Title: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: Parodius Duh on October 26, 2011, 10:19:58 pm
Are any of our members out there artistically skilled that could possibly help me out in making some custom Famicom cart labels

Im making a few reproductions and need labels for the following: Blade Buster, Titan Warriors, Bio Force Ape, and Metroid Deluxe. I need these labels to look as if they were legitimate. High Quality, official famicom and game company logos, etc. Anyone who can help will be rewarded greatly!   ;D Im hoping to see some of your artwork and label making skills!  :star:

I like making labels, I have made labels for 6 of my Famicom pirates that either had wrong labels or no labels. I always use clear packing tape over the printed label and glue it on with a craft glue stick. They tend to look quite nice.

Funny you say, I'm actually doing this at the moment for a whole bunch of carts.  Just make sure you print hi res and to the right size.
Also, rather than use the image preview I posted - please use the Photoshop file - I also have a vector file if someone wants/needs that.

The Bio Force one is great I think and that's official art.  The Metroid one is also good but it's squished unfortunately.
It also depends on how far you want to go with this.  Technically, all Nintendo releases use the same format - but that format changes in turn throughout the lifespan of the Famicom.  For example, Compare the labels of the early games like Tennis and Super Mario Bros to later games like Joy Mech Fight.
I find it all really interesting, whcih is why I'm doing hundreds of them.  They're just not ready yet!

I just finished making a label for "Titan Warriors", It only took me a little over a 1 hour and I will upload it soon enough.

That's really great I think.  It's very compressed though - I hope it's just a web preview version :)

It's been shrunk to half-sized; so yes it's just a preview version. It's based on the arcade game.

These are great guys!

@punkpolitical Could you maybe swap the text From your Titan Warriors label with the actual game text like on Uninvited Gremlins label?

I cant thank you guys enough, this is a huge help as I have absolutely no artistic skills or editing/photoshop skills.  :-

whoever can make the most labels that look high quality and official, no squashed or stretch image, etc... will receive a famicom reproduction cart of their choice!  ;D

Anybody up to giving these labels a try??

Blade Buster
Super Mario Bros. Hanshin Tigers Giabbit Hunting hack
Sun Man
War on Wheels
Rockman No Constancy Hack (in style of original famicom rockman game labels, please no super fancy rockman art)
Donkey Kong Pie Factory Hack
Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) Christmas Edition Hack (since the season is almost here!)  ;)

Thanks again guys!  ;D ;D ;D youre not just helping me out but everybody interested in making famicom repros! Keep the awesome labels coming! Even if there is a game that I didnt list but YOU would personally want a repro of it, well, post that label up!  ;D

Blade Buster graphic kicks ass Ryo...

By the way folks, something I should have mentioned - that label template will only fit a regular Nintendo cart properly.  Check the size of the cart you're printing onto and adjust accordingly.  Same for the back, which is slightly smaller.

It's a SMB1 hack, a nice one actually. NROM. IPS patch won't change the rom size so it's perfect for a repro. Google and youtube it for details! There was a thread here too: http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=4928.0

I made a War on Wheels NES label back when NintendoAGE was doing repro's of it.
I am gonna convert it into a Famicom format sizing, it's very nice and based on original magazine articles showing the concept box.

Haha that is hilarious! I like the background and the "MEGAMAN" text.

I think the text on the Hanshin Tigers label says something like this.

To the left:
Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks
VS
Hanshin Tigers

On the top:
Western League Regular-season Game

I think the SMB2 Xmas hack is really fun, and a blast to play around the season. I mean, its a subtle hack with just the addition of snow, Xmas hats, and a few other holiday things but I feel its a nice touch!  ;)

Can anyone do a label for the Gryzor version of Contra?

Can anyone make a Dungeons and Dragons: Dragons of the flame using this image and the original D&D text?

Here is an example of a mario hack label

You see that it is HQ so when you print the label it will not be jpegd :)

Edit:

Here is something i did quick because i have to go out now but later when i am home i will make another one and easy to be printed because this one is not in the cutout :)

Your labels looks amazing.

Anyone has a label for super fighter 2' (an street fighter clone)?

