Castlevania is amazing. Almost all the 2D games are excellent. I reccomend Bloodlines (for Genesis), Circle of the Moon (GBA), and Symphony of Night (PS1). People say that IV is very good as well, but I have not played it enough to judge.

The 2D Castlevania games are fantastic. Stay away from the 3D ones. Castlevania 2 kind of sucks too, but I guess some people don't mind it. The best are Castlevania 3, Symphony of the Night, and Dawn of Sorrow. The GBA games are great, as is the original. I never really got into the SNES or Genesis games myself, but they're quite good. And don't overlook the original Game Boy games, especially the second one!

Simon's Quest is only good for the music and the Graveyard Duck. Akumajou Denetsu is the best one (not too much story, perfect difficulty and has wonderful music.).

Simon's Quest is awesome.  Just use a FAQ to figure out where you need to go.

I highly suggest Super Castlevania 4(SNES) and Symphony of the Night(PS1) Absolutely my favorite Castlevania games!

Castlevania 1 is awesome! :D

That's the only one I've had time to play. :P

I have the three NES games & plan on getting more, but first I need to get into Castlevania 2 - I only barely started it! :o

Castlevania 2 is actually good too even though it has gotten a lot of criticism but I think that's only because the AVGN said it sucked and everyone else follows especially those young punks....

No, I played it for myself and I hated it.

Castlevania 2 is the true origin of the Metroidvania games whether people like to admit it or not.

I really liked Simon's Quest, although given the Engrish, it's nearly unbeatable without a walkthrough. I actually hated the SNES instalment because I found the visuals dull and unvarying and the soundtrack terribly uneven in quality (great music for the first few stages, horrible and repetitive for the rest). Some people are huge fans of SCV4, however, so I guess I have to respect the eight-direction whip and rotating room.
And my favourites by far are ROB and SOTN. 1 and 3 were also superb.

From what I've read, the Engrish is pretty much a dead-on translation of the Japanese.  It wasn't the translators that made it confusing, it was the developers ;D

I know what you mean.  It's not bad, but it really suffers from early-SNES-game-itis.

Yeah you got that right about Castlevania 2 but back then we didn't had the internet we had a little monthly magazine called Nintendo Power to answer our prayers yay....man think about it, now we have the internet but back then it was totally different. There was also that really expensive hotline...har!

The problem with Castlevania 2 is that the townsfolk downright LIE in both the English AND Japanese version. Indeed the developers were assholes.

I downloaded SOTN on XBLA last night and played it for the first time.  I love it!  I already liked the Castlevania series, but the slightly better graphics and more in-depth gameplay help too. :)

The later Playstation 3D games were next to garbage IMO, but the N64 games are excellent--a highlight of the series for me (might as well get the expanded version if you get any)...

Otherwise, there aren't any Castlevania games I absolutely hate--it's a fantastic series.
