Title: Famicom disk system: super mario bros glitch help? + cleaning FDS RAM plug?
Post by: supermetriodbros on January 08, 2011, 11:36:42 am
Hi i have a problem with my new Famicom Disk System i got today from Japan.
Before that, i got a copy of super mario bros for the disk system
so when i plug in the RAM adapter and put the disk in, i see mario's head with a messed up tile thing. Also, the mushroom is weird too because the left half of it is the '40' and '60' numbers you get when you touch the flagpole at the end of the level. I looked at the RAM Adptr. and see some yellow stuff on the pins. I could easily clean it off, but i wonder how. And i know there's nothing wrong with my FDS cause a copy of Metroid that came with it was working  :)
Also, the tile glitch occurs in goombas too, and as i progress i'll probably find more messed up tiles.
So if you know how to deal with glitches, help!!!!
That gives me two Q's.

1. How do you (if you can) clean the Famicom Disk System RAM Adapter?
2. How do you fix tile glitches on disks?

Thx in advance. :) ~~~SuperMetroidBros

1. Use alcohol and q tips.
2. Do step 1.
3 If step 1 doesn't work, you might have a bad disk.

If the pins are especially dirty, take apart the RAM adapter and clean the pins with a pink eraser. It'll do a world of good and it's easier and faster than using qtips and rubbing alcohol.

ok... i'll try both today. (i saw the Qtips method in some video but wasn't sure if RAM Adpt. needed special cleaning)
I've also seen the pink eraser work awesomely on SNES games

Windex would do the trick. You can also use warm water, but I WOULD NOT recommend it. Basically any cleaning liquid would do it.

Absolutely DO NOT use Windex! It contains ammonia and ammonia is highly corrosive to metals.

I think isopropyl alcohol is really the only solution you can use that isn't harmful in any way to your games.  I would recommend just going out and buying more.  It's easy to find and not expensive.

Vodka would work, too, but unless you're old enough it'll probably easier for you to get your hands on some rubbing alcohol.  :D

hahahah. I've used scotch before. :)

Don't do anything to the disk. That's...priceless!
I'd consider swapping it for a working one if you ever need to go that route. 8)

Make sure that you clean your cart slot too. Are you using a genuine Famicom?

I'm using a genuine Famicom. I'll try cleaning my cart slot, but how?

Thin cardboard like from a cereal box, make sure to fold it over itself with the non art side, then cut it to the width of a the slot.

I was searching google, and I came across this thread.  It sounds like my problem exactly.  Let me give you a rundown.

I have a fully working famicom twin.  All disks I have run perfectly.

I was fixing a belt on a separate famicom disk to get it working again, so I am using the cartridge slot on the famicom twin.

Got the belt fixed, everything seemed to run perfect, but alas, I am getting the same exact graphical glitches on mario.  only mario, goombas, and mushrooms are effected.  These do not occur on my twin.

Not only Mario 1, but also Mario 2, the exact same graphical glitch.  Metroid also runs perfectly for me, as do most games.  Zanac and kaettekita mario were also giving me slight graphical problems.

It is not the ram adapter.  My disk system I was replacing the belt on was basically new old stock and is perfect cosmetically.

Does anyone have any clue as to what this problem could be?? It's very bizarre.  Help!

hey gatsu25, i can recall that there was something fishy with RAM chip inside of FDS ram adaptor. Let me find it.

so, here it goes:

1) http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=9232.0
2) http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=10607 looks like we have a recipe after a long investigation. http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=10607.msg153257#msg153257

please consider reading these whole threads prior doing anything at your own risk.

good luck. (it the recipe worked for you, feel free to add your feedback. Perhaps, someday there will be a sticky thread with the recipe)

Thank you for the great answer!  I will probably just go ahead and try and find a different ram adapter.  Honestly though, I will be using this with an Analog NT, so I might wait and see if it runs correctly with that first.

Yep I was the OP on one of those threads and the solution ended up being a different RAM adaptor. It's a crappy problem to have since it's not exactly easy to find extra RAM adaptors floating around - I ended up going through two duds before I managed to find one that wasn't glitchy.

Another suggested solution was to replace the faulty RAM chips.

If I recall correctly, I think we tried to replace the RAM chip but didn't succeed.

Did have success with resistors though.

Also worth noting that the problem only occurs on SOME famicom consoles. Namely late models. A very tricky problem thus.

However, I would guess that at least half of RAM adapters are faulty and RAM adapters aren't that cheap. So buying new RAM adapters is not my recommended solution.