I would also need a good quality  sticker with the list of the games from this page (picture 3)

http://www.rfgeneration.com/blogs/niceguy1283/Nick-and-Steve-Game-Hunt-76-In-1-NES-Pirate-Cartridge-1509.php

Others labels i would be interested in:

Tiny toons 2
Built to win

What is the best way to print this labels?

myfreelog, I print out labels on ordinary printer paper on the vivid/high quality setting; then I place a layer of clear packing tape over the top then cut it out. I then apply a generous amount of crafting stick glue the the none taped side of the label and attach it to the cart. Hold down the label in place with your hand for about 5 minutes and you should be fine.

Doesn't that packing tape yellow over time?
If not, great idea!

actually, best bet is to find sticky printer labels and print on those, I got good results that way on my Batman cart.
That reminds me - I need to make an Arkham City one, I guess.

hhhmmmmmmm Batman! All "Batman" pirates I have are sprite-hacked versions of Monsters in my pocket :D
..but your sticker looks great!
I have my objections to the Gryzor label though... it should be Contra, no matter what. No "original Gryzor" pirate cart has the name Gryzor in game, only on the label (AFAIK). The only Gryzor hacked one is the patched version that Jedi did.

That's great!   But the subtitle comes underneath in English for western games.
Also, the Sunsoft thing is cool but I think the right logos should be on there for maximum POW :)

I like the yellow, but I pictured something white on red like the whole (yawn) marketing art style.

These images people are posting are just previews right? The real deal + template are actually bigger? I ask because most good printouts need at least 300 DPI and just by guestimates, it seems these images are kind of small.

It's using official artwork from a magazine, the artwork was very small; I increased it's size greatly and color enhanced it. Also I made a piratey looking ANN: SMB label for my repro a long time ago, and posted a article about it... So... Lol.

great stuff man! I have a request, can you take the label for Konami's King Kong 2 and make it the normal Famicom Cartridge style?

I have the official release but the label is screwed up so I would like to remove the board and put it in the slimmer, typical Famicom style cartridge case. I really hate those clunky square Konami carts!

I do it at home (at work :D), so no worries, adhesive paper + transparent foil = perfect finish. I only need to work on my cutting ability, or get somewhere some better cutting tool (using small office scisors right now).

Feel free to use a different image if you can find a better group shot. I liked this one cause it looks like the artwork from the old toy packaging. I think it may look better if the image was flipped for the label.

awesome, awesome stuff man! hoping The Japanese Monster party ROM is dumped soon, so we can put that sick label you made to use.

Glad to see your back buddy!

I have a request.....have you ever considered making Disk System obi's and sticker labels? Unfortunately I don't have templates for either, maybe someone here does? perhaps you already do punkpolitical?

I ask because Ericj runs a nice Disk re-writing service here and he has some titles that are otherwise unobtainable. Heres a couple Im going to need soon:

Legend of Zelda, Prototype Version

Aliens Prototype

Castlevania Mario Hack (Just a weird hack where Mario is now the vampire slayer! hahaa!)

did not have a template for the obi but had a good pic of one. So i made a zelda one.
Hope that this works!    EDIT MODIFIED THE TEXT SO IT SAYS NOT FOR SALE

Recca already exists. This is for hacks, prototypes, and otherwise unreleased stuff. We try to avoid the confusion of reproducing items that already exist. It is dishonest to the famicom collecting community. Of course if punkpolitical was to make entirely different artwork, then thats a different story.....but please do not request the label art to a rare official release.

at staples they sell a specific "glossy photo sticker paper" it works perfect. Its a little thinner than an official label but not by much, and has the same shine. Really hard to tell the difference...some people just use regular paper and then packing tape cut to the correct size and laid over it....this is a terrible idea as the tape will eventually turn yellow and become brittle.
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?

Packing tape does that after a few years I can confirm, at least for what I used to use.

How do you know? Did you try this yourself? Did you use acid-free tape? You seem to be against this method hardcore. ::)

I have a few pirates that they used this method for the labels, as well as an old repro that someone used tape for the label. Its just all around terrible, starts to yellow after a year-few years, its hard to lay it down without getting any bubbles, etc...just a bad idea in the long run.

