Title: Cleaning your computer screen
Post by: nintendodork on September 07, 2009, 07:02:28 pm
I know this is a dumb question, but what's the best thing to clean a laptop screen with?  I've heard that rubbing alcohol isn't good on it.  So what do you recommend?

I usually use ammonia diluted with water, which is pretty much the same thing as Windex. I spray it on a cloth or paper towel first, then wipe the screen clean.

Most commercial LCD cleaner liquid solutions are no more than a mix of 50% isopropyl alcohol and 50% distilled water. You can mix them at home and save a bunch if you're a cheap bastard like me ::).

Thing is, products like Windex and even the 50% isopropyl formula can ruin the anti-glare coating of some LCDs.
Just to be on the safe side I use a lint-free cloth slightly soaked in distilled water (tap water contains mineral deposits which then leave ugly streaks), and I don't let the water dry up on its own; continue rubbing with a dry cloth until it looks perfectly clear.
