Ok so I'm not sure if this should technically go in other gaming, but it's relevant to the famicom thread I hope.
New 3D game out on PS3 in Japan nest year that is a parody of th old famicom games and looks totally amazing. I doubt we'lls ee an English version anytime soon:

Please move this if you'd prefer it in other gaming section. I guess I wanted everyone to see it!
What does everyone think? I think it looks amazing, will definitely pick it up if XSEED decide to localise it!
That looks great.
4 or 5 times in the video I thought "Zelda"... :D
If it's good I'll definitely get that.
Jesus, those graphics looks real, like a stop motion video of legos or something. I wonder if it would be worth modding my PS3 over, because I'd like to import and play this bad boy.
You don't have to mod anything.
PS3 games are region free. :D Just import and play! Great!
That's pretty awesome.
I hope this comes stateside. I need more excuses to buy a PS3 (Blu-Ray player and The Last Guardian aren't quite enough to justify the purchase...).
How about the lower price? The PS3 slim looks pretty sharp, too.
I also think this should be in the Other Gaming board.

Me too ;) Unfortunately, I can't read Kanji, Hiragana or Katakana.
Heck, I can't even tell the difference! I'm sure there'll be details soon enough though.
They even have a throw-back to Spelunker, it seems! If this gets a U.S. release, I'll have another reason to get a PS3...
Looks like I'll finally have a reason to take advantage of region free.
Looks cool. The only system to have a single good game has no region lock-out. Does the Blue-ray player have region blocking?

It's not
that low (but it does help...).

It's just my unimportant opinion, but in my eyes the slim PS3 looks awful.
I love my big old glossy white PS3. 8)

I too like the original PS3, but mine is black.
I don't think so, no - I'm sure we played a US dark knight on the retail one at work but don't quote me on it.
Blu-Ray playback is indeed region locked. (Europe = B, NA+Japan = A)
You can only watch discs from other territories when the code is the same or it it is code free.
I know SONY give the option to region lock movies on Blu-ray but I thought many were not. Region locking is something I personally really hate.
Yes, it's a shame still so many companies region lock their movies.
There are some German movies I'd want on Blu-Ray, but they're region B, and I can't play them on my Japanese PS3. Sucks. >:(
Wow. This looks good. if this gets released in English, I'll have to pick up a PS3.

We've all seen / heard about those movies Manuel and you shouldn't be watching them anyway :D
Haha, not all German movies are bad.
... Really!
Wow, I just watched that video...They really captured the feeling of 8-bit there!
I want to kill the people who made regional-locking. :-\
[UPDATE]
Hyrule no Densetsu on PS3!

Now tell me this doesn't get everyone single one of you on this board hyped!
:o Wow, I need this game!
This looks really awesome!
I sincerely hope that this won't become a reason for a lawsuit, because it is suspiciously similar to Zelda.
Nintendo gave up their rights to make good games when they stopped for 15 years. -JigenD
Powerful quote :o
I don't get it...
Nintendo make good games every year since the beginning of the 80s.
The problem is, Nintendo make games for a target (albeit wide) age group. If we all grow up and want mature games that's our problem - Nintendo's games are still there and still being made by and for the same peopl.
I like the same games now (age 30) as I did 15 years before (basically)
I personally am not very interested in those "mature" games, because mature in this context just means violent in 99% of the cases.
If Nintendo keeps making games of the Super Mario Galaxy / NSMB / Twilight Princess / Phantom Hourglass caliber, I'll still play them with 60, too.
I might just get a PS3 for this game but only if it's released in the US.
I don't see a reason why it shouldn't be released in the US.

My real gripe is that Nintendo doesn't seem to "move on" , like their characters getting older or doing completely different things. I'm particularly displeased with Punch Out!! :-\
Then you have to speak with your wallet and stop buying their stuff.

Money.
You have any idea how much it costs to translate and test a game with that much text? Even more so if you do the 5 languages for Europe as well?!
This is a sure sell in Japan but in Europe and the states it becomes an instant niche title. I'd expect an English translation for the US, but i don't think it'll be out in Europe.
I am a translator, so yes, I know how much it costs. :D
But if marketed right, this should be no problem, especially when the game is good. If it's crappy, that's another thing again.
Then again, I personally don't need a translated version, because I can understand the original. ;D
Oh I know you're a translator, but it's not just the cost of actually translating, it's the cost of development too. You can outsource a translation pretty cheap, you can even record voice-over pretty cheap but you still need to compile it all and put it into the game.
Once that's done you gotta pay guys (and gals) to test it, you gotta get it through Sony America and their testing, then Europe too if you want. All that takes weeks and months in most cases, by which time all your marketing focus is gone so you have to respend and even then it's hard because people don't always want to cover it. So, it's not always about marketing right as much as timing it right, even. I imagine the amount they have to spend on marketing just in Japan is pretty small as well.
I still think it'll show its face in the US though, it's easier and cheaper to roll out there amongst other things.
Yeah, it's quite an expense (and time consuming) to localize games.
We have awesome and dedicated people like you to thank for it though Manuel! :D
When you think of it though, the sales of retro game challenge didn't even cover that process, so it's more of a risk than people think, even when it's pretty much a sure thing it can be too much money to risk losing.
* fingers crossed for this over here :(
It seems that Retro Game Challenge didn't sell enough indeed, because part 2 still didn't get released.
It's really a shame.
Yeah, XSEED came right out and said that because the first didn't get bought enough then they literally couldn't get the 2nd one moving, they wanted to do it even.
Thing is though, this is what I eman by a sure thing in Japan often is the other end of the scale in the erst of the world.
Japan - TV show with star + love for famicom/retro titles (esp RPGs and dragon quest) much more than anywhere else = success.
US / Europe - no tv show, no celeb personality, mediocre love for retro titles, (little love for dragon warrior) = stores not convinced so it aint on shelf so it stood little chance in the first place.
It may have got loadsa love on 1up.com and fan sites but that is no way near a good indication of the DS audience. I know one game in particular for DS that got game of the year all over the place but sold so, so little because it was new and stores weren't that aware of it.
It's shame but that's the way it goes. OK for Japanese linguists like you Manuel but I can't see a fan translation coming out for retro game challenge 2 anytime soon. Apparently it was a real biatch to fit all the translations in the character limit as well..

