Title: About the Pocket Monsters games
Post by: FamicomRetroGamer on January 18, 2011, 09:53:58 am
I'm a fan of the original Pocket Monsters series, movies and games (by Satoshi Tajiri).

But I don't like the continuation that it has because it just seems repetitive and not worth watching.

About the DS games, they're following the recent series and not the original?

I'm disappointed that the international version of Pocket Monsters didn't use the official names of the characters.

English > Kapanese

Ash > Satoshi
Misty > Kasumi
Brock > Takeshi
Charmender > Hitokage
Bulbasaur > Fushigidane
Squirtle > Zenigame

Pikachu's name remained intact, but in a few countries its voice was modified (by their own dubbers).

Consider Pokemon's intended audience though.  All they're doing is making it more accessible to American children. They were considering the fact that kids would rather have shorter, more English names that are easier to remember than the Japanese ones.

most of the best games ever made are repetitive. think about it.

Pac Man has you collecting dots and eating ghosts over and over.
The Legend of Zelda has you exploring dungeons collecting keys to unlock doors and gaining new items over and over.
Super Mario Bros has you moving from the right jumping on mushrooms and turtles over and over.
Tetris has you forming rows of shaped blocks that endlessly fall. You are forever doing the same thing over and over.

Pokemon is only as repetitive as any other gaming series. With each new set of games there are slight improvements. I imported Black and played it all the way through in Japanese. It's a more advanced game than the prior DS games were, even HeartGold and SoulSilver.

but some games metioned (*cough*zelda*cough*) mostly have a differant story MOST OF THE TIME, i agree that pokemon/pocket monsters have a slightly differant story everytime but think about the differantness of majoras mask apposed to ocarina of time

I believe you brought this argument up before, FRG, and to use LP's example, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask do have different storylines, but underneath that, they're basically the exact same thing. Pokemon also has a different storyline in each generation.

I was talking about the TV series itself, what Satoshi does is just battle and catch new Pokémons.

I'm just watching the original TV series Pocket Monsters and when it ends, it's over.

Still, I've asked around and the games that follows the series.

Uncharted can be kinda repetitive but it's cool.

Well, if it's popular, they'll continue to make new episodes of it. Granted, it's not as popular as it was in the 90s/early 00s, but it still brings in ratings.

i know that, OoT and MM are similar but all the pokemon games seem to be TOO similar: get a starter, defeat the gyms/elite four,  complete pokedex, get natdex and repeat

though im pretty sure catching legendarys is involved somewhere in there

Playing Pokemon for the story is like playing Dead or Alive as one of the guys. You're doing it wrong.

I like it.

Watched the series, complete the game.

I watched the whole first season of Pokemon some months ago, I pretty much dragged myself through it. Unfortunately you find with all shows with a main plot, the main plot itself doesn't evolve too often and instead you get lots of filler episodes with stuff happening that has no effect on the grand scheme of the story. Like the episode with everybody being attacked by that Primate or whatever it's called. Talk about filler that goes nowhere.

I don't really intend to ever watch past the first season, and never have. The show probably drags forever still, though you can't expect better. I'm already getting annoyed with Alf, he never goes outside or they never have him meet new people. WTF let Alf have a life you goddamn Tanners!!
