I'm trying to do a movie poster, & I'm going to need to either find/render an image of the Metal Gear from Metal Gear for the NES/MSX or Snake's Revenge.
Can anyone help me out? :(
I tried all over Google. I could also use a model toy or 3DS max model if one exists.
Otherwise I'll need to somehow render one out of scratch. If anyone knows how I could do that, I'd really appreciate it!

Are you talking about this chap?

I couldn't find anything high res, but here's what I did find:
http://www.acceleratingfuture.com/michael/blog/images/Metal_Gear_D_specs.png
http://mgs13.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/180px-metal_gear_d.jpg
http://www.ugo.com/games/metal-gear-solid-characters/images/metal-gear-d.jpg
All these were google sourced - what did you search for? I'm not sure how useful they are as they're all low res - but I figure it's a good base to redraw from if time permits?
The problem is I'm trying to make a realistic movie poster. Not so much a drawing as a real life-like-looking thing. That's why I could also use a model if one existed.
But thanks anyway.
This is the best 2d version that I could find:
http://metalgear.wikia.com/wiki/File:Tx-55metalgear.jpg (http://metalgear.wikia.com/wiki/File:Tx-55metalgear.jpg)
With the right filters, it could look semi-realistic -- that is, if the jpeg compression hadn't crushed it so badly.
Hmmm I wonder if you could kit bash one up, how good are you at modelling? If you could do that you could photograph with a macro to get exactly what you want, like these perhaps?

May be worth a shot rather than build a model in 3DS
You mean build one out of scratch? :o
I think I would need more than just those two diagrams.
I think I'll render a 2D version myself & make the poster look sort of like the style of First Blood's:
http://www.idave.com/pka106.jpg
The Metal Gear MKII from Snatcher looks pretty close in style to the TX as well. :-\
I think your plan is solid and I can't wait to see it!! :)
Thank you so much, UglyJoe!
A small file goes such a long way!
I had to resize the image almost 400% (which looked horrible); posterize it, add a blurred, darkened layer to that; then an overlay to that; & finally a chrome-textured "color burn" layer to that, & finally got this:
It's not finished yet; I'm going to add some foliage in front of the Metal Gear so you won't see the entire thing, & the parts you do see will be touched up with lighting, dodges & burns, etc.
I could use some constructive criticism, & some suggestions, preferably with the crew on the bottom. :-\
I'm not sure who would've directed this, James Cameron maybe? Kojima Productions wasn't around at this time, so that's why it says Konami.
Non-constructive!
- Looks nice, considering the source image. I thought for sure you'd end up with JPEG artifacts everywhere once you started applying filters.
Constructive!
- It appears to be floating. Make the ground it's standing on more defined.
- Its outline clashes too much with the background. Darken it up.
I would agree with Joe, darken the outlines and currently it's floating in the forest way up, but it does look good - it's testament to your skills that you managed to turn that little image into this.
Lastly, looking at the cast choice I'm ecstatic to see Sean Connery, Tom Berenger and Michael Biehn. Though I'd rather see Jim Cameron as the director ;)
I think the poster looks very nice except for the text at the top. It reminds me too much of the stuff I see on Icanhascheezburger, so maybe a smaller font size, and some more serious text for that. Otherwise, it's lookin' good!
NO ONE IS SAFE! looks kind of funny to me, actually. I think that the impact font kind of doesn't blend real good.
As for the "floating" image, I've already got that covered.
So let's see:
-Blend/darken outlines
-Amend text at top
Also, James Cameron as director - anyone else agree? I'm leaning towards that as well.
Anyone have any suggestions for what the text should read at the top? I'll be experimenting with the font/color.
I think the actual text is fitting, it's just the style that I would change. I probably should've worded my post better. A smaller font size, and a more serious font.
Yeah, I know, but I didn't think the phrase through-enough. I'm still open for suggestions if anyone doesn't like it.
As for the font, I think something along Georgia is better. What do you suggest, Nintendodork?
I like georgia.
Maybe No one is safe ? I don't know.
The font is Secret Service Typewriter.
I just looked through the fonts in word, and these were the four that I liked most.
You could try a font that looks similar to the Metal Gear logo. Maybe that would be a bit much. :/
Taking a look at those fonts again, I think "Ruach LET" would fit with the theme of that poster.
Does Ruach LET look like this?
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/letraset/ruach/ruach/
Yes. It was in that document.
I like Cheapsign (lower case):

and Headline One:

Fonts aren't embedded in documents. If he doesn't have the font installed, it'll just pick some other font to use. Also, I respectfully disagree about Ruach LET. The tagline and the title shouldn't both be in their own stylized fonts. They should either both use the same stylized font, or one should be more traditional and the other stylized. Since the Metal Gear font/logo is set in stone, the tagline should be traditional.
You can put fonts in word documents? (http://www.websitegoodies.com/smilies/confused0071.gif)
....
I'm sure this is a misunderstanding. You know? The fonts up there are the top? You click on the list and they all drop down, and you can choose from a list..?
Just because you have those fonts installed in your computer doesn't mean that other people will have the exact same ones installed in their PCs. If Word can't find the required font on your Fonts folder, it'll use a similar looking one.
I would say a generic movie poster font would work better. When in doubt, Helvetica.

