I was recently taking a stroll through the streets of Akihabara. It was then that I told my friend something along the lines of "Dude, I want to buy and some games but I don't want to dish out the cash". A few seconds later I spot 3,000 YEN blowing across the ground in front of me. I took this as a sign from the heavens and bought an AV Famicom along with some games. A few weeks later and my collection is growing strong and I'm having a blast along the way, especially since this is my first self-owned Famicom/NES system since I passed it up for the Super Famicom/SNES back in the day.
What I've got so far:
Gun-Dec
Abadox
Salamander
Lickle
Ninja Ryukenden
Hoshino no Kirby
Mario 3
Air Fortress
Crisis Force
Getsufuu Maden
Mighty Final Fight
I'm collecting loose carts this time around. I used to collect Neo-Geo AES carts, and kind of picked up a collector OCD from that scene since the games often cost hundreds of dollars each. I found that having those "mint" condition carts was more of a stressful endeavor than a fun one though. I could only imagine that this is accelerated times ten with Famicom carts since they came in flimsy cardboard boxes. Back in the day most people threw the packaging away or tossed it around because of this. If a box isn't in good condition it's more of an eyesore than a bonus anyway. I'm totally enjoying walking into a game store, finding every game I want instantly and for a good price, and playing them without worrying about getting them scratched or crunching up the box when I pull it out. I find myself playing my games a lot more if they are not a pristine and complete museum piece. Stress free gaming. My Megadrive games are all CIB though because their plastic clam shell cases rock. It's actually harder to find a loose Megadrive game than a CIB one. Too bad Famicom games were not packaged the same way. Props to all you CIB Famicom collectors though. You are a lot more patient than me.
With that being said I still care about aesthetics. Especially since most Famicom carts don't have title labels on the top like NES carts do(Nintendo of Japan's stupidest decision ever). I saw a picture of satoshi_matrix's collection with the custom inserts and universal media cases and was blown away. I can't provide insert scans but I would love to help in making custom inserts for The Cover Project.
あ そうですか! :o Good finds.
I've been interested in an AV Famicom for quite some time. I don't have a Famicom yet. :-\ Neo Geo AES is pretty expensive, right? I have the same OCD with FC games.

AES is ungodly expensive. My small collection was composed of five relatively cheap titles and that was still over a thousand dollars sitting on my shelf. That's when I decided it's time to quit until I win the lottery.
Is Gun-Dec supposed to be Gun-Nac? The shmup with the evil mutant bunnies?

Two totally different games.

GASP! You need one! you're a moderator on a famicom forum with no famicom! :D
both pretty awesome though ;D
LUCKY!
I love finding money on the ground! I'm OCD w/ my Famicom because it is fairly white. I never take it out where the sun can beat down on it.
Yeah, I'm with you totally on the stress-free aspect of famicom gaming.
I actually like the fact that Famicom game boxes were cardboard and are therefore rare (unlike Megadrive, PS, etc). It means that my Famicom collection takes up way less space cuz I've only got the carts.
I also agree that hte lack of labels on the tops of hte carts sucks. Other than that flaw though I think the Famicom carts are the most aesthetically pleasing of any console. Compared to the ugly, bulky grey NES carts the Famicom ones win hands down.
3,000 yen for an AV famicom and some games is an awesome deal, BTW. Just the AV Famicom goes for about 6,000 yen at my local shop! Nice find! :)

I didn't get all of that stuff for 3,000 YEN. The 3,000 YEN I found on the ground only went towards the stuff. The CIB AV Famicom cost me around 5,000 YEN not including AV cables and the AC adapter which together cost me another 2,000 YEN. The point I was trying to make is that 3,000 YEN came down from the heavens and pushed me to buy a Famicom which I would not have bought otherwise since I was a bit on the fence about it. Can't deny destiny.
Finding 3000Yen alone is great in the first place. ;D
The most I have found was a 500Yen coin in a vending machine.
AV Famicoms are quite expensive.
I was really lucky to find mine with AC adapter and AV cables for 3980 Yen. :D

Still a good story though! The 3,000 yen was definitely destiny!
The thing you said about being able to walk into a store and instantly find every Famicom game you could possibly want for a cheap price and be able to play it right away struck a chord with me.
I've got about half a dozen stores within cycling range of my place that have huge selections of cheap Famicom games and that was probably what got me into Famicom collecting in the first place. I think I have more fun looking through the shelves at the stores for bargains than I do actually playing the games!

I agree sometimes. The labels are kind of colorful..
