Yes. The AV will probably cost more than the original, so be prepared to shell out some cash on top of the Famicom.

that's like asking if you should trade two slices f bread for a deluxe sandwich with your favorite toppings.

Of course you should!

Anyone have a list of what the AV Famicom can't do that the original Famicom can?

The only thing I can think off the top of my head is mic, but that isn't a big deal.  Neither is the 4-player adaptor because the US one works on the AV if I recall correctly.

the AV doesn't look as nice.  I'd actually reccommend an AV mod, personally.  I hate those dogbone controllers too, they look awful and feel odd...

Correct, a FourScore works on an AV Famicom.

I use NES controllers on my AV Famicom when I don't feel like using the dogbones. As for the AV, my AV modded Famicom is definitely not as good as my AV Famicom in terms of picture quality.

With my setup, you get the best of both worlds IMO.  I've got an (good quality) AV modded Famicom.  It's still got the extra FDS sound intact and everything.  Then I've also got an adapter that lets you use any NES controller/peripheral on the Famicom.

I agree with what everyone has said:  the AV Famicom is a million times better in terms of functionality (except for the Microphone - so you won't be able to play that Beat Takeshi game on it!).

I have 4 Famicom consoles, one AV and three original ones (one of which is a square-button).  Despite the fact that I use my AV Famicom for most of my gaming (the old school Famicoms are only used on a second TV in my kitchen), I couldn't bare to part with my original Famicom (well, not all of them anyway).

Instead of trading, why not just go and buy an AV Famicom or trade something else for it?  The one thing the old Famicom has going for it is that it looks unique.  The AV Famicom is boring grey and looks almost identical to the North American top-loader.  The old Famicom though has that "I'm old-school, 1983 authentic" look to it, which I find really cool.

But if having that retro-cool looking thing next to your TV isn't important, then yeah, try to get   an AV Famicom for it!!

Not everyone thinks the FC looks better in design:

I actually like the gray design, but oh well. :-\

I remember absolutely hating the look of the famicom when I was really young surfing NES shrine sites on my grandpa's 52k connection. Now I've grown to accept it, but I still prefer the gray box that is the NES.

I guess it's all about where you come from.  I bet Japanese people don't like the look of the NES.

I see it in the same light as a Delorean - futuristic.

If only it were made out of stainless steel... hmm... ::)

And my perception of the FC was skewed by only seeing yellowed-up ones!.Yeck! :-X
