Title: Not-Classic Games?
Post by: Blue Protoman on April 13, 2009, 10:16:29 am
You know how some games always impersonate past generations by having 8/16-bit sounds and graphics or whatever?  And how they're not really classic games, but look like you could pass them off as one?  I'm talking about games that actually try to fake being classic, not those cheapass Mario fangames with SMB graphics, MIDI music and SMW sounds.

What games do you know of that are like this?  Oh, and they don't have to be commercial games.

These are the Not-Classic games I know of...

La-Mulana. Not a commercial release, but still absolutely amazing and huge in scale.

Joystick Johnny is great.  And, there's all those games which pretend to be handheld LCD games, like Shit Catcher or Asteroid Field (which I made).  Look for some fake LCD games at www.handheld.remakes.org.

There's this weird Sega game in WiiWare in Japan, called "Paul's Big Adventure".

Oh, yeah!  I've heard of that.  Except I believe it's Pole's Big Adventure.  I don't think it's coming to America, though.  :(

POLE'S BIG ADVENTURE DO WANT

There's also a Galaga-esque game called Shippy 1984.  It's for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Dreamcast.

Could perfectly be "Pole", too from the reading alone.

But to me tha mein character just looks like a good old "Paul". ;D

There's a homebrew PC game floating around out there called
"I Wanna Be The Guy." Looks like an SNES platformer. It's freeware, and I highly recommend downloading it.

once you beat "Me & My Katamari" (PSP) you unlock the credits where you can play through an 8-Bit side scrolling katamari game:

I'm tempted to buy that shirt :D
I'm surprised they haven't added any levels since he became president.  I figured they would've added some sort of White House level, or something.  But oh well...I like it!

AVOID - LIKE - THE - PLAGUE

I Wanna Be The Guy is purposely designed to be as frustrating and rage-inducing as possible. I mean like Atlantis no Nazo cross-bread with the hardest Mega Man game you've ever played. Times two! It's full of instant deaths, pixel-perfect jumping sections and general RRRAAAAGGGGEEEE.

Oh, I forgot, Sybon Action is a free, SMB-like game, I made a thread for it, it's been buried by now.  You're a white cat, and you have to go through stages..and they are full of traps and stuff.

I found IWTBTG fun... in a masochistic kind of way.

If you don't like games that are designed to be unbelievably difficult, then why do you like the NES / Famicom  at all?
