Title: Super Mario Collection Special Pack (Wii)
Post by: manuel on October 20, 2010, 11:10:22 pm
Basically it's just Mario All-Stars for the Wii. 4 games plus a small booklet and a soundtrack CD.
I'm pretty sure something similar will be released in the USA, too.
I might also get an imported version only for the booklet showing the NES instead of the Famicom.

Here are some pics:

Why can't they release something obscure, like the arcade version? Or the Hudson version? :P

Maybe Hudson will? After Nintendo goes bankrupt? :-X

Something obscure like that would sell millions.  ;D

Nice packaging, but kinda lame that the game is just All-Stars.  Let's celebrate 25 years by doing exactly what we did 17 years ago :P

When I registered the game at Club Nintendo I entered a message saying it's very unfortunate that they didn't include Mario World and Yoshi's Island.
Heck, I'm sure they could afford putting Mario 64 and Sunshine on the disc, too. That's what I'd call a Mario Collection...

No mention about the SMC :-\

I'm noticing that Nintendo is more or less only good at churning out remakes and milking their dynasty titles. This is nothing new to me.

I was wondering why they haven't released Super Mario All Stars for the Virtual Console yet.

The special pack is probably the reason.
AND they probably want you to buy the 4 games separately if you want them on the VC.  :-\

The game itself does seem to be a disappointment. However, I think the main attraction of this collection is the cd and the history book. As for the wii/dsi bundles. My fiance and I would probably get the wii bundle, I don't need another dsi xl.

Now Manuel, what do you think of the history book and the cd that comes in the collection? I read somewhere that the book is supposed to contain sketches drawn by Miyamoto himself, is that the case?

If it does come out here, I'd get it even if it's just All Stars because of the other stuff.

The booklet is very nice, but much too small and short.
It does contain several drawings and sketches. I would love to scan it for you guys, but I don't want to bend the pages (sorry).
If there's interest I could take more photos of the single pages.

The CD is nice. Not great, but nice. 10 songs from 10 Mario games and 10 sound effects from SMB. They could easily have fit 20 songs on it...

For fans it's definitely recommended.

Very nice package except with the games, I mean how many times are we going to see these? Wouldn't it be kewl to get some beta mario levels that have never been seen! Now, that would make me want to buy it even more.....

So now the only thing going for the collection pack for me is that book.

I read somewhere that the console came with a preinstalled version of super Mario Bros. , but with "25" on all of the item boxes. Is this true?

EDIT: Never mind, pictures of it are here: http://wii.nintendolife.com/news/2010/10/japan_receives_red_wii_in_honour_of_marios_25th (http://wii.nintendolife.com/news/2010/10/japan_receives_red_wii_in_honour_of_marios_25th)

To celebrate Super Mario's anniversary (or something like it) they released SM games from NES/SNES for Wii and in red (game box in red and Wii in red), but the thing is...

Wii isn't even an HD console and they should have kept this for the day to remaster in HD when they'd release a capable console of having HD graphics.

If Super Mario Bros was in HD that'd be a definitive buy, but Wii's in SD not HD.

Here's the link from one of the ads: http://www.qj.net/qjnet/news/special-red-wii-and-dsi-xl-heading-to-uk.html

You mind as well just hack an Xbox and play the emulators off it because it's cheap and an excellent gaming/media centre.

Wait, didn't you just complain about graphics not being important in the 3DS thread?  Now you're saying an HD remake of SMB would be a "definite buy", even though it'd be the exact same game?

That's different. ;D

In this case they have absolutely no improvements and they're just dropping them in without any upgrades, as in if it was in HD that would be much better.

It's the exact game but in 1080p the graphics would be smoother and better on an HDTV.

I play NES (Burai Fighter) on my Full HDTV LG 34" and looks pretty good, I imagined the image would be horrible but that wasn't the case. PS2 looks awful on an HDTV but not an NES? That's weird.

It's really unfair it had no improvements at all, I'm really disappointed with Nintendo. Maybe next console-gen I'll get to see Super Mario Bros (NES) remastered in Full HD (1080p).

Graphics don't matter generally, but since they're re-releasing it matters.

It probably has more to do with your specific type of HDTV.

What kind of TV is your HDTV? LCD, plasma, DLP...? 60Hz, 120Hz, 240Hz?

