Title: FS: Side Opening Famicom Disk System box/foam
Post by: Epic_Lotus on September 09, 2010, 08:02:46 pm
I think these are still pretty rare to come by.  It's the same one found here:
http://famicomworld.com/workshop/articles/side-opening-disk-system-box/

I'm asking $90 OBO + shipping.  It's just the box and 2-part styrofoam, no system/paperwork/cords/etc.  Condition is pretty good.  No big chunks missing from the foam, only minor wear/aging to the box.  Please see the pictures for details, and don't hesitate to ask any questions!

I don't mind shipping internationally at all, but I only ship Express Mail (EMS) because it's the only one that has tracking available.

Good luck on the sale.
I've never seen a side opening box in the wild here in Japan. I only have the cheapo version.  :-\

Other than the side flap are there any differences in the packaging?

Unfortunately, I don't have a regular FDS box to compare it to.  Here's what I do know off the top of my head:

1) It has side flaps the regular one doesn't
2) It has a bottom
3) The foam is 2-pieces (top and bottom) whereas the regular one is just a bottom
4) The regular FDS box has diagonal creases on both of the long sides coming into the middle from the face side of the box down to the open edge.

So the differences are definitely cosmetic for the most part.  Personally, I think this one looks a lot better, and it's much easier to display than the regular one because, you know, the box has 4 sides and you can stand it on the long side much easier.

My regular one has 2 pieces of styrofoam.

^Hah, well that's funny because the FW page about the system says that the later release didn't need the top piece of foam.  I wish I could remember if the regular one I used to own had one piece of foam or two.  Anywho, I was just going off what that page listed.  If the later release indeed normally contains two pieces, you can strike that one off my list :).

It's like this:

I double-checked... and I was mistaken: There may be slight artwork differences, but the only thing missing is the silver panel on the bottom...It's probably the first 500,000 units or so that came in this packaging. (I think it stopped at power board Rev 2A.) I'll have to check my serial number registry to assist in confirmation.

Maybe I can shoot more photos of it... Mine (AFAIR) is complete with the manual and paperwork.

^Hey, looks like my box is an upgrade to the one you've got.  You should make an offer on mine ;).

I'll think about it, but I need the following more:

Controller for Sharp C1 (either colour, any condition)
Box for Sharp AN-500
Box for Sharp AN-505
Box for AN-510
Box for Sharp 14CC1F/R
Box for Square-Button Famicom

Best of luck on finding a square-button box.  I got mine from Eric of japan-games.com for a very reasonable price, but they're pretty hard to find he said.  I'm guessing your best bet will be to just buy a CIB and resell whichever system you don't want to keep.

Also, I hate piecing together CIB's.  Even if it costs me a little bit more, I always prefer to just get everything at the same time rather than worrying about finding the other parts later.  Less stress > $$ saved, to a point.

tell me about it. I have been having nothing but trouble finding a regular non-square buttom Famicom box.

This is still up for grabs.  I've actually got a matching unit to go with it, if anyone's interested.  I'd be looking for $135 + ship for the complete one.
