Title: Sun eclipse today...are you watching?
Post by: jpx72 on January 04, 2011, 12:25:06 am
Thousands of floppy disks destroyed today as another sun eclipse hits Europe...
;D yeah, me too, can't find my sun-filter glasses so one old floppy had to go.
Adding a floppy-disk-filtered photos for your pleasure (if you cannot see the event from your home).

You know that using a floppy disk for looking into the sun is not very good for your eyes?
... That being said, for my last solar eclipse I looked through a CD-R.  :P

I don't get it. Why would you use a floppy disk to see a solar eclipse?

You look through the disk media (disk itself) to view the eclipse, since looking at it without a filter can cause damage to your eye.

People use floppy disks to look into the sun? :P That's pretty weird and it sounds quite dangerous for not only your eyes since it's just a thin magnetic film, but to the disk itself. ::)

Hmm...I've always thought of solar eclipses as dark thinks, like your eye would be fine to look at it.

Well, once the sun is completely covered you can look at it of course, but until then and afterward it's very bad for your eyes.

Yesterday's solar eclipse was only partial, and those photos in the first topic were made when the eclipse was at it's maximum.
What the looking into the sun concerns, the first rays of sun after the total (100%) solar eclipse are very dangerous so I don't recommend looking at the black sun without proper filter for too long!
