Title: Famicom City TV Game Cafe / Bar opens in Tokyo
Post by: retrogamecity on March 23, 2010, 12:48:19 am
Hi !

Not sure if this is the right place on the forum for this .. :) Just thought that some of you might find this interesting.

A new cafe / bar has just opened in Japan (Tokyo, Shibuya) called " Famicom City " It is Famicom themed / colored with lots of game systems, new and old set up for people to play while having a nice frosty beverage or snack. I live in Tokyo but haven't checked it out yet.. looks pretty cool  8) , hope to head down there on the weekend and have a look. It is open from 5pm - 5am the next morning. Customers are given the choice of ¥1980 all you can drink / play for the first two hours and then ¥490 per 30mins after that.. or one of the other plans they have on the site. ( I am in no way affiliated with this bar / cafe by the way :) .. just thought some people might like to see the photos on their site ) Some parts are still under construction like their in store game list.. looking forward to heading down there and checking it out.

Here is their website for anyone who would like to take a look : http://www.famicomcity.com

Cheers,

Andy

Hey just noticed one more thing while reading through their website, you can bring your own games and play them there! Interesting idea I thought.

What would you play while having a cold one with a couple of friends there? I wonder what they would say if you turned up with some wacky 100in1 pirate cart? :)

I think I'll have some Kunio-kun with my beer thanks !

What a nice place, the red and white color give it a fantastic famicom look.
Drink a couple of beer with friends playing old school retro games is priceless

Interesting find!  My review (based solely on the website):

On the one hand its a pretty cool idea to have table side Famicoms at a cafe.  The red and white decor looks kind of cool, though as with a lot of Japanese cafes the apparent heavy use of fluorescent lighting gives the place an uninspired, sterile feel to it (again, judging solely from the picture on the site).

I would also be a little concerned that this shop is going to get sued by Nintendo at some point as nowhere on the site does it indicate is has a license to be using a crapload of Nintendo's trademarks and copyrighted works as the basis for the shop.  In my experience shops in Japan get away with more of that than in North America but even so they might be pushing their luck with this.

Also, 1980 yen for basically a 2 hour drink bar is a rip-off.  Most family restaurants in Japan have unlimited drink bars for about 200 yen.  So basically you are just paying 1800 yen to play a Famicom for 2 hours.  In light of the fact that in a lot of stores you can outright BUY a Famicom for that much......well, you get my point.
