Title: Nintendo 64
Post by: nintendodork on October 15, 2009, 01:53:59 pm
Ok, so I just got Donkey Kong 64 in the mail today, and it came with an expansion pak.  I couldn't wait to put it in and start playing, but I have one problem...

I don't have the Jumper Pak Ejector Tool. >_>  How could I go about doing this without it safely?  I doubt a knife would be safe on something like this...any help?

A gun.

>_>

I think I was able to get one out with my fingers once.

I'm (very cautiously) trying to use a butter knife to get it out.  I've heard there's a button that the ejector pushes, which unhooks the Jumper Pak from the console..is that true, or is it just a tight fit?

I have no idea how he was able to remove that with his hand.  I'm obviously not seeing something.  The people doing it in the videos I see have absolutely no problem with it.  Do I have to get something right behind the jumper pak?  Or is there like.. a button at the bottom of where it's sitting?

Well, I guess it wasn't as complicated as I thought.  I found a little groove on the back that I put a flathead into, and just yanked it out.  I made a little scratch on the back of the Jumper Pak    (:()  Oh well.  It's in now.  Time to play some DK64!

Dude, pause the video a full second through.  That's not his finger he's using.

I too have a quick question about N64.

Why are ther shields inside the cart? NES and SNES didn't have them. What purpose do they have for a cart?

Title: Re: Quick question about the Nintendo 64

I wish but I don't own a digital camera... or a dsi.

The only way I know of describing it (even though it's probably wrong) is that it looks like an rf shield that you would find in an NES but smaller so it fits around the board in the cart.

It comes in two sizes, small, and big. The small one takes up half the cart because the board is that small in games such as Tony Hawks Pro Skater. The big ones would cover boards for games like Paper Mario/Mario Story and take up the majority of the cart.

You've got it spot on - it's an RF shield. N64 cartridges work at higher frequencies than their NES or SNES counterparts because of the faster memory access times, in consequence they produce a lot more interference and thus need shielding just like the console in order to pass FCC regulations and avoid annoying other electronic devices.

Some SNES carts come with RF shielding too, particularly those with the SuperFX chip, because of the high operating frequency of that processor (21 MHz).

Interesting.

I think I have never seen an opened N64 cart.

Is the rf shielding necessary? Can I take it out of the cart and out of any console that I have that doesn't use rf (my NES and SNES for example)?

I guess, but if someone walks by with a radio or some heart helper thing, it'll interfere with it. If you're using rf.
Title: Re: Quick question about the Nintendo 64

Will they intefere with it if I am not using rf? Also, will hearing aids interfere wih it?

If you're not using rf, it doesn't matter. If you are it'll interfere.

This is wrong.

Using the RF output or not won't make any difference. The interference comes from every part of the system. The information sent and received by the CPU and other chips make for good carrier waves at high frequencies, and the circuit board traces interconnecting everything together make for excellent antennas. Basically the system turns into a chaotic radio transmitter spewing all sorts of crap into the air, and you can think of the RF output as a miniature broadcast TV station. That's why the RF shielding covers the entire console, and the RF modulator box comes with its own separate shielding.

Yes, you can take the metal shielding off your consoles and it won't be the end of the world. In fact I've done that to my NES because of all the mods I've done to it and it works just fine, doesn't seem to pollute the airwaves too much, but YMMV. You might get anything from squiggly lines on certain TV channels, buzzing on computer speakers / wireless audio transmitters / hearing aids, to an accelerated heart rate in Grandpa ::). The only way to know for sure is trying it out.

Instead of making another thread, this might as well serve as the main Nintendo 64 thread.

So...how about that Perfect Dark?  I played it for the first time ever yesterday, and it's a great FPS.

Thanks for the answer 133MHz. Now I have something to do tomorrow. By the way, what is th YMMV you refer to?

Also, those interferences with the buzzing would only occur when the system/cart without the rf shield is in use, correct?

Perfect Dark is one of my favorite games of all time! When it came out I played the hell out of that game, I'd actually rate it above Goldeneye. I was about to go wait on line for days when the 360 came out to get Perfect Dark Zero...until I read reviews of it.

YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary.

Just because my NES seems to be fine without its metal shielding doesn't mean that yours should be too. That's it :).

Correct.

Post by: nintendodork on October 20, 2009, 06:42:28 pm
Yeah.  It's such a shame that PD Zero sucked so much.  I too would rate it above GoldenEye.  The controls are great, which actually really surprised me, since I thought the last thing the N64 controller would be good for is a good setup for a FPS.

Anyway, now I have a new question. :P  I was recently playing Perfect Dark, and every time I take the cartridge out of the box, I can't help but stare at that ugly price sticker.  They should really do something different when putting stickers on cardboard/paper boxes that can rip/tear easily.

My question is this; is there any way to get the price tag off without majorly damaging the box?  I thought of maybe trying rubbing alcohol, but I figured that would just make the colors on the box fade.  Any suggestions?

Patience. Lots of it. Pry the sticker off with your fingernail and rip it until every piece of it comes out. Then rub the glue residue with your finger and eventually it'll come out too. Yes this is absolutely tedious but it's the only way to do it without causing damage to the box.

I agree with 133MHz, I had to do the same thing for other boxes I had and it worked nd walked away with no damage.

One last time for confirmation: Taking into account the possible interferences, I can take out the rf shield in the console or cart that do not use rf, right?

I tend to keep those around in case I need a piece of scrap metal for cutting, setting stuff on fire, things like that.
I've grilled a couple of hot dogs on the top shielding from a NES once, because I didn't have anything else at my disposal. ::)

So, I want Sin & Punishment and the first Pokemon Stadium. :P  I don't have the tools to open up my N64, and take out the protector thing.  (or the dust cover. :'() So, since this works with the Genesis, I figured I could do it with the N64 too.  Couldn't I just put the Japanese game in a GameShark, and start up the game without any codes?

I've never heard of that trick actually. I've heard of a way to do the import mod on the N64 without taking it apart.

You chissel the tabs out with a flathead screwdriver...  ;D

What tabs? ???
Title: Re: Nintendo 64
Post by: Pikkon on October 27, 2009, 06:31:32 pm
Its easy to open your N64 up.

Grab a bic pen, take out the ink part and just have the plastic tube, like the end on fire and blow it out and stick it on the screw, let it sit for a few seconds and start twisting, the screw should come out.
Thats how I opened up my N64,Gamecube and Snes.
Also another thing I did, once I got the screws out I replaced them with some phillips screws for easy opening.

Okay, maybe tabs was a poor word choice.

I can't see that clear in your picture but when you open the dust cover for an american N64, you look for a square piece on both side which ressemble how the cart fits with the corners on the back cut out....

If you understood that, you know which square pieces to chissel out. Be careful because damage could be possible.... or just get a 4.5 mm gamebit

YES! The thing that is circled is your target and yes, more challenging than the SNES mod, but doable.

Again, either chissel them out with a flathead (not reccomended, can potentially ruin your system)
