Hello again. I've had this idea for a while... A shiny paint job on an old NES system, the famicom world logo carefully stenciled on the cartridge door, a orange LED, maybe a disk-kun sticker as well, and the main attraction... a built in famicom slot.
Here's a really trashy google sketchup of what I think it should sorta look like:

The Famicom World text will be a lot smaller and actually in proportion...
I originally had plans to put my famiclone pirate system inside the nes, but that would requite a lot of extra wiring, it's own power supply connector and output, I'd have to install a switch and all that, but I suppose if I take a 60 to 72 pin converter and solder it to the NES's pin connector, I'd be able to play famicom or NES without a switch (Seeing that there is only ONE cartridge connected to the system at one time)
Unfortunately, I'm no expert at this. (I.E. I've never modded anything before) I know how to go about painting the plastic, but I have no idea what kind of paint I should use. Would regular old spray paint do the trick and leave a even surface such as this:

Also, what do you call that stuff you spray on after that gives it that shine?

For the famicom cart slot, I can probably hot glue it in and support it with a carved wooden block- perhaps balsa for it's non existent weight.
What do you folks think about this crazy idea? Too much?
It's a very nice concept for anyone that's drawing it and would probably look great when the final product is done. Obviously the hard part would be to make the famicom cart slot functional. It should also have a door, kinda like the NES 2 or the Famicom.
Other than trying to figure out how to make that cart slot functional, it should be a very doable project if you can find a disk-kun sticker unless you want to just paint it on.
well for the slot its pretty simple to solder a pin adaptor, but add a switch to prevent the use of one or other is another story....
the logos and images, you can print in a gloss paper and glue over
For the paint the most important is the final coat, you have to aply a clear coat, adesive to plastic, resistent to heat
The switch thing should be relatively easy (correct me if I'm wrong), I think you can toggle between the carts by switching the PRG /CE and CHR /CE lines (and probably CIRAM /CE, the "official" method used by Famiclones with built-in games) with a DPST switch. Of course you also need to disable the CIC if you want to play Famicom carts using the hardwired 60 pin slot.
133 didn't say it was hard, he just noted it had to be done. ::)
The Generation NEX uses the CIRAM /CE line trick to detect Famicom carts on its top slot. It has the side effect of preventing games like Castlevania 3 and Gauntlet from working on it. I think you can get away with the trick I described above.

@133MHz, switching CIC is not hard.
I didn't say it was hard, just don't forget about it :P.
Looks nice, you should make the power buttons yellow though not grey. Would you do the same for the controllers or use famicom ones or what?
I'll just use the standard NES controllers, painting them with the color scheme of course.
Also, this sure is going to take a while to do... I need a job so I can fund this crap :P
How far did you get with this? I have a spare NES, I might paint it like this, if that's cool with you.
I have not even started. ;D First, I need to learn how to paint and add gloss, but that shouldn't be too hard. The real issue is cart switching. 133MHz's idea sounds like the winner, so I'd try that first. Also, please go right ahead.
