Title: Nintendo 3DS! Nintendo 3DS!
Post by: petik1 on June 18, 2010, 08:35:47 am
If there's another topic about this, then delete this, but who's excited about the new 3DS?????? It has an awesome line up of games like Starfox 64 3D, Ocarina of Time 3D, PilotWings Resort, a new paper mario game, a new mario kart, and a new animal crossing game! I'm about to sh*t my pants!

EDIT: Kid Icarus: Uprising too! Holy crap!

Me too! When I first saw the tech demo, I was really amazed. I was pretty skeptical, thinking it would be maybe a more detailed DS, but it's really like you're peering down into the screen!  The control stick was a nice addition too. The DS needed one of those since the start.  The games look awesome too. My favorites so far are Kid Icarus: Uprising and OoT 64 3D.

Isometric, that is...

Too bad the new pokemon  games won't use the 3DS's ability, they're for the DS. Thankfully, there's backwards compatibility.
Paper Mario is my favorite game, it's probably one of the first games I ever played, so I can't wait to see it

Yeah, Paper Mario should look really cool -- lots of 2D layers with a real depth between them.

Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS! Nintendo 3DS!

The 3DS has zero VB potential.

It's not cumbersome to use like the VB and numerous hands-on reports say that the 3D effect works great as long as you have the screen held at the proper angle (which may be an issue with longer gaming sessions -- too soon to tell).  You can also adjust or turn off the 3D effects if you don't like them.

Plus, on top of the 3D feature, it also has motion-detectors and a gyroscope.  This thing is multi-gimmick!

And everyone can make all the "dumb gimmick" arguments they want, but, at its absolute worst, the 3DS is a more powerful DSi (GC/Wii level graphics) with a larger top screen and an analog controller.  It's a DS with practical upgrades.  As long as there's good games for it (and the lineup so far looks amazing if you like known IPs), there's really no rational scenario where this thing bombs like the VB.

Either way, both consoles look wicked as shit. And as soon as I heard wii graphics i was all :o then is was like ;D. Even though the wii is the least powerful of the consoles, it's still fascinating that they can have the same type graphics on a portable

EDIT: Someone needs to make a mod where the virtual boy shoots red lasers!

Please don't bring up the Virtual Boy. I want to hurt Nintendo so badly for fucking that up and for their treatment of Gunpei Yokoi over that shit. He pretty much told em they should either wait and do the VB the right way (in color) or not do it at all and they told him fuck it, go w/ the red and black since it's cheap! Whose fault was that, then?

Really, I need to not think about it or I get pissed off. Yokoi was a genius.

The virtual Boy was great. The 3DSi will do well too, even thought it was rushed into market.

Is the 3DS the same size as the DSi XL? I hope that 3D can be turn on and off plus not to many gimmicks because I want to play alot of games by just using the analog stick, d-pad and buttons.  ;D

Mario 64 DS might be alot easier to control on the 3DS. I wonder if Ocarina of Time will be a remake or a straight port.  :)

I hope that you can use the analog stick for older DS games instead of the D pad  :o And Ocarina, graphically is remade, but they probably left the overall gameplay alone with a few tweaks.

If a new Earthbound is on the way, then that's a strange way of announcing it  ::)
Don't get your hopes up, don't expect anything, but hope for the best.
It kills me that they haven't released a price or date yet. GRRRRRR it's eating at my soul! Until then, I'll just dust off my good ol' N64 to play starfox and Paper Mario.

Wait, Nintendodork, you were there? Please tell me you stole one of the prototypes and brought the lady with it  :D
Also, press shots show purple and orange 3DS's, while both NA and JP nintendo sites only have red, black, and blue. I want the orange one!

Who said I was there?  :P  No, I've mostly been watching ClassicGameRoom's E3 coverage and a few other videos.  (Can't find a specific video about just the 3DS right now).  And yeah, I saw a few videos where there were just women standing there holding the 3DSes instead of just a plastic table or something.  Talk about awkward. You'd be standing there less than a foot away from someone just watching you play the thing, and then just put it back in their hands when you're done.
It gives objectifying women a whole new meaning!

The 3ds does completely draw you in and that has both good and bad potential.

I'm hoping they do improve the design a little more. I'm not a big fan of:

the slider volume
the power where the start and select used to be (I just know I'm going to turn it off when reaching for start)
the start select and home buttons are cheap bumpy things rather than buttons
it seems thick and big
the top screen isn't as tall as the dsi screen.
Probably no way to move the dsi games I've bought.

It's a day one buy if:
3d works for DS games that do the top screen in 3d.

