Title: Guinness has to be crazy!!
Post by: japanfreak on April 01, 2009, 08:28:12 am
The Guinness Book of World Records 2009 has a top 10 gaming list. You know what games those are?

1: Space Invaders
2: Pacman
3: LoZ: OoT

WTH!? Space Invaders best game ever? Following pacman!?

Ive gotta say, I like them both but they dont stand a chance against SMB3 or LoZ:OoT! I think this is just crazy... What doyou think?

Gamers can't agree on a top 10 anything.  This is typically why you see so many of them on blogs -- people will leave comments telling you how wrong you are and then the article (and the blog) get more popular.

Why Guinness decided to print one is beyond me.

What games you like is highly subjective, that's why it's stupid to make something like an "official" list. Something like the "goodness" of a game can't be measured, that's why I don't understand how they could fit it into a records book.  :-\

Indeed. But its just idiot to say space invaders is the best:S

JapanFreak. Space Invaders was a BIG deal when it hit arcades. Many of those old classics that get put on top blah blah blah lists have staying power... this is why they get on the lists in general. And NO, you can't get gamers to agree on a top anything, ever. Part of it is a matter of what demographic you fall into, how old you are, and those generally play a part in how your opinions and tastes are formed.

I saw a top 20 (I think, it might have been a top ten) list by Guinness, and I didn't agree with a lot of it, since it ignored many games that existed before Nintendo hit the scene. It also ignored some of the really hot ones from the later generations as well (there were some EXCELLENT arcade games in mid-late 90s, as well as several great PSX games that didn't get a mention).

Definitely a highly subjective, and destined to be a hotly debated topic wherever it pops up!

But cmon everybody loves super mario bros. or donkey kong... Im 13 but its not that I like Wii or PS3 games the most... I prefer Metroid and SMB3 XD And yeah, im a big nintendo fan. I dont buy games from other companies much. I do this especially for the Wii. Third Party makes the Wii look bad:S

And Pac Man....
at one time....
Pac-Man was on EVERYTHING. There was a Pac-Man cereal, lunchbox.... shoot, some band made an album CALLED Pac-Man Fever. It was also a big deal.
And DK and Mario I think should be on just about any top 10 list.

Though, was this top ten most influential games, or top ten most popular?
If top ten most popular... then they should be basing info on historical sales data... or arcade earnings data. Most influential... well... then many of them will have to stretch back a ways, as many of the more influential games will have been early titles, when the hobby was still novel... or earlier genre defining titles... like Street Fighter II for brief example.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a bit of a Nintendo fan myself (though largely the NES/Fami/SNES/SFC), but I also have a high regard for things that are not Nintendo as well (started gaming at an early age with Atari 2600.... high respect for the PSX/PS2).

Plus, we are not able to see the whole list... there are three titles listed.

There cannot be a "best game" list.  Best-selling?  Sure.  Most merchandise?  No problem.  But not best game.

That's what I was trying to say with my above post. Anything you can attach numbers to is measurable. But best game? ... How in hell could they "measure" that?

I googled and got this list as 2009 for console games (http://blog.wired.com/games/2009/02/super-mario-kar.html):

1) Super Mario Kart
2) Tetris
3) Grand Theft Auto
4) Super Mario World
5) Zelda Ocarina of Time
6) Halo
7) Resident Evil IV
8) Final Fantasy XII
9) Street Fighter II
10) GoldenEye
11) Super Mario 64
12) Tomb Raider
13) Metal Gear Solid
14) Call of Duty 4
15) Sonic the Hedgehog 2
16) GTA San Andreas
17) Super Mario Bros
18) Zelda: A Link to the Past
19) Gran Turismo
20) Final Fantasy VII
21) Pro Evolution Soccer 4
22) The Orange Box
23) Lego Star Wars Complete Saga
24) Tekken 2
25) Wii Sports
26) Pokemon Red/Blue
27) Guitar Hero
28) Project Gotham Racing 4
29) Super Mario Galaxy
30) Resident Evil
31) Ico
32) Chrono Trigger
33) Gunstar Heroes
34) Soul Calibur
35) Advance Wars
36) Ridge Racer
37) Super Metroid
38) Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
39) GTA Vice City
40) BioShock
41) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
42) The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
43) God of War
44) Sega Rally Championship
45) Starfox 64
46) Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
47) WarioWare Inc
48) Saturn Bomberman
49) Crash Bandicoot
50) Outrun 2

