Title: Virtual Boy
Post by: nensondubois on September 24, 2009, 09:48:36 am
Well I have purchased one for around 80 bucks with a free copy of Mario Tennis. I know that this is Nintendo's rarest video game console because it only produced 800,00 units and was a colossal failure on behalf of it giving people migraines and in some cases; seizures.

I plan on getting all 22 games for this the VB.

Is it really a horrible gaming console? I don't think so

Dude you gotta get Virtual Wario Land! Thats the best game for it. Does it play japanese vb games?

The system's biggest flaw is that it's not practical.  You have to be sitting a certain way and have your head adjusted to the right position in order to use it.  It's inconvenient.

A lot of the games are fun, though.  I don't think it deserves all the hate it gets.

True dat, most the games had no reason to be on the VB. They could have just been on the Gb, or snes. Jack bros is fun too.

I quite like my Virtual Boy. It's a fun system that has a lot of weird quirks that set it apart from most other gaming decks. Put Wario Land and Red Alarm on your priority list, they're probably the two best games out for it. Jack Bros. is fun but don't kill yourself trying to find it and don't overpay for it.

If you have any issues with your Virtual Boy down the road, and you will (expect the LED displays to go wonky on you), go to Planet Virtual Boy (http://www.vr32.de/modules/news/). They're basically the Famicom World of the Virtual Boy scene. Great forum filled with really nice and really smart people.

When I went to play it today after it arrived, the right screen is all black and I've read that this happenes because the LEDs are glued onto the motherboard so I'm going to exchange it... and they said it was in good condition! :'(

I do want to get every game and luckily the game store that's about ten minutes away sells VB games but Japan only games.

I can't wait to get Mario clash and Wario Land! Red Alarm will have to wait as I'm a huge Mario fan.

This guy supposedly fixes VB your console but I don't know how good he is...

My guess is that he uses a heat gun to reflow the solder connections to the eyepiece LEDs and probably some sort of clamp to hold them down afterwards.

that was the only thing I could think of since he doesn't use the insane oven method nor the time consuming soldering method.

To build on what uglyjoe was saying, it really isn't practical when you think about how it was marketed. It was marketed as a portable system, even though you can barely find a comfortable way to play it at home.

That's why I intend to stay away from owning it.

What would be awesome is if it hooked into other consoles and served as a secondary display.   You know, like the way the GBA hooked up to the gameboy?  It'd be cool because when you look into the Virtual Boy, you wouldn't be able to see what on the TV at all.  It could be a really good gimmick if used correctly.

Nensondubois, consider this an opportunity to get to know your console and learn more about it. Try to fix it yourself, you'll be better for it.

The oven method isn't all-that difficult and really works quite well. A heat gun will also suffice (I know it can be hard to put a precious game into the oven). Either way, there's no reason to pay someone to do what you can do yourself. It's very hard to mess up and break these things as long as you use common sense.

Plus between this forum and the Virtual Boy forum I linked you to, there are dozens of people that know exactly what you need to do and who are willing to help. :)

I don't have the time to fix it myself... and why do you care so much?

If that's the case, I'm sorry. I would never put plastic of any sort of into a place where I put m food. :-[

If that's the case, you can use a heat gun, also known as electric paint remover.

I think it's obvious that I was secretly trying to steal your identity. And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!

Either way though, enjoy the Virtual Boy. :)

Like I said, I simply don't have the time to do otherwise I would... so I'm having someone else do it for $20 and to help promote his online business at the same token.

I'm excited to see the results. That'll be great to have a first-hand account of the quality of service. :D

Mine came back with the right screen working in perfect order. He also removed some sand material that was making a rattling noise in the main unit. I would definitely recommend you send him your console for repair.

Awesome!  I need to get mine fixed soon.  This guy looks pretty good.  How much was it to get fixed, and how long were the shipping times?

$30 but since I was the first customer and all, he only charged me $20. Allow two to three weeks for the repairs and for the shipping back and fourth depending on where you live. And don't forget the tracking label. :P

You were his very first customer? :o  That's pretty cool!  Thanks for the information, though.

I only paid $40 for mine a few years ago. Had 3 games with it too. Wario Land is the sole game actually entertaining on it though IMO. Everything else just didn't feel like it tried to be more than a filler for the library to keep the system from looking abandoned. Honestly who the hell wants to  play Golf...

Wario is my fav VB game! I wish it was on the game boy or SNES though.

I'm looking for Mario Clash. but I know where to get it cheap. The game store only sells with the games with a system. >:(

edit: I just purchased Wario Land. I hope it doesn't suck as bad as it originally sold.

If you like all the other Wario games you certainly will not hate it.

I'm getting Red Alarm for under 10. Oddly enough, people have described it as "vertically challenged" and "disorienting".

I just canceled my Red Alarm order but I will get it sometime in the future. I did this in favor of another game.

No, something happened with my account so I had to cancel it. I want it as well as all of the 22 games.