The power button is in a really weird spot. I doubt DS games will work in 3D.

How do you know the start and select are cheap and bumpy?

That could be done if said DS games used Z-buffer values for depth (or something similar) in their 3D environments. The 3DS could get a pretty nifty stereoscopic effect out of them with a bit of tweaking (that could be hardcoded in the 3DS' firmware). Kind of like colorizing monochrome GB games based on the particular game being played.

Hopefully Nintendo thought about the Game Boy games on the GBC when they were thinking of the 3DS.  That would be a really cool feature to have.  If they could do it for GB games on a GBC, then there's no reason they couldn't do it for the 3DS.

I don't think anyone has said exactly which screen they're using, but it's probably using a parallax barrier to achieve the 3d effect.  This article explains it better than I can:

Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS! Nintendo 3DS!
Post by: petik1 on June 21, 2010, 04:04:02 pm
I don't think Nintendo would ever do something like that. When it was first announced I said "Oh, cool." and forgot about it for a while. Now, region lock? ???
Also, tankexmortis brought up something interesting. The analog stick on the 3DS doesn't have those notches around it like earlier analog sticks on nintendo hardware.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS! Nintendo 3DS!
Post by: tankexmortis on June 21, 2010, 04:27:33 pm
I hate those notches SO MUCH. Being able to play Starfox 64 and Ocarina of Time without them will be a dream come true. 3D? Whatever. I'm far more excited about the lack of notches.

Well, that and Kid Icarus. And Contra. And Paper Mario. And Saints Row. And Super Monkey Ball. And de Blob. And Assassin's Creed. And A Boy and His Blob. And Bomberman. If just half of those are launch titles, I am going to be poor for a very long time.

QuoteAssassin's Creed....Saints Row
Yuck. One of Nintendo's few flaws is trying to stay with the PS3 and 360 by making dumbed down versions of popular games on those systems. Like that really bad Modern Warfare game on the Wii and the MW2 game on the DS. I think if they think of their own idea and don't  base it off of one of the earlier games in the series, the 3DS could pull off Assassin's Creed. That would be pretty cool to see as long as it wasn't an attempt at one of the first two games on a new system.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS! Nintendo 3DS!
Post by: tankexmortis on June 23, 2010, 07:50:23 am
I think they've barely started to go after the Xbox/PS3 market, and games like those, Dead or Alive, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Metal Gear Solid being announced this early is a good sign that they're finally coming to their senses. I've never thought that style of games is as interesting as the ones Nintendo makes, but it's about damn time they courted every market instead of just going after young kids, Nintendo fans, and casual gamers.

Anyway, Nintendo isn't the one making these games so it's hardly their fault.  Didn't the DS Assassin's Creed game get pretty good reviews? The 3DS has the horsepower to handle fairly faithful conversions of these series without losing much, and the unique features of the system could add some interesting gameplay and visual aspects. I'm looking forward to seeing what these companies do.

Free to those who purchase the Ultimate NES Remix available on December 5th! If it's $10 or less, I'm definitely getting it.

(The Famicom theme, that is.)
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS! Nintendo 3DS!

The new Ultimate NES Remix is going to be a download AND a retail game. The price is $29.99. Also on December 5, Nintendo will release a disk version of NES Remix 1 + 2 on Wii U for $29.99 as well. NES Remix 1 and 2 can still be purchased on the Wii U eShop for $14.99 each.

I already bought both Remixes, so I'm not too sure about how much I want to get this game. I do want the Famicom 3DS theme and Speed Mario Bros, a sped-up SMB Hack built into the game, but I'm not sure if the price is worth it. However, there are now online leader boards and daily online challenges, as well as Famicom Remix mode. It would be nice if Club Nintendo would give you some kind of gift for buying all these NES Remix games. Once again, Nintendo got me purchasing classic games I already own.  :P

Not really since there's not games I'm interested and the title's pretty lackluster but then again it's the same company who named the 3DS Yoshi game as "Yoshi's New Island" and "Pokémon X/Y" which were probably placeholder titles though turned into permanent.
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS! Nintendo 3DS!
Post by: nintendodork on November 07, 2014, 01:32:26 am
I haven't heard great things about Yoshi's New Island. Haven't played it for myself though.

I can speak for X/Y, Super Smash Bros 3DS, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Mario Kart 7, Kirby's Triple Deluxe, and Mario Golf World Tour all being great, though. World Tour is my favorite Mario Golf game by a pretty wide margin. X/Y are great, too. I'm very excited for Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire to come out toward the end of this month (another reason to invest in a 3DS).

