Title: Dreamgear thing
Post by: cubelmariomadness on October 13, 2009, 02:01:22 pm

I'm thinking about getting one for my friend for Christmas, but I don't know the games on it. Has anyone actually owned one of these before, because my friend really wants my NES  :P Do you know if the selection of games is crappy? Anything that has Mario and some bubble bobble on it is fine by him, but do you think this is a good present as a cheap NES replacement?

Wow, I wish I had friends that would gift me pirate stuff.

When I show my friends my famicom collection, they give me a funny look an talk about the latest xbox game.  :'(

How did you navigate that site and find something that isn't weather related?  I'm trying to see if they have anymore stuff like that, but all I see are categories for weather products.

Hey now, you've someone who shares common interests living among you in Seattle.  Pink Godzilla is a pretty well-known place.  I'm sure there are other people who own a Famicom there. :D

Unlike us Iowan folk. >_>

Your absolutely right. How does a weather website even sell something so miscellaneous to weather forecasting equipment? '

I hear Pink Godzilla is ridiculously overpriced.

I've got one of those DreamGear Plug 'n Play TV Game with 32 built-in games... and they're all utter garbage. Except for a hack of Track & Field, they're poorly programmed original games with bland graphics, repetitive music and gameplay that makes the Atari 2600 look like an Xbox 360.

I did a "review" of it last year, complete with screenshots and video:

As my personal opinion, if your friend likes (or is starting to like) the Famicom/NES, don't get him a DreamGear console. The games are so bad that it'll turn him away. Even a crappy Famicom clone like a Polystation with decent pirated games like SMB and a regular Famicom cart slot to plug in original games is a much better option.

:o Oh. Man, i thought it'd be like the power joy. What would be a better alternative?

A Power Joy.  It has a slot right on it for Famicom games.

Absolutely. Some Power Joys come with a great selection of built-in pirated games, mostly 1st gen Famicom games and classics such as SMB, Contra, etc. and with a standard 60 pin Famicom cart slot you can play any original Famicom or NES game on it. Also they tend to come with a second controller and even a light gun.

If you're lucky you'll get over 60 unique and fun games on its memory. The only downside is that the build quality is shoddy, but hey, it's the fun that counts :P.

Yep, my other friend has a power joy 3. We stayed up all night to beat contra. No such luck. I'll probably follow your advice. I see one for 10$. Thanks for keeping me away from dreamgear.  ;)

I have a Power Joy 3. Absolutely the best pirate you can get. There are problems, however. To get my cartridges to fit in the slot, I had to file down these weird nubs, and now the carts are too loose. If your hand bumps the cartridge just slightly, the game will crash. I could probably fix this by making guides out of styrofoam, but it just isn't worth it. You'd be better off buying a real famicom for cartridge playing. The built in games are good enough.

I have one more question. Is the dream gear's games on a glop-top or actually just a hidden cart slot inside?
If so, could I just drill a hole in it? The hidden slot's happened before.

Mine contains a board the size of a matchbox, with only one glop-top. That means no hidden cart slot inside :-\.
