Title: Starfox 2/ starwing competition questions...
Post by: petik1 on July 22, 2010, 08:58:34 am
Hiya i got a few questions that maybe some of you can answer.

I want to make a starfox 2 cart. The game was made to run on the super fx 2 chip which runs at 21 mhz. The near perfect donor cart is Stunt race fx, but that has the original sfx chip which is 21 mhz, but is then divided to 10.5 mhz. Can i replace the  Resonator in the cart with a crystal quartz thats around 42 mhz to make up for the division without any instability issues or overheating? Also, if i go over the aimed 42 mhz, say 48, what should i expect in-game that is altered?

On to starwing. I live in america so i have an ntsc snes. If i took the mask rom out of the cart and replaced it with an eeprom with a starwing competition rom on it, will the game run in 50 hz or 60? Thanks in advance!

I'm not clued up like Joe and 133Mhz, but I always understood the frame rate to be the machine itself and not the cart, right?

I have a 50hz famicom and a 60hz Famicom - any game inserted into that at least will run at either speed, depending on which console I use.

Hmm but remember that the sfx chip is a coprocessor, and a powerful one. And some one on the ben heck forum already did this, but only with a 24 mhz crystal quartz. So theroetically it is possible as long  as the chip can handle it. And a 50 hz famicom? Modified or hk version?

Your best bet is to make a donor out of Winter Gold FX since it has the FX 2 and the game runs 100%.. I don't personally condone or encourage the practice of making donors though.

Why not, it's what Winter Gold FX would have wanted... :P

what  ever i find cheaper and easier, ill get it. If anyone can confirm that 42-48 mhz is safe for the sfx1 and the game will not he effected by the extra 3 mhz it will get... And what do you have against donor carts? :P

I just don't like the idea of using donors.

I did not read through everything so there may be errors with my quoting of important notes.

This is the best I can find on the subject:
http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=22&threadid=15422
http://nesdev.parodius.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=5633&sid=63a058452ecc33942153cf03b23efc68

"GSU-1 (not 2) is the one you need for Starfox 2. The translated and bugfixed version of the game is actually prone to frequent crashing when run on the GSU-2, so beware."

"Also, make sure there's enough SRAM on the "donor" PCB! (When building Starfox 2 out of a Stunt Race FX cart"

You could also use Doom since it's cheaper.

Ive never heard of someone suggesting using sfx1. According to http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fusebu.forumactif.net%2Ffiches-techniques-f14%2Ftuto-starfox-2-beta-t1253.htm&sl=fr&tl=en&hl=EN&ie=UTF-8 (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fusebu.forumactif.net%2Ffiches-techniques-f14%2Ftuto-starfox-2-beta-t1253.htm&sl=fr&tl=en&hl=EN&ie=UTF-8) the game was built around the sfx2.
And yeah i could use doom, but then i have a red cart...

Again, I only took a quick glance at the articles. Not if you take the PCB board out and switch it with PGA Tour or some crap game that has expansion slots and is grey.

Yeah but funds are low if ya now what i mean and i want all of my projects to be as cost effective as possible.  buying a cart,  an eeprom, and an oscillator, on top of burning the eeprom, desoldering the mask rom, soldering the wires to the eeprom, and soldering on the oscillator is enough already. Not to mention what i want to do with starwing AND printing labels that are as close to the original as possible. God, video games can be stressful  ;D i wonder what 133mhz thinks of the topic

All I said is that if you don't want a red cart, just take the PCB out and put it in a cart that has the two expansion slots. What does "I wonder what 133mhz" mean? I don't know shit? who cares what he thinks? I know more than him, trust me. WTF?!? This is so aggravating. These posts are the reason why I'm so reluctant to help people. It's obvious you were not prepared to do this in the first place.

Sorry i just didnt want to go through the hassle of buying another cart either online and waiting, or buying one at my overpriced used game store. What i meamt by " i wonder what 133 mhz thinks of this topic" was, well, what he thought... I never said you didnt know anything nor did i think it. I am ready for this. Its not that hard. Im sorry if i offended you in any way but, please im not here to argue or frustrate, i just needed some advice. Im sorry if i ever came off as stupid, im only 14, im not a pro at this like i assume you are.

Well nenson, you did say that you may have errors, so by asking 133 he's probably got more confirmed information than you.  Don't take it so personally.

I was reading in to it a while back, and iirc DooM is a good donor cart.

There are a few carts which would make suitable donors, but im aiming to make it as close to what the finished prodect wouldve looked like. Doom has no battery= saves