On the topic of NES Remix, I really hope there's quite a bit more content than what was shown in the Direct. Definitely did not expect that game to be $30 or even be released physically for that matter.

Can we talk about the New 3DS XL? And the fact that we don't have a choice between that and the smaller one? I want the new system so bad but I don't like either of the colors that will be available. :(
Title: Re: Nintendo 3DS! Nintendo 3DS!

I'm not sure I have much to add besides a "me too", but, yeah, it sucks that they aren't releasing the smaller New 3DS in NA.

I mean, I get that the 3DS XL units probably sold a lot better than the smaller 3DS's, but I'm surprised they've decided not to go the route of charging $10+ for interchangeable face plates.  That's got to be easy money.

I completely agree on the bad color choices of the two New 3DS XL models we're getting.  Even if I were seriously looking to get one (I'm not, actually) I would wait until they release it in different colors.

Same here, I'm waiting until a new bundle or color is released. I tried out the new XL at Best Buy the other day. You can move the 3DS all around without getting blurry 3D. However, I noticed that the Majora's Mask demo that was playing didn't look that deep 3D-wise, compared to Ocarina of Time, which I consider to be the 3DS's most 3D game. Try Ocarina on full-blast 3D and you'll know what I'm talking about, the 3D is extreme and looks incredibly deep.

Too confusing, even more confusing than the 'New'. At least the next Nintendo handheld is definitely going to be named something new, unless they just call it 4DS.

When Nintendo chooses to release the 4DS, it will bring Hell to Earth.

I'm going to get a New 3DSXL at launch because my current Animal Crossing 3DSXL has a sticky circle pad and a loose AC adapter port. I have to position the cord on the charger a certain way for it to make a connection to my 3DS. Really blows. I don't want to send it in to Nintendo because I'm afraid they'll just swap it out for a regular one and I really like the design of my Animal Crossing one.

Also, to remedy the color situation of the New 3DSXL, I've decided that I'm either going to get a custom paint job or this: https://www.etsy.com/listing/212513548/wario-super-mario-nintendo-3ds-xl-decal?ref=shop_home_active_1&ga_search_query=mario

I don't have a massive problem with that, it's the same scenario here.  I'd rather that than every one sold it £10 more and I end up with extra chargers.

I'm probably so allergic to it since I worked retail for a bit.

In my experience, gamers probably aren't too bothered by this sort of thing, but parents are.  I had many get pissed when I suggested they buy a PS2 memory card or a second controller when they'd buy the system with games that needed memory cards or were two player. They just want everything in one box at one price.

It may be different in this case if the parents already have a charger from a previous model, but that becomes a fun guessing game of "what handheld console do you really have at home?" ;D

It's perfectly understandable that they get angry. They thought they had everything that's needed when they suddenly realize that they have to buy all this extra stuff to even start playing (NES at least came with two controllers). Stores should be able to get around this problem by offering bundles with extra controllers, memory card and the case with 3DS AC-adapters with the main console unit.

For gamers it mostly benefits though (unless Nintendo is charging extra for the AC-adapter) since we often already have the necessary parts, and if we don't we are probably already aware that we need to buy it. When importing a 3DS LL from Japan I'm only thankful that I get a bit cheaper shipping price, and I still need to buy a Swedish AC-adapter for it anyway.

Picked a New 3DS LL the other night.  Thanks to my two favorite words in the Japanese language, "Hako Itami", it was crazy cheap.

Love this thing!  I can actually PLAY it, even with my freakishly long fingers.

I've been going through my (meager) 3DS collection and REALLY enjoying these games as they were meant to be played.

And, of course, Virtual Console titles look and play *great* as well!

anybody hear about this?

maybe after this they'll finally release the normal size n3ds here in america

The XL version probably feels nicer in the hands, but it just doesnt compare to the itty bitty one stylistically (in my opinion  ::) )

Interesting! I don't like to loose eShop and such though.

I was fed up with the large size of my 3DS (and the slow load times), so I decided to milk two tits at once: I bought a regular-sized New 3DS.

I'm already happy with it. ;D Now here's the problem: I need to buy a screen protector, but all I see are the XL size. I've been pretty satisfied with the Hori brand, and due to recent fraudulent activity issues, I only use PayPal.

That only leaves me with this one from China, which I'm hesitant to buy: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-HORI-Tempered-Glass-Film-Screen-Protector-For-NEW-Nintendo-3DS-/131488450890?hash=item1e9d52894a:g:eBoAAOSw5dNWhfLS

Edit: I found my unused DSi screen protectors, and one of them works for the bottom screen. So I just need one for the top screen.