It's an HDTV FullHD LCD 60Hz, I f#cking love playing games on it, especially GTA IV (Brucie is always worked up, lol)!

But about Super Mario that's all I have to say, better luck next time, Nintendo!

I'm surprised the slow refresh rate and resultant choppy images don't bother you with an LCD. They drive me nuts, but a lot of people don't notice it.

Well, it's been confirmed for the US and I'm glad. I can't say that I'm impressed with the tracklisting on the soundtrack, but I'm glad Nintendo actually is releasing something old in the exact way it was intended (why they don't do this with Star Fox 2, but as a SNES cart I don't know). I don't have money otherwise I'd get a copy, maybe two.

Because Nintendo has never done that for any game.  On any system.  Ever.

Cool that it's coming out in the U.S though!

After reading through many Iwata Asks and poking around Mario's 25th anniversary website in japanese and english, I found something interesting about 2 of the bundles.

The Wii bundle, I was first in line at my Gamestop to get one... woohoo. My brother had his wii, so my fiance and I got this one so we have it when we eventually have our own place. It's very nice and shiny and junk. I give a pretty good review on Amazon for it, I'm Robert Ernst there. One complaint that I have though is that the special version of Mario with "25" blocks is not on it.... still a great bundle for first wii owners.

The All Stars pack, I will be getting it for xmas thanks to my brother. We all know the game is just an SNES port. I do like the idea of getting this cd even if the track list is not all that great, but consider this. The tracks on this cd were all picked by Koji Kondo, in the Iwata Ask interview for the game, Iwata called it "Best of Koji Kondo"... with respect to Mario of course. The book seems great too, art sketches and interviews galore.

I pre-ordered mine of Amazon. For 29 bucks you can't complain even if Nintendo should have done better in honor of Super Mario's 25+ years of gaming..  ::)

Apparently the European bundle comes with Donkey Kong.  What's cool, though, is that they added the missing "cement factory" level that was not in the original release (but was in the arcade version)!

It may have been a prototype version, considering the fact that Nintendo isn't likely to have people who know 6502 nowadays to add the missing level...

Now that would be really cool, a new retrostyled 16-bit LoZ but I sorta doubt Nintendo would surprise us with such a nice idea. Of course I could be wrong since they made a new retrostyled 8-bit Megaman recently for Wii.

The 6th one was published by Nintendo; which I'm still a bit surprised by.

Capcom didn't care to release it; so if Nintendo didn't go out of their way to do it, we could've been in the same boat as Final Fantasy! :o

Wow.  For $80 I'd just go buy an SNES and Mario All-Stars.

I just got the collection in the mail, but I'm not sure if I want to open it. I do want Club Nintendo coins.

I say good idea to keep it sealed. It will surely be worth something in the future and you do buy other Nintendo stuff so you'll get your coins back :)

I opened it, registered it for 60 coins (only 240 away from G&W Collection 2, how sad).

I enjoyed the soundtrack with mixed-reviews, which is a euphemism for absolute shite! The soundtrack was the most disappointing deal of the package, but other than that, it's good to see Nintendo recognise the Super NES/Super Famicom, and that's all I cared to support. :) :) :) and having SMAS for the Wii FTW!

I dumped the Wii ISO only to find that there is much more to it than the SMAS game (the internal filename reads "super mario collection", which is interesting enough to say the least

Super Mario Collection is the Japanese title of the game.

Apart from that what is special about the ISO? Some hidden content maybe?

yes, and that's why I found it interesting; the SNES ROM internal filename for Super Mario All-Stars is not Super Mario Collection, so someone goofed up something on the Wii version. I wonder if the PAL Super Mario All-Stars has "super mario collection" as it's internal filename.

I checked and can't find anything in terms of "hidden" just the rom, it's relative emulation files and the savefile information file.

I'm begening to hate people on ebay..

I seriouly think resellers buy up most of the Stock at Stores and sell it & ebay...so people could bid like stupid poeple & start jacking up te price..

Don't get me started on BIN prices

I hate it when I get a re-sealed game labeled as "NEW NEVER OPENED"

I don't understand the point of paying more for sealed games. I mean, I bought a sealed coke this morning and no one gives a shit. As long as the box, game, and manuals are all in good condition, I don't see the difference besides the fact that no one touched the sealed one