Here's my work so far:

This is still not the final one! I've got to fix the lighting on the leaves in front - it doesn't look quite right to me. I'm also going to add more foliage in front of the Metal Gear.
How does the font look? I'm still not 100% sure about it. But it's definitely going in the right direction.
Looks a lot better. I'm not sure more foliage would be a good idea -- might cover it up too much.
The font is better than Impact and reminds me of the in-game font. I'm not sure if it's the drop-shadow or the bright red that's killing it for me. I would suggest a darker red.
I think that it should be a little more...maybe like discreet color or something. Like UglyJoe said, it should be a tad darker.
I'll experiment with a darker red.
As for adding more foliage, I mean little things like tall strands of grass & plants.
It definitely looks better - I think there would be a softer an larger shadow on the leaf from the MG though right? The light source looks to be behind the MG, but the shadows don't match up with that, so maybe that's why it looks out of place. The top of the leaf would be more lit, with the lower darker and the leaf looks too thick to have as sharp a shadow. I'm probably looking too much into it though..
Here's the third run:
Come to look at it, I think it's a little too dark now.
Same with the foliage, not sure that was a good idea. :/
I should've saved copies before making changes. :( Oh well; I still have my photoshop file at school. :-\
I think it looks great. The font at the top is always the thing that gets me, though. I just don't like it. It's stands out too much for me. Just my opinion though.
How would you make it look like?
If it were me, I'd just chop off the no one is safe. :-\ it's just kinda flashy for a super tank. I like the foliage idea, but maybe I'd shrink it just a tad.

I kind of agree with CMM, but if you really wanted to keep it there, maybe a smaller size
and translucent text or something? I dunno, I'm not really sure what I'd do to it.Edit*
I thought of looking through Google images to see if I could find anything cool, and I found this from a Marvel poster.
Not necessarily translucent text, but maybe something that doesn't stand out so much from the rest of the poster. That's what I was thinking of.
Ultimatum? Damnit, why, Marvel, why?! >:(
Anyways, I see what you're saying - but the font stays - unless someone has another suggestion?
And the foliage kinda sucks - especially in the front where I used "liquify." If you look (not so) closely you can tell how bad it is.
Edit:
Yes! I fixed the "foliage" in a way I like. This time I have two proposals:
a.) I really like the red text & want to stick with it & used a linear light blend mode on it (it's also smaller & uses ellipses instead of "!" :
b.) This time the Luminosity blend mode is used, which ignores the red color altogether, & is more discreet:
I also added a wind effect to the "METAL GEAR" title. Let me know if you don't like it; I can always switch it back (saved a copy this time ;)).
Edit: I'm going to see about adding a "reflection" on the glass part of the Metal Gear.
B is a lot better than A, I think. :)
I agree with B. Did you think of spicing up the logo and possibly credits with some colour / effects? I don't think the Wind is good as it makes the logo look like poor quality.
http://www.smashingapps.com/2009/06/08/50-creative-masterpieces-of-logo-designs-using-gradient-effects.html
I'm wondering if the depth of field could be increased with some touch up layering on the mid and foreground foliage. It could be hard to achieve without a tablet to draw them on convincingly though.
I also say B is better.
Okay, no wind effect - got it.
I still like the red color though. Maybe I'll do something in between. :-\
Edit: Canned the red - decided to go with a brighter than olive drab green, somewhat like the color of the main title.
Edit: Canned the dark blue - saw what was meant about not matching with the "supertank" & decided to go with a more gray-like color.
Edit: I decided to do two of them:

Cool - I actually prefer yours to the other examples you link to. Much more evocative of 80s movies for so many reasons.
I think Téa Leoni would make an awesome Meryl, but I don't think Michael Biehn would be playing Snake in Metal Gear Solid; I'd imagine him being canned from the series after the first one - kinda like in Terminator. :D
If I did one for Metal Gear 2, it would read: MEL GIBSON RICHARD CRENNA TOM BERENGER METAL GEAR DOLPH LUNDGREN CHRISTINA APPLEGATE & SEAN CONNERY because you know how sometimes a big star is on the very end
but Michael Biehn was in Terminator 2 :)
I'd like David Ginola as snake if he could be dubbed over with David Hayter's voice and it worked..
