Title: Challenge me with your awesome games!
Post by: tappybot on February 14, 2011, 04:34:24 am
(http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l9xy0yjpqM1qzj5ggo1_500.jpg)

Some of you may have noticed that I've been living in Japan and by my boastings, have acquired a large collection.
To date I have some 530 or so unique games (most loose carts) on Famicom and Famicom Disk System, though I only have about a dozen or so FDS games (and no FDS yet)

Unfortunately, with my contract ending in March, I'll be leaving Japan, along with the incredible ease and joy of treasure hunting for all this glorious loot.

To get to the point, I need you, the greatest Famicom centered community the internet over, to challenge me with the best games of which you can think!  I've browsed the recommendation threads a few times and mostly have those covered..  But the nature of those threads are that the same best games keep popping up.  I want to know everything you think is great..  Even if it's the most obscure or unexpected choice.

Throw me a challenge and help me round off my collection before I leave this bountiful land.

I have my own little list of what I still need, but I'd really like to see yours  :o

(Not my photo, just wanted a pic of games)

What about mapper MMC5 games? It was the most inteligent mapper made and only a handfull of games use it. One of those is the biggest famicom game Metal Slader Glory, and others, well look at my collection:

(still missing "Just Breed" though)

Great!  I'm memorizing the the Metal Slader Glory and Gunsight cartridges now.  I have Just Breed and a couple of those Koei games.  Love those carts by the way...  They remind me of compact NES cartridges.  :D

Edit:  Wait, Space Defending Force sounds awesome... That one too.  ;D

:help:

Anyone else?   Of course.. I need everyone else!   Not necessarily just obscure titles either.  I'm just looking to hear about games you think are good, whether those titles are often acknowledged or not.

I'm going downtown to Nagoya again, this Sunday. Hoping you guys can coalesce a list for that shopping trip.  Let's see what you got!   :mario:

Seek out Langrange Point for sure. In fact, all Konami Famicom games are rather beautiful with the end labels. I'd also recommend tracking down Takahashi Meijin no Bōken Jima IV, the final commerically released Famicom game.

I own Lagrange Point, but I'd love to get Adventure Island 4.

Sweet, I'll definitely be seeking that one out too.   Yeah, you really can't go wrong with Konami games either.. Even the bad ones have awesome music, or some other redeeming factor.

As for Adventure Island IV, it's now on my list, too.  That one I don't believe I've ever played in all my years.  Thank you!

So what happened? Did you find a bunch of good games?

Didn't find any of the ones suggested here in my last trip, but I'm going again this weekend since I got a 3000yen coupon for this one shop.

Before I leave Japan, I'm going to check out this incredibly awesome store 'Retro Game Revival' in Osaka, one more time.. So that will be my last hurrah.

I've been posting all my Finds in the 'Other Gaming' > Finds Others Thread.. Check it out.. Got some great stuff on Sunday, including a 35 dollar Color TV Game 15.  :star:

BTW, if you guys have any games on your mind you think are good.. please post it in here!  I want to make sure I can round up all the best games before I leave, and nothing can beat the collective opinion of a bunch of famicom obsessed nerds.   ;)

You do have Crisis Force right? Get it if not!
Some other interresting games - Bird Week (hehe), Salamander, ... oh that's it. :)

Yes sir, I got those,  thanks for the recommendations.   Yeah, I bet Bird Week is interesting..  I heard it was a horrible, horrible game. But it was also a cheapie, so I had to pick it up.   :blinky:

Have only touched a fraction of the games so far... When I go back, I'm going to dig through the entire collection and give even Bird Week its fair shake.

One thing I would suggest if you think you might need cash down the road is to pick up a few games if you see them cheap that are worth a decent amount in the states (especially CIB): Mother, Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti, Holy Diver, Joy Mech Fight, Samurai Pizza Cats, Sweet Home (if it's CIB), Rockman Board Game (whatever it's called), etc etc.

Anyway, now for my recommendations for your collection. These are going to be mostly RPGs, so fair warning.

Wizardy Legacy of Llegyman (sp?) - This is actually playable in English through an option in the Options menu
Akuma-kun Makai no Wana
Esper Dream 2
Getsu Fuumaden
Ginga no Sanin
Majin Eiyuuden Wataru Gaiden
Metal Max
Madara
Otaku no Seiza (tho if you own a PC Engine CD I'd suggest getting the remake instead)
Shadow Brain
Zombie Hunter
Moon Crystal
Nagagutsu o Haita Neko: Sekai Isshuu 80 Nichi Dai Bouken - Sequel to Puss N Boots
Hello Kitty World - This game is awesome, do not be afraid. LOL
Kero Kero Keroppi no Daibouken
Tetsuwan Atom
Wai Wai World
Yokai Club

Thanks for the recommendations Mobiusclimber.  :star:

Never knew Wizardy had the English option.. Nice!

Have most of those, except Metal Max, Hello Kitty World, Otaku no Seiza, Shadow Brain, and Moon Crystal

Have not seen Moon Crystal even once so far  :-\ and I really want it.    Now I got a few more games to add to my 'need to buy' list.

update:

Just found Hello Kitty World and Otaku no Seiza for real cheap.  :mario:

Sweet! I think you'll really enjoy Hello Kitty World. I don't like platformers too much but that's one I really had fun with (I also love Kirby's Adventure so there you go).

I'll mention some games I bought myself recently. They are a bit rare and could be expensive.

Chiki Chiki Machine
Salad No Kuni Tomato
Pyokotan no Dai Meiro

and I played these game today and thought they were good:
dragon spirit
Higemaru Makaijima: Nanatsu no Shima Daibouken

I played Getsu Fuuma Den recently too (suggested above) and loved it at first, but it got so boring when getting to the cave...  :-\

by the way, regarding the suggestion to buy CIB famicom games. Aren't they quite expensive in Japan too?

Thanks fred!

I forgot about Wacky Races (ChikiChiki Machine) I had even seen it in the store once.

Also, Pyokotan no Dai Meiro I had just seen for the first time two weeks ago and I still don't have it yet. Got the others.

Definitey adding these two to my must by list.

CIB famicom games are only expensive if they're rare.  Well, they certainly aren't cheap, but you can often get them for less then 10 dollars, but again, the better and rarer games CIB can sky rocket in price, but it also depends on the store selling it.
