Title: Superguns
Post by: nintendodork on February 23, 2011, 08:46:39 pm
Does anyone here happen to have any interest in or are building Superguns?  I'd love to buy one from somewhere, but the only places I can actually see them for sale are eBay and "Neotropolis", both of which are highly priced, and are asking for much more than they're worth.

If you don't know what a Supergun is, check out the Wikipedia article. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuperGun)

Hmm from what I saw on the web - a supergun is "only" a device which converts RGB signals from JAMMA boards to something that can be plugged to TV (and also provides other JAMMA-to-OTHER CONNECTOR rewiring, so rewire-only box). Nothing fancy, most of them don't even have PSU built in, so the whole setup with PSU, Supergun, Jamma board and possible other accessories like joypads or light guns will look very messy.
I suggest that you build it yourself. Maybe it won't be so fancy, but it will work the same.
Here's a JAMMA pinout:

I don't have the technological know-how to do so. If I could, I would.  A proper Supergun, once fully built, only has the JAMMA connector sticking out of it (and of course the controller ports and such).  All of the other stuff, including the PSU, is already in the Supergun.

Well if you need to buy the one with a PSU built in (the most expensive part of the whole supergun, an ordinary PC PSU can be used perfectly), I would price it (if I had to build it using some cheap PSU) around 50$ (depends how expensive are JAMMA and controller ports). But for that price, it would be ugly :D A nice one (in a fancy box) is probably worth up to 100$. There's a lot of work just to make it nice and aesthetic.

EDIT - I forgot to add the amplification board for the RGB or a RGB-to-Svideo/composite to the price, so add at least another 20-30$ to the final price.

I'm aware of what a good one should go for, and I have no problem paying that much for one.  The only ones I've been seeing on eBay, however, start at $350 and only go up in price for no reason.