Really? As far as technical limitations go, newer games tend to be a lot easier translate than older games.
yeah, it's basically because DS still works on a pixel level, especially for text and for a game like that. Having character limits is just another way to keep the data size down but I'd be surprised if they had to work that hard on a game like that.
Sometimes they are just put in place because of lack of consideration, then when you come to localise it's a real pain when it ends up 20% more text.
Rather than have me go on, there are a series of blogs I should point you to that look at it all and are quite an interesting read:
http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8977388&publicUserId=6017191
To go back to the original title, I hope there will be a trial version on the PSN. That would be sweet.
I think this game looks really neat; however, seeing it in motion kind of hurts my eyes. :-X
I'm going to keep watching it though. Some of the gameplay looked a little bland but it's still in development so I don't worry too much.
Development should over by now. The scheduled release date in Japan is November 5.
That's a shame. The gameplay video I saw looked really crappy. :-\
**EDIT**
The video I'm talking about was posted here. (http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=3920.msg62692#msg62692)
I don't know... that certainly doesn't hype me up for the game. Like, it looks nifty to a certain point but the gameplay doesn't appear to be all that incredible. It seems as if it's only a couple steps above the first Zelda game and that isn't a compliment.
I'm still sad about this being a Japan only exclusive. Well, on an interesting note of localizing games: Animal Crossing Was a bitch to translate into English but Nintendo of Japan like it so much that they re-translated it back into Japanese and made an e+ version with even more features including holidays and e-reader support. That's taking localization to the extreme. :D
I think I've read somewhere that Atlus might publish it in the US.
Well, I'm for one still hyped about this. Something I saw today just fuels that even more!

If Nintendo doesn't already have their hand in this, I have no idea how there couldn't be an issue. From the trailer and other online clips, I see it is loaded with "identical" 3D translations of numerous elements from Zelda 1 and 3.
gameplay elements? You can mostly get away with copying gameplay elements. Look at how uncharted has totally ripped off Tomb Raider (and done it better). Same with football or sports games.
It's characters and text that holds real IP value. It's hard to actually trademark or copyright a gameplay mechanic, unless it's based around an actual product, like air hockey for example.

No, I meant characters and exact replications of certain map sections (the enemy that has a bunch of little things flying around him in a circle, the room with the line of water in the exact same location with the same dungeon layout, same interface, etc.
There have been legal issues for lesser things, especially in music where artists have lost all profits for "accidentally" having a similar passage as another artist's song.
With the fame of Zelda, it is all rather blatant here.
..It is, I agree. Everyone has noticed but yet still no complaint from Nintendo it seems. Odd when you consider it's on a rival platform too.
Let's see what happens!!
I think if Nintendo haven't done something by now, they also won't in the future.
It's probably ok to regard this one as "safe" now. :D

Well, if they don't have their hand in it already, who knows what may happen if it generates a lot of sales (based solely on the fact it looks just like a 3D version of Zelda 1 and 3). Money may change everything.
The Japanese are not as "hardcore" with "similar contents", or however we can call that. It's a sort of flattery here. There are a lot of manga that blatantly rip off others and many stores often use famous manga/anime/game characters for advertising purposes without special consent by the respective owners.
You're right that money is a big factor, but in the end I personally think it this game won't sell enough copies to produce any problems.
[UPDATE] Even more reasons to love this game!
http://kotaku.com/5385422/3d-dot-heroes-has-the-bestest-load-screens/gallery/
Though I would have liked to guess them for myself..

On a side note - I'm kinda surprised a game like this even has to load. I know Blu-ray discs take longer to read than DVD and that causes a delay and some necessary loading but still, this isn't too taxing on system resources. Now look at Uncharted 2 which runs flawlessly at 1080p and has no loading screens at all, none!
Either bad programming or they just want to show off loading screens.

Awesome!
Sweet; I can hardly wait.
And everybody's happy! ;D
Yes great news, this is definitely coming to the states now! Let's just hope it's not a massive delay. The game may be finished but alas English localisation could be halfway through or less..
My first double post ever, but with interesting news, so it's allowed:
Seems this little gem could potentially make it's way to your 360 dashboard, potentially:
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3176826
:o My ears!
I second that.
What's with the fast-forwarded sound?
They sped up the video. Rather than replacing the audio, they just left the sped-up sounds in it.
I figured that... and basically the sound should really be replaced with something not going on your nerves. :)
So, another update - this game is DEFINITELY coming to the states now, published by Atlus.
So, because PS3 games are region free I'll definitely be importing this. Great news and it couldn't have come soon enough for me :)

I'd like to let you guys know that there will be another game out soon in the same vein, for the PSP:
Classic Dungeon
http://nippon1.jp/consumer/classicdungeon/ (http://nippon1.jp/consumer/classicdungeon/)
Oh, and the English localisation is done too, I think there may be a date for this now.
Thank goodness the English localization is done.
