Honestly, though - I'm not excited about this anymore. :-\
Blame licensing for ruining another game.
I think people need to take the rose tinted glasses off when it comes to Goldeneye. Not only unplayable today because of one analog stick control set up, but the game is an aged FPS in every way.
Remaking it now after Perfect Dark was remade is just a money making scheme.
Unplayable? Really? I guess we should get rid of all these Famicom games too! After all, d-pads and two-button control schemes have long been replaced by superior technology, right?
Personally I was hoping for a new game by the original creators (the Timesplitters guys). It's cool to see this, but I doubt I'll get it.
Goldeneye is now, and always shall be, one of the greatest video games ever. It is to video games what "The Empire Strikes Back" is to movies: the gold standard.
I'm getting pretty fed up with all these stupid remakes of classics. I see Hollywood is remaking "Red Dawn" and "Arthur" now. I guess the vultures have almost squeezed every last drop of blood money they can from ruining 80s pop culture and are now moving on to the 1990s.

I think that's a little bit extreme. Have you tried playing goldeneye recently? I can barely move around in that game :P. blame it on the n64 controller if you want. I think it's just dated.

Gold standard? I totally disagree. A gold standard has to stand the test of time in it's native form. I can still sit through empire, I can't say the same for goldeneye, and I know I'm not alone.
He's right. It is one of the greatest games of all time. I didn't know this is agreeable.
He's right again. "Test of Time"? oh gee another one. :'(
No, I stick by my previous statement: Goldeneye is one of the gold standards of video games.
It has totally passed the test of time. Back in 1998-1999 one of my roommates had an N64 and I used to play Goldeneye all the time, especially the multiplayer mode.
In 2008 I hadn't played the game in almost 10 years, but found a cheap copy of it (as well as a cheap N64) and brought it home. It hadn't lost any of its enjoyment value, I spent hours playing the thing.
And of course the multi-player mode is just as fun as ever, providing that you have opponents who are roughly the same skill level as you.
Sure if you compare the graphics and controls to more recent games it is way more primitive and not as user-friendly, but that doesn't make it less playable. Using that sniper rifle to pick off Russian soldiers remains to this day one of my favorite past-times! ;D
But I think the idea of re-making it is stupid.
If GoldenEye were released the same as it was but with an online feature, I'd play it.
However, I've already (long-passed) accepted the impossibility of this.
First Person Shooters repeat themselves too much as it is. A remake of Goldeneye, a thirteen year old FPS that has aged about as well as a bottle of cheap wine stored in a humid attic?
Yeah like I said, not interested.
I think this guy explains why Goldeneye remains the gold standard to this day way better than I ever could:

I don't really give a crap about how they remake it, if the can capture the 4 player magic--I'm in. I never played 007 till after college and had a couple of casual gaming friends (all girls), and we had a blast shooting each other. It was quickly replaced with nightfire, where again we had a blast with 4 player first person shooting. I'm a much more hardcore gamer, so it was usually 3 vs 1, but we all had a blast.
I just don't understand how so many of the bond games can screw up the 4 player multiplayer. I could care less about Craig or whatever else. Just get the 4play right!
It was Rare that made Goldeneye - I don't know where that Timesplitters comment came from? Maybe a handful of guy went there after Rare got bought.
So, it's not Rare and it probably won't 'feel' like Goldeneye, but believe me getting four guys together to play Goldeneye now is just as much fun as it ever was. I did it recently, yeah it felt aged but that's part of the fun, the nostalgia added to it actually, as people started remembering those hiding places and the armour spawn points.
It's not as fresh, but it's still as juicy :D

Several of the key people involved in the development of Goldeneye and Perfect Dark left Rare to form Free Radical Design, the company that made the Timesplitters games before being bought by Crytyek and becoming Crytek UK. Kinda like how the Fallout guys left and formed Troika, although in this case the designers of the games weren't part of the team (not that you'd know it from playing the games, they play like goofier, more advanced versions of Perfect Dark).
Good god I would not go near anything made by Free Radical again, didn't they run into serious trouble?
Last I saw from them was abysmal!
i still like goldeneye.. but i agree it's lost a little of it's magic.
that being said. the multiplayer is still sick!
if anything i'm curious of what they make of it.. maybe better controls and a new look will make it exciting for me again :)
Goldeneye is awesome!
