Title: Twilight Princess - Wii or Gamecube?
Post by: manuel on February 04, 2010, 03:19:53 am
Just a short question I'd love to hear your opinions about.

I still don't own Twilight Princess, but I'd sure love to play it as soon as possible.
Now, should I buy the Wii version or the Gamecube version?

I'm kind of drawn to the Gamecube version, because of the controls. (I'd also have a reason to buy me one of those nice white Gamecube controllers) I read lots of opinions that the Wiimote controls aren't as good as they could be, as the title wasn't originally planned for the Wii.

I'm hoping for a lot of opinions.

I vote Gamecube because for almost any game that supports GC controls, it's the better option (SSBB and Muramasa come to mind).  Really the only reason I got TP on the Wii instead of the GC because I was drawn into the hype. :D

That video explains better than I can why the Wii version is the one to get.

Definitely Wii.  Add to the reasons above that the GC version will cost you more and I don't think it's in Widescreen.

I played through the Wii version at launch and it remains my favourite Zelda game ever, closely followed by the Game and Watch iteration.
I also like the little things like the sound from the wiimote and the Wii controls - you certainly feel more involved than with regular GC controls, ignore the internet fanboy rant.  It doesn't matter what hand he holds his sword with, in fact it's better if you're right handed.  Link is always a new person and change is ok.

Dork is missing the point, SSBB and Muramasa are a different genre that require dexterity you can't get with the Wiimote.  Besides, both play better on the classic/SFC pad.

Wii, I'll say it again :)

A truly hardcore Zelda player will buy both, try them, then burn the Wii copy because Link's right handed.

Zelda fanboy nitpicking aside, I would still pick the GameCube version.

I own a Wii, but I'm already tired of the gimmickyness. When I played the Wii version (and mind you, I played for at least four or five hours), I got frustrated with the control scheme, as Link would not always do what I wanted him to do which often used up more of my resources than had I been playing on a Gamecube controller.

Wii. I played the gcn version and the wii and im gonna go with wii. theres just something about being able to swing a controller like a sword. You get used to the controls. I beat the normal game in about 47 hours but im still in the 50 level underground thing. blackdeath it wouldnt really be fair to players for him to be left handed considering 98% of the population is right handed.

Thanks for the opinions, guys.

Gamecube doesn't have wide screen, but then again, I don't care for wide screen, as I only own a 4:3 TV at the time and would play it on that.  ;)
Another thing I don't care about is in what hand he holds his sword. It just doesn't matter to me.

I'm still open for both versions, but put in a bid in a YHJ auction for the Gamecube version. If I win that, I'll go with GC. If I get overbid, I'll think some more.

I never played the gamecube version but I would go with that since that may be the last zelda game on a console where link is left handed.

Now that I think about it, it would be nice to have the 3 generations all one console - so I'd get GC, but I still think the Wii version is better.

I really loved the Wind Waker controls.
If TP has the same or very similar controls (And judging from youtube "let's play" videos this is the case), this might be the main factor for me to choose the GC version.

I know what you mean, I just really enjoyed playing it on the Wii - but that was at launch.  Sounds like GC is best and safest bet here.

Yes, probably.
Even if in this case Wii should really be better, I think I will still go with the GC version. It will also be much "rarer" than the Wii version, because the GC game is only sold via the Nintendo online store in Japan.

I am pretty sure I'll buy the next Wii Zelda game at launch and then I'll enjoy the new Wii controls.

Good choice, Manuel. ;)  I ended up selling my Wii version of TP about a year or so after I beat it.  I might go out and get the Gamecube version sometime to replay it with the Gamecube controls.

I just won the auction for Gamecube Twilight Princess.  :D And 1900 Yen cheaper than it would have cost me in the Nintendo online store. I also treated myself to a Wavebird controller in the Club Nintendo design.  ;D I always wanted one of those.

Club Nintendo Wavebird.

Sweet.

Oh yeah:

Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me for being too much of a purist.

The opposite argument could also be true. The game is inherently unfair to leftys.

im not trying to be rude. you have a point but only like 2% of the population is left handed including me, and im guessing that they would rather make it easier for the majority to use.

I wish they would include an option for left handed people in every Wii game.  It's annoying to have to do the opposite of what the game says, or to have to use the controls right handed.  Equal rights, I say! :D

The only thing the Wii version really has over the Gamecube version is of course the Twilight Hack, but seeing as how that's outdated and patched now it's really just a matter of preference if you would rather have Windwaker controls or play in an inverted world with waggle. Personally, I bought The GC version at the Wii's launch and instead opted for Trauma Center Second Opinion as my Wii launch title.

I never really even noticed that Link was left-handed until it was pointed out when TP was released.  :o

No nor me, which shows how important it is.  The same people whine about it that did about Wind Waker's cel shading and the game turned out great.

As for the Wii version, it's a bit more than an inverted world with waggle lol.  The fishing puzzles are better, many of the sidequests are more involving and as a control scheme it IS more intuitive but it's become cool to hate on the Wii so people do.

It's not being a purist at all it's just grumbling over change - how does that make you more of a fan?
I guess, all those purist fans won't be playing the next zelda game either then, considering it's also on Wii and Link's not right-handed:

To be honest, it's such a stupid reason - like me saying I won't play zelda 2 because it's side-on or zelda 3 because he has pink hair or Link's Awakening because it's not in Hyrule or the Oracle and Minish Cap games because they're made by Capcom or OOT because it's 3D..

Every Zelda game is different and deviates a little which is part of what gives the games so much personality.
If you whinge and whine at those changes with stubbornness then you miss out on all the charisma that Aonuma and the team put into them.
