Post by: Cam3ron@FW on December 29, 2009, 09:49:51 pm
Just curious to know which one of these consoles have you had as a kid?  NES, Famicom, Sega Master System or other?

I had a NES... actually about 6 of them, stupid 72 pin connectors >:-(

NES and Master System.

Really? I have not met one person in real life or know one person in real life that had a Master System...  but I can say that it housed some of the best sonic games after playing them :)

Something from the earlier Gens, around the time of NES since gaming was big around then.

NES only.
I didn't even know Sega and the Master System existed before I bought my first video game magazine some time in 1991. All the places in my vicinity only sold Nintendo consoles and games.

Ya really.  My mom bought it for my dad as a birthday gift (I guess she figured he'd enjoy Hang-On).  It was a bundle with the system, hookups, two controllers, light phaser, 3d goggles, and a handful of games.  I'm not sure if it was a real bundle, or if she just bought everything all at once.

It had better zapper games, for sure.  Safari Hunt is a better pack-in than Duck Hunt.  Missile Defense 3D is a better zapper game than anything on the NES, imo.

Nobody ever knew what the console was, though.  I can't quite remember if we even knew who SEGA were at the time -- we probably did, since I think we got it after the Genesis came out, but I'd have to ask my older brother to confirm.  What remains a mystery to me, though, is that we somehow knew how to access the hidden Snail Maze (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snail_Maze) game.  Either we figured it out purely by chance, or somebody knew enough about the console to know how to access the game.

Our game library for it was always pretty small.  I imagine now that the games were likely hard to find since nobody had the hardware to play them.  On the off chance that my parents did find them, they were probably on sale (since the store would be trying to get rid of them).  We had a couple of gems (Space Harrier, Penguin Land, Shinobi), but missed out on most of the best SMS games.

NES, SNES Sega Genesis

edit: I can't believe I forgot the Game Boy! Sorry.

The poll is on Nes, SMS or Famicom guys, which one(s) of those three did you have?

UglyJoe:  I think even the Game Gear was more common.  I've seen quite a few of those at shops now, as for SMS, I believe I've seen the games, but not the console.  Game Gear was pretty much just a handheld SMS anyways...  Right now, I have Sonic 2 & Sonic Chaos on VC.  They are both great...

Which one did I get first? Neither. I enjoyed playing the NES at my friend's house but my mom wouldn't let me have one because she said that video games make you stupid. My dad is an avid gamer too, and when he finally convinced my mom to let me have a video game system, the amazing SNES came out, and my dad got me that one instead. I grew up with the SNES. :D

A few years later one of my classmates was selling his NES with a bunch of games (good ones, mind you) for a low price so I saved up the money and bought it from him. Most people around here sell their last-gen systems to make money to get the expensive next-gen ones. I can't do that, I get emotionally attached to my stuff.

I have never heard of the Master System until I got Internet access. Sega never really caught up here, Nintendo was king and nothing else. At most you'd see a Genesis or a Saturn, but the Master System is very scarce where I live. It took me years to get one, but I finally own a SMS II with a Light Phaser and a decent couple of games, and just as UglyJoe I'm really impressed with the accuracy of the Sega light gun. It's got its share of great games and very colorful graphics, but in the sound department and overall I stick with the NES.

Oh boy, all those vidya gaemz surely made me reaaaaaaally stoopid. ::)

I thought when you said "or other", you meant other video game systems that we grew up with as a kid. Seeing as that's what it said in your post. :P

NES when I was about 5.  Still have the same one, with the original 72 pin... still plays games perfectly as long as a Game Genie is attached (otherwise, nothing plays).

Commodore 64 ;D I didn't get an NES until just a few years ago, and actually had a Famicom before an NES, since back the Famicom is more relyable than the toaster NES.

As for the Master System, I've never even seen one irl, let alone owned one. Nowadays any real desire I would have to get one are trampled by emulation and collections that house its best games. If the homebrew scene for it was active I'd definitely be more interested as its a more powerful hardware than the Nintendo.

Anyone here from Australia? I've heard that there, the NES vs Master System rivalry was the complete opposite as most other territories with the Master System outselling the NES 9 to 1 in the land down under.

You're thinking of Brazil there.

Funny how so many companies used to try to make computers.  I have a Colecovision.  Space Panic, Venture and the two Donkey Kongs are awesome.  I only have 9 games on Colecovision though...

Yes i'm from australia and grew up with the atari age back then the sega was a lot cheaper than the nes so it sold a lot more units however the master system seems a rarer find at flea markets these days but the master system games are more common than nes games

I grew up with a NES that my dad had before I was born. I also had a Genesis when I was a bit older, and a N64 when I was about 11.

Interesting to hear everyone's stories!

My parents gave me an NES for Christmas when I was 13.  My introduction to video games had come a few years earlier when my dad brought home a Commodore Vic20 with a bunch of awesome games (Avengers, Gorf, etc).  The NES with its light gun and SMB totally blew the Vic20 out of the water though!

In high school I had the NES and my best friend had a Sega MS.  We ended up playing the Sega MS more, but that was just because he had a lot more games for it and not necessarily because it was a better system.  Also his parents kept his kitchen stocked with Pepsi and junk food so we spent a lot more time at his place than mine!

My wife, who is Japanese, had a Famicom when she was a kid.  That, coupled with my own nostalgia for my NES games and the fact that I now live in Japan, is what sparked my interest in collecting Famicom games!

NES was the first home console we got.

My dad ran a store and use to rent out NES games and also repaired arcade cabinets and put them in stores at stuff.

My dad use to play a lot of NES/SNES. I remember playing a lot of SMB3 with him. We had this strategy guide for SMB3 but it got lost over the years. I would LOVE to have it back.
