Title: Curious: Which consoles are considered "rare" ?
Post by: FamicomRetroGamer on March 26, 2010, 06:17:31 pm
This question goes out to the ones who are informed, I'm really curious.

But honestly I don't think it can be so many, because they can be found for cheap prices, okay, Neo Geo & Neo Geo CD cost a bit too much but still affordable. ;D

I think it mainly depends on where you live. A toaster NES is rare in Japan but common as dirt in the States, the opposite happens with the Famicom.

An example closer to me. Where I live, the Sega Master System Model 1 is extremely rare and expensive, but SMS II systems are everywhere! In the US, the situation is the exact opposite.

Although portable, I know the Game & Watch is quite a rarity.

No local used gamestores near me sell Sega systems or games....at all. By that, I consider

-Master System and games
-Gamegear systems and games
-Genesis systems and games
-Sega CD systems and games
-Sega 32X systems and games
-Sega Saturn systems and games
-Sega Dreamcast systems and games

ALL to be rare.

Since I have one ho-hum classic game store, and two good ones within reasonable commute from me, the rarest systems for me are Japanese ones.

On my personal list, I'd say a Sharp Famicom Titler.

Neo Geo's are more of an investment than they are a system. At least that's what many classic game collectors tell me. By the looks of it, it may be cheaper overall to get an MVS arcade cabinet than it would be to get an AES.

eBay UK got them for cheap prices, if you live in UK that is, it'll be quite low price.

From that list I got:
Sega Master System
Sega Game Gear
Sega Mega Drive (aka Genesis)
Sega MegaCD (aka Sega CD)
Sega Saturn
Sega Dreamcast

All in very good/excellent condition, I make sure they're well treated.

Sega 32x is becoming hard to find, people stop selling these units and if they do sell, they'll ask for quite a lot.

Lol, my Sega Game Gear is in excellent condition, hasn't got boxed and doesn't need to blow up games, better than the one I paid more (returned this one).

NES-101 Toploader
Sega Master System
Turbo Grafx-16
Panasonic 3DO
Philips CD-i

Those are some of the uncommon/rare systems in the states.

I would think Nintendo pong consoles would count, Odyssey 1 (complete) might be on the list as well

Ok gremlin. I think some other systems that could be added would be:

Miscellaneous pong consoles (watch the avgn video to see what I mean)
A complete set of a commodore 64 computer might be hard to find

How about the MSX's? They're pretty expensive, no?

I got:

Sinclair ZX Spectrum I
Sinclair ZX Spectrum II

Are these two rare or expensive?

They're unboxed but have the cables and games, some are still sealed, which i find quite uncommon.

Speccies are actually quite common, especially if you live in the UK.

To go one further, the Computer TV-Game (which is part of the aforementioned series) is probably one of the rarest consoles out there. Still looking for one... <_<

Magic Hand and the Chirote vaccum consoles go further.

For me, it's like the opposite. I find sega stuff a lot, but barely any nintendo stuff. NES consoles, and SNES consoles are incredibly rare in my area. If I finally do find one, it either doesn't work, or is way overpriced.  :(

They're not exactly rare, but they tend to be on the pricey side, especially the two Turbo-R systems (FS-A1GT and FS-A1ST).

i would say:
philips CD-i
3DO (any model)
neo-geo's
turbografx16

really any system/home computer in high demand/didnt make the cut in the market
