Title: Famicombox ac adapter, Help!
Post by: Ragnar on April 29, 2011, 12:14:56 pm
Hi, i just got my famicombox, the hotel system, and i am uncertain about what kind of converter i need.
Here in Europe we have 240volt while the box needs 100volt.
Even though i know about that, dont i have to think about the output, which says on the box dc 5volt and watts 200 max?

Help would be appreciated  ;D

You need a 220 to 100 or 110V step-down transformer, something like this:

Even though I think the FamicomBox isn't too much of a power hog, better play it safe and get one of at least 100 Watts, just in case (also higher power tends to be of higher quality).
I also live in a 220V country and we are littered with these things, so you shouldn't have any problem finding one.

Thanks,
yeah i think i do need 200watts or higher, would 110 be ok even though it says 100 volt in ( 10% difference, shouldnt really make any real damage, shouldnt fry it, most probably only blow the fuse which is inside the nintendo ac adapter).

I think the 200W figure comes from having a TV plugged in to the FamicomBox (adding to the total power consumption).
Since you'll be plugging your TV directly to the wall, 100W for the FamicomBox alone is going to be more than enough.
You could go for less but smaller transformers tend to be cheap and nasty, better play it safe and get a nice 100W model.
And indeed, a 10% difference in voltage is not going to hurt anything, such variances were considered when designing the power supply.

You were completely right. i used 100-230 ac converter 45w. worked like a charm. Thanks alot.  ;D
Famicombox is awsome.  :gamer:

Be careful with the polarity in Famicom, is like that.

10 Vcc 850 mA  (http://www.pedalsnake.com/images/library2/BarrelPolarityDiagramWEB.jpg)

i am lucky, i didnt need to think about polarity because the famicombox has an adapter inside the box itself, i only needed a step down converter because i live in europe which uses ca. 230 while japan uses 100 volt.  ;D

The problem is finding one that steps down to 100v. Can you find those in your country? In Sweden they just doesn't seem to exist! I can only find 110v. In Japan though both 100v to 220-240v and 220-240v to 100v can be bought anywhere!

I have a step down converter bought at ebay with 200 Watt and it works nice with my japanese dreamcast, famicombox, super famicom box and PC Engine CD ROM Unit case...so it is more than enough ;-)

110 is ok, you really dont need to worry about 10%, mr P   :)

Yeah, some people say that, while others say you really should go for 100v...

I am using 110v and there is no problem, what so ever.
so if you have a famicombox you really dont have to worry, also if something would go wrong there are fuses on the nintendo converter, one for the plugs are 4A, i would guess that the one inside is the same  ;D

Yeah I heard it works but... I don't know what is best actually.

I don't have a famibox but I currently powers my famicom with an universal Hong Kong AC-DC adapter. But it has Type A pins so I use my  AC-AC stepdown as a means of converting the pins to europlug, but I also like to think that it is taking some load off of the AC-DC adapter in stepping down the power to 110v as I don't know if I can trust the Hong Kong adapter to do it alone. I don't know if it matters though.

I live in the u.s. and have decided to go ahead and get the step down converter. I will be running a both fam and disk (of coarse). My question is ... Can I use a splitter plug comming out of the step down to power both systems from the converter

Yeah, you can plug a splitter or a power strip into the step-down converter and all of the outlets would then be using the lower voltage.

Are all step downs that massive?  I had one the size of a plug adaptor that worked fine with gameboys etc.
