Title: For sale: Japanese Nintendo 64 games.
Post by: guineapig64 on May 27, 2011, 03:32:21 pm
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post Japanese Nintendo 64 games but I thought I would give it a try.

What I have for sale are five Japanese Nintendo 64 games and these games will work on a Japanese Nintendo 64 as well as non-Japanese Nintendo 64's.  If you don't have a Japanese Nintendo 64 and you only have a non-Japanese Nintendo 64, you will need to do a mod on the system.

Here is a video on how to do the mod, credit goes to Pikkon for finding the video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GxZJE-cx6Q (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GxZJE-cx6Q)

All of the games have been cleaned and tested and they are all in great condition.

The following games are for sale:  Wave Race 64, Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, Diddy Kong Racing, Jukyou J. League Perfect Striker, Banjo-Kazooie 2.

Here is a picture of the games:  (http://i.imgur.com/4yWKL.jpg) (http://imgur.com/4yWKL)

I can either sell these games all together or I can sell them separately but either way does not matter to me.  I can ship to any country in the world and I will only accept PayPal for the payment.

I can sell these games for either of these prices.  I will also accept offers as well:

All together - $32.00 total
Separate - $8.00 each

Let me know if you are interested or if you have any questions. :)

Maybe I'm incorrect, but those games should work on a US system provided you use a cart converter due to their different cart shape.

That's a good point.  I'm mainly saying that because these games as well as a few other games came with my Japanese Nintendo 64 and the seller on eBay said that they will only work on a Japanese Nintendo 64.  It could be possible that modifying a non-Japanese Nintendo 64 to work with Japanese games might work too but I'm not an expert on modifying game systems. :P

in order to mod a non-jap. N64 you need to open it up and cut out the tabs in the cart. bay

I didn't know that the Japanese and American Nintendo 64 have the same hardware and region.  I was always told that the Japanese and American systems have different hardware and regions to them but I personally don't know for sure.  I could try and test the Japanese games on my American Nintendo 64 but I'm not sure if that's a good idea and plus the back of the Japanese cartridges are made a little different than the American cartridges so I don't even know if the Japanese cartridges will fit in the American Nintendo 64.

EDIT:  Here is a picture showing the back of my Japanese and American Nintendo 64 cartridges.  The Japanese cartridge is on the left and the American cartridge is on the right.

Now that you showed me that YouTube video I'm pretty well convinced that the Japanese games will work on a non-Japanese Nintendo 64 as long as you do that simple mod there.  I'll go and change my description a little in my first post so I don't confuse or mislead any more people since I never meant to confuse or mislead everyone.  I was always told that the Japanese games will only work on a Japanese system and so that was mainly why I said that in my first post.  I'm sorry if I confused or mislead anyone about this.

Also this mod will not work on PAL N64's because they use a different region.

Also if you still have some of the games by next week i would be interested in a few of them.

Alright.  As of now I still have all of the games that are shown in the picture so if you're still interested you can tell me which games you would like or if you want you could take them all but that's up to you. :)

all Japanese N64 games will work on a US system, you need to open the system and cut the security tabs out, just like you would for a Super Nintendo. Japan and the US/Canada are one in the same. The only difference is NTSC-J and NTSC U/C, difference comes down to copyright protection and Voltage to run the system (US is 120, Japan is 100, not a big difference and you can even plug a japanese system into a US outlet, although I never would without a stepdown just to be safe, I guess a lot of people dont care though and they are just fine), AND THATS IT! :) Euro stuff wont work without heavy modification because they are a completly different standard, everything over there is PAL format and not NTSC.

I can confirm that J-N64 games work on North American N64 consoles.  I have around 20 J-N64 cartridges, and they all work properly.

For console purists who can't stand the thought of cutting out the tabs, buy yourself a GameBit, and swap the back of an American cartridge with the Japanese cartridge that you are wanting to play.  Using a GameShark as a passthrough device is another option.

Cheers.

@Parodius Duh - I see.  I personally never knew that the Japanese and American game systems didn't have much of a difference but for some reason I knew that there was a big difference in the European game systems (like the voltage) so as long as you cut the tabs out of the American Nintendo 64 the Japanese games will work so that's a mod that I could actually do.  Maybe I'll do that with my two Super Nintendo's that I have. :mario:

@MTessier - Switching the back of the American cartridge with the back of the Japanese cartridge sounds like a good idea too but I would personally cut the tabs out of my two American Nintendo 64's but that's if I ever have to since I also have a Japanese Nintendo 64.  Still, I like your idea. :coin:

Also PAL N64 have the same tabs as the Japanese one so Japanese cartridges fit and vice versa, but it still won't run for other reasons. The voltage is not a big problem as you can use an AC-adapter that is made for your regions N64, they all have the same output value. They are readily available and may be bought separately from the consoles. I use the one that came with my PAL N64 on my Japanese N64.

Also, I went with MTessier's idea on using the GameShark as a passthrough device since I realized that I have a GameShark and it does in fact play Japanese games on the American Nintendo 64 so for those who don't want to modify their American Nintendo 64 but still want to play Japanese games on it then I would use the GameShark.

@P - Even though the PAL Nintendo 64 has the same tabs as the Japanese Nintendo 64 it still makes sense that the PAL Nintendo 64 will not play Japanese Nintendo 64 games since both those systems have some differences.  I never knew that you can use different AC Adapters for the Nintendo 64, I always used the Japanese AC Adapter that came with my Japanese Nintendo 64 but I have it plugged into a stepdown voltage converter which is what I use for my Famicom and Famicom Disk System as well. :cherry:

UPDATE:  I no longer have the five Japanese Nintendo 64 games that I had for sale on here since I also had the games for sale on eBay and someone on eBay just recently bought them.  Just thought I would let everyone know about the update. :)
