Eh? Anyone play table-top RPGs? I have GURPS(http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/) and Dungeons & Dragons,(http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/welcome) but I pretty much only do anything with D&D. I will not be picking up D&D fourth edition for two reasons;
-Rule changes
-I have like no money for 3 new rulebooks.
So I stick with 3.5. Any opinions.. or discussion... Or whatever?
I've never played D&D or the many other similar games, though I did play Mage Knight and Mech Warrior years ago.
However, I do have a Vampire: The Dark Ages large hard cover book and a 1979 (3rd ed. of the '74) Dungeons & Dragons book (babysitter left it at the house back in the 80s). The Vampire book has some awesome looking art in it, and even the D&D cover is awesome looking...only reason I even still have them I'm sure :P (well, I certainly bought the Vampire book based on looks..got it cheap too). If anyone wants my D&D book, I'd take $8 shipped for it (It is in fantastic shape--practically looks new).
I used to play CYBERPUNK 2020 by R. Talsorian Games quite a bit in the mid 90s (between my Junior and Senior years) in Senior High School... and a little bit before then I played the occasional "Dungeons & Dragons" outing, but outside of two other decent players and one kick ass DM, most of the others that ended up in our quests usually fucked it up for everyone else. Most adventures got marred down by everyone wanting their character *to get laid* and dumb shit like that. I remember playing a Barbarian character who was hella strong but had an Intelligence of like 4. That's how I rolled Apgar (my character), so I made a point of truly getting into the role of a savage brute, who himself had a sexual lust... and that got most of our party killed outside a pub.
Outside of that though, I did play a fusion of the table top Hexigon strategy game BATTLETECH with Mech Warrior, which usually made the games pretty interesting. I fought for House Kurita of the Draconis Combine piloting the WARHAMMER, from the FASA 2nd Edition that was really a Tomahawk from SDF Macross. Lasted for a bit, but eventually my guy got killed. The thing I always wanted to do (thanks to EGM) was to hit up Chicago at the FASA Centre and play what at that time was a hellacious 3-D Virtual Reality simulation of being inside those Mechs. But it never happened and the place closed a long time ago. Then finally in 1999 I managed together a few people and we played the R. Talsorian adaptation of Armored Trooper VOTOMS (my all time fave Anime), but most of the players had never watched the 1983 TV series, and really couldn't get into it, mostly due to the purposely ugly mecha in the universe, and these dudes were used to playing RIFTS and ROBOTECH.
/\ Somehow I forgot about playing Warhammer 40k...I had a bunch of stuff, but was young and sucked at it--had plenty of fun making/painting the models.
I would play Warhammer... but it's like a jillion dollars to just make one army.
I enjoy checkers.
I am a demon at Connect 4. We play for half shots, and you keep track of how many the loser takes... and if the loser wins one, the oppenent has to take an equal amount of shots the loser already had.
Hmm, makes me want to wake the wife up all of a sudden
for a while. Then I quit as soon as I realized that everyone who plays that sort of thing is severely messed up.

Yeah, because if you enjoy RPGs, you're the devil.

Guys I think what he's referring to has nothing to do with the Media's over saturation coverage in the 80s about D&D being the den of the devil, thanks in no small part to extremist fundamental Christian "special interest groups" and a killing (I forget the guy involved) who's impetus started from that game. I think what *Drakon* is getting at, is that a huge portion of the people who play these tabletop RPGs and strategy games are
socially inept, and often times don't really know how to turn off "the fantasy" aspect of the various quests. In fact the very DM I mentioned as of 2009 is the perfect example of this. The guy is like 32 going on 33, has never held a job longer than 3 weeks, got booted out of the Army (though it was an honorable discharge) for a problem he didn't cause but didn't help in rectifying... and he lives with a friend of his from back in Elementary school, downloading/watching Japanimation shows off Torrents, and plays Worlds of Warcraft something like 19 hours out of a 24 hour period. He's never been interested in women, never been laid and doesn't care if he does or not, and is not motivated to do much of anything.
He's beyond super intelligent, a very good artist in several styles, but in his mind "never good enough" so he refuses to move forward with his skills, which pissed me off because if I had his skills... well I'd have probably made 10 to 35 semi successful "Underground" Graphic Novels possibly picked up by a known publisher. He's a loyal friend and always there for a person (and no I don't feel I'm ragging on him, he will go unnamed, and I'm only speaking "facts" about him), but to what degree? He's got skills, talent, and more... but his world began in the past playing D&D, then other games... and eventually he's this mid 30s Johnny Noone. I will say though, he's happier than most people I know. That said, I don't particularly (myself) think that tabletop RPGs are necessarily "Evil" but it can warp those who don't have the THACO (pun intended) to deal with the shit life throws at them. If they happen to be people trying to escape a shitty life condition etcetera, it gets even worse. I feel anything played with some restraint is okay, unless of course it's truly trying to (the game) mold a mind into being a killer or something weird like that. And while this example I gave isn't the rule but the exception, I can walk into any comic book shop and still see late 40something guys who've never done much at all in life.
Hey if they're happy, I'm truly happy for them. But the rest of society sees them and treats them like modern day Lepers in all honesty, and the only people that really like them are others like them. Most have migrated to the WoW servers and live virtual lives within that online phenomenon, something I still refuse to play. Very few people who move on with their own lives and start families etc, want to be around that as grown men/women, yet I still hang with this dude from time to time, but the times we do see get less and less frequent. Heck I'll even game with the guy from time to time... but then I realize
this IS his world and not mine, and it depresses me and I can't deal with it. So to some degree, yeah, it's often times just best to not even get involved with those kinds of games or the sub cultures that spawn from them.

I know; I just meant "bad person" by devil.
Edit- whoops, hit the submit button too early.
Yeah, I think for some people, RPGs are an escape from a crappy life, but for others, like me, they're just for fun.
I've been playing pen-and-paper RPGs since I was in middle school. My first one ever was some beginner's D&D game, from there I bought a Macross rulebook. These days I tend to stick with D&D 3.5, GURPS, and Feng Shui.
Anyone here read Knights of the Dinner Table? It's what got me into it to begin with.
does anybody play warhammer 40k i just got into it last month and im building an army i would like to know what you army you have ???
Chaos Marines!
I used to have the start of a Dark Eldar army...but really like playing Chaos... so I traded off a chunk of DA to get more models for the marines.
CHAOS MARINES FTW!!! i have a 1500pt chaos marine army too!
