I'm curious what everything thinks is the most out-of-place Famicom character or item. I was playing Arkanoid a little while ago and got a little chuckle out of those cute whirling dervishes. Anyone else want to nominate a character or item?

This guy. :D

He doesn't seem too out of place to me. More like perplexing because he's so fat and still can fly. :)
Cigarettes in Metal Gear. No use for them, either.
Remember guys! This isn't the most useless character/item. It's the most out-of-place character/item. Those may be useless, but I think they fit in with the overall goals and settings of those games.

Cigarettes in Metal Gear fits both useless and out of place.
Hell no they don't. That's a rough and tough, I'm-a-real-man type of game. Cigarettes fit perfectly within the image the game is trying to project.

Then how come it told you NOT to smoke them?
Because it's a game for kids, duh! :P
I think it's time to brush the dust off of this extremely old thread. I have nothing to contribute to it, but I'm sure someone does. ;)
I do. You use your smokes to uncover lasers in MGS. You don't need too, but I guess that's their only purpose.
Their function is what makes them not out-of-place, not the fact that they don't do anything else. I get it. :P
I'm surprised this thread didn't get more serious responses. Perhaps I'll think of something and come back to this. I know there have been times I've seen out of place things in games (and I'm assuming this thread is mostly referring to 8 or 16 bit games).
Well, it is in the Famicom/Disk System section. ;)
The cigarettes in Metal Gear do have a use.
SPOILERS!
After you blow up the metal gear, the base starts its self-destruct system. You now have a limited amount of time to kill Big Boss and escape the base. If you use the cigarettes at this point, it'll reset the countdown clock.
END SPOILERS!
Really! I thought that they were some kind on inside-joke item.
The lonely red Snifit in World 3-3 in Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario USA/2. He is the only red one in the entire game.

:o
In Werewolf, (or warwolf) there are ninjas as enemies!! What does that have to do with a werewolf game? Great game, out of place character.
Kind of Famicom related (His game was ported to it after all), the hero of Yie Ar Kung-Fu appears here in Sexy Parodius:

There are quite of few items and characters out of place in the parodies. I think of bowls of noodles in Gradius.
Those cute purple things on the 3nd row...

Yarr. Save the picture, then post it. :P
It isn't for famicom, but the Cheeto health restorer in Chester Cheetah on genesis that's placed right in front of where you start. You start with full health!
Oh yea that reminds me in tmnt, there is a pizza placed behind a spike wall, theres no way to get it.

Which one? I don't recall this.
I'm guessing this one:

Not entirely useless or out of place if it was specifically put there as a trap. Not so different from another game obstacle IMO.

Ha, when I saw this I thought it was just a hand giving me the finger

It's subliminal! ;)
Even though it isn't a character or single item necessarily, I'd have to say the obstacle course in Paperboy is rather out of place.
My friend told me that in Kaiketsu Yanchamaru/Kid Niki, there is a rock that resembles a middle finger!! When i go back home ill have to replay this to check it out
In Kid Niki 3, there is a stone guy that shoots you with his weiner!
i know! I played through Mario 14 last week, and theres a little kid statue who pisses on you!! More information: http://www.i-mockery.com/minimocks/sexual-games/15.php
