Title: Final Fantasy II (SNES Virtual Console)
Post by: NintendoNerds on March 24, 2010, 04:12:33 pm
Well, one of my dreams has finally come true! This has been released for the Virtual Console!! Has anyone downloaded this or does anyone plan on downloading it? My only beef with the game is that it requires the Classic Controller  :-\

Well yeah, there's not enough buttons on the wiimote to accommodate all of the SNES' buttons. Not that you'll need them all but it's still the silly way the Wii's been programmed.

They could have used the A, 1, and 2 buttons to use all of the game's functionality.

I edited the title of the 1st post to specify. Thanks Jedi.

Hum, I don't know but can't you use the GameCube's controller?

No, not with this game. The software does not support that interface.

Like I said, the Wii's architecture isn't the best made.

Essentially, they made a template for each version of the virtual console and built around that. This includes region and system.

I'm aware that FFIV only needs roughly four buttons to work, but because all SNES games use the same template as virtual console games, they all need the classic controller to play, regardless of how many buttons may actually be used.

In order to alter it to accomodate just a Wiimote, the game's code would have to be altered extensively to the point where the game would have to be rewritten as a Wiiware title, which is much more difficult than simply porting the original SNES game to work on the Virtual Console emulation software.

I own the original Final Fantasy II SNES cartridge. that said, if the Wii VC version is just that......its the worst of the bunch. The game was remade for handhelds in the past few years and they are quite good, espically the DS remake of Final Fantasy IV DS.

Same classic gameplay
Restored Japanese Difficulty
Less censorship
Fully voiced cutscenes
Classic Final Fantasy IV.

If you can, get that. FF2 SNES is ho-hum.

Agreed. I'm surprised too, usually dubs are bad but the one for FFIV DS is good. FFIV DS is like taking FFIX style graphics, and giving it the story of FFIV. IX used lots of great references to IV, but that's not really the topic here.

I hope Square will remake Final Fantasy V and espically VI in the same manner. While I enjoyed Final Fantasy IV, V and VI to me stand as some of the best RPGs ever made. IV is there too, but to a lesser degree.

Why would it not work with the Gamecube Controller

That's just how they released the game.

Why would it not work with the Gamecube Controller

To my understanding, when they initially designed the original Virtual Console software, it was all done as a template system by system in terms of control scheme. In the case of the American Virtual Console software, I guess they decided only to use the classic controller in order to implement every SNES button, even though some games don't use every single SNES controller button.

As far as I know, only the N64 VC allows use of the Gamecube controller.

It's funny too because the same thing happens in Wii games. It's great that you can use a Gamecube controller in Brawl and Mario Kart, but why not Tatsunoko vs. Capcom? I know, the Gamecube controller is not good for a Street Fighter game, but on my Gamecube, I was able to use a Gamecube => PSX controller converter and use my arcade stick. It would have been nice to be able to do that with Tatsunoko vs Capcom.

The Wii has very silly software architecture that defies all means of common sense as Nintendo, once again, has to do things their way.

For the VC, it does seem that the contoller options are decided by Nintendo.  However, other games are up to the developer to implement.  If the developers don't allow them (for whatever reason), that's not Nintendo's fault.  I think devs see such things as "extra" features and, as such, they're the first things to get cut when their budget or timeline gets cut.