Super Mario 64, God of War, Chrono Trigger, and Symphony of the Night are the standout games from that list for me, but it is certainly missing one heck of a lot of games that should be on that list and has way too many that shouldn't

Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday, said of the selection process: "We knew this would be a complex task so we invited a crack team of industry experts to form a judging panel - and the result is a "top 50" list of games ranked both on their importance and on how fun they are to play."

How do you measure BEST?

Do they have a record for BEST computer software programs? BEST recipe for soufflé? BEST all-terrain vehicle commercially sold?

Guinness fails in so many ways now.  They don't even have a world record for Fastest Consumption of a 24-Ounce Bottle of Breakfast Syrup.

It is only a matter of time before URDB (http://urdb.org/) phases out Guinness.

My favourites are still Super Mario Bros 3 and... Ah damn! I love so many games! What sucks the most is that movies get 2 pages and games 1! And there doesnt stand anything about the adventure/rpg/puzzle genre! What a bastards! I want to be director of Guinness, I would give games 200 pages and movies 1 page... about gojira, gamera and king kong XD

Space Invaders and Pacman are not good anymore. The reasons (Im not going to rate on graphics, thats not fair)- Music- Pacman= Blip blip blip blip blip. Music Space Invaders- Does the game have music? Donkey Kong- Well... you HAVE a beat there so...
Anyway, the only thing whats good is the gameplay but its boring as hell.
My top 10 should be only nintendo... and one capcom: Megaman 2. Anyway, excuse me, ive to beat Dr Wily!

Guiness have an official book of video game records, it goes into alot of actual numbers and has a ton of stats on sales, dates, all that stuff.  My sister bought it for work and I had a read through but there's not really much new there and I wouldn't reccommend it.  It struck me more as an introduction to the world of video games - for those who are unfamiliar and didn't grow up with them all, thus lost if someone were to ask them what was the most influential etc.

NES games/arcade games at the time used a lot of classical music that was "transposed" into 8-bit...I'm not sure exactly what song it is, but it's a familiar tune

TBH, that does seem why you're upset with them.

Not to mention berating Pac-man and Space Invaders on the music. Come on now, when you play a game, what do you expect to play? That's right, a fun entertaining captivating game. Games back then really weren't known for the music so saying you didnt like it based on music is rather silly. The game play can get repetitive, sure. But same could also be said for Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros, and a load of other games as well... Both of those games swallowed a bunch of quarters back in the day, making a lot of money doing so. That's why they are considered the best of all time, i'd assume.

You do seem to have a bias against games that aren't made by Nintendo. Which is rather...well unfair to anything you choose because you obviously would choose a Nintendo game over any other game.

Sorry if I sounded like a jerk but it needed to be said.

XD Yeah sorry, I'm just a big Nintendo fan and btw i got a sony playstation last time but its just i dont like these games. I just want the pure nintendo fantasy:-) But yeah, sorry for that music, but music is (I think) one of the most valueble things in a game. How do you feel to play mario galaxy without music? Or to play the legend of zelda without the opening music or the 'secret' sounds? That should be horrible. And you can say that Its my choice, but they maked a choice to, what a records book shouldnt do. Epic failure.

You can't just say that they suck because they didn't pick all of YOUR favorite games for their list.

I, for one, do not like RPGs. Other people like them. I don't tell them they suck for liking something I don't.

Wow, either calm down, and quit trolling...
or just quit trolling.

Most everyone on here agrees that disagreements will happen among this sort of community, and any hobbyist community as a whole. That means that we might all disagree that the Guiness list is bunk, but NONE of us are going to agree 100% about what should be on it.
What makes you think that your subjective list is any better than anyone else's highly subjective, and therefore, personal, title list?
