plays more like a shmup tho (like Monster Lair on the TG CD, if you'd played that). You basically have a sword and walk around smacking enemies with it and collecting powerups so that beams of energy shoot out of it.
You should really try Captain Tsubasa 3. That game kicks ass!!!
My ideal games for Super Famicom
Neugier: Umi to Kaze no Koudou
Yoshi no Kuruppon: Oven de Cookie (Yoshi's Cookie is also included)
Hanafuda
New Yatterman
Super Mario Collection
Undake 30: Same Game Mario Version
The Mahjong Touhaiden
Special Tee Shot
Mario no Super Picross
Theme Park
Syvalion
Star Fox
Super Mario Kart
Hey i have a sfam question... Will a super famicom play snes games?
Technically it does, but you'd have to heavily mod the cartridge slot to make SNES games fit, or remove the top cover every time you want to play a SNES game.
Oh ok, cause i thought that tabs were the only cartridge difference...
SNES games are physically larger. SFC games will fit perfectly on a de-tabbed SNES slot with room to spare, but SNES games won't fit on a SFC slot, not without some serious hacking.
Electrically US and JP games are exactly the same. The only difference is the physical one.
Ok thanks for the info. Ill probably get a snes them.
Super Earth defence force, ten times better than Gradius or R-type.
Edit: what about Snes Jr? will it play both snes & Sfam games?
Yup,it plays super fami games just fine.
I would recommend Mother 2,hoshi no kirby super deluxe, super mario collection, super mario world, super puyo, and super donkey kong 3. I own the u.s. versions of all but Mother 2,I have it.I don't think there is one for super puyo though.

I don't understand how cutting the tabs would "ruin" it. You don't see the tabs most of the time and they're only chunks of plastic. It's not like removing them causes the system to malfunction or anything. Removing them doesn't even affect the stability of the carts.
Yea I ruined my 10 dollar snes jr so it can play super fami games. :D
For one I bought the console broken, had to replace the fuse then I added a led to the snes then I gave the console a black paint job.
Also a game genie will not play every snes or super fami game.