Me using adhesive label paper and a clear adhesive foil after printing. I am very satisfied with the result!
Using HP ink printer, it does make a difference when it is a big and expensive one, but the main ingredient is the adhesive foil on top. It's thicker than normal duck-tape.
Printed using the same technique: http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=6808.msg106326#msg106326

Really? :-\ I think I've been doing mine since '06, & I haven't noticed anything yet. :-\ Don't want to find out, though.

I'll start using glossy photo sticker paper if I ever make one for somebody else. What sizes do they usually come in?

I think people choose glossy to look more like official labels, but with a glossy seal does it matter? :-\
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: L___E___T on April 11, 2012, 02:17:10 pm
If you're really fussy - you can get prints on metallic paper, with metallic inks and glossy seals and all sorts.
Of course it's more expensive, but nothing looks as factory finish as that.  It's better quality than back in the day!

If you want to go the route where no-one can discern, you can do that but it'll cost about the same as a RetroUSB cart.
I have it planned for  a couple of specials.

Hey PunkPolitical....any chance you could take on some NES style labels? Id love to see what you could do for Castlevania: Overflow of Darkness, All Night Nippon SMB, Spelunker 2, Time Zone, Wily and Lights Rockboard, Kung Fu II - Spartan X2 - the translation is out there as well as the original Vidpro card art. Id also love to see a mock up NES label for the yet to be found unreleased game Ultimate Journey! The vidpro art is out there for this as well. Thanks dude!

What happened to this cool thread? It can't die! I won't let it!

I'm a huge Rockman fan and I've always admired the design of the Rockman 1-6 Famicom label art. I whipped this up in my spare time yesterday after browsing through all of the neat custom labels in this thread:

I tried to mimic the simplistic style showcased on most of the Rockman Famicom carts, yet add a dash of elegance to it. Yes I realize that Rockman 9 is only available on Wii/PS3/Xbox, but I think it looks cool to see what it would have looked like had it been released on our favorite 8-bit console.

And this is just a rough mockup I threw together in five minutes what the label would look like on an actual cart:

Let me know what you guys think and I look forward to seeing more custom labels!  :)

You could always create one... That's what I had to do.  I think it was only called Megaman 10 as well, I couldn't find a Rockman 10 (unless I'm imagining it)!
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?

Following the advice of  L___E___T (Thank you!), I had to "recreate" the Rockman 10 logo. And here's the finished result of my Rockman 10 Famicom Cart:

I also was messing around on the net and stumbled upon the holy grail of Rockman collectables: "The Golden Rockman 4 Cart". See here: http://www.rockmancorner.com/2009/11/behold-gold-rockman-4-cartridge.html (http://www.rockmancorner.com/2009/11/behold-gold-rockman-4-cartridge.html)

So I thought "Wouldn't it be cool if Rockman 10 could have something similar?"
Behold! :D

Thanks again  L___E___T!

I made a Final Fantasy VII Famicom label based off of that horrid pirate with the same name. I modeled the overall structure of the label from the cover of the Final Fantasy III cart. As you can see below my FFVII label fits in quite nicely with the official labels.

The guys over at romhacking.net are doing an English tranlation of that pirate and I must admit they are working hard and it looks very promising. Check it out! http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=12466.0 (http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=12466.0)

And I made another Rockman label, this time for the popular rom hack "Rockman No Constancy".

I love doing these labels they are so much fun! If anybody has any requests I'd be more than happy to oblige and see what I could do.

How does this look? I didn't have a proper template to make large MMC5 carts, so I just kinda messed around with the dimensions of the regular famicom cart template to match the proportions of a larger MMC5 cart. Please forgive me if the dimensions aren't 100% accurate.

I once again had a hard time finding a good quality of the Rockman 4 logo, so I ended up making it from scratch like I did with my Rockman 10 cart. I thought the addition of Dr. Cossack in the Minus symbol and Dr. Willy in the Infinity symbol was a neat little effect and I liked the way it came out personally.  I ended up making the text underneath the Rockman 4 logo  "Minus Infinity" in Japanese as opposed to English because I thought it flowed better and looked more official. I made the little design in the background orange based off of the original famicom cart color of Rockman 4, as well as the cover of Rockman 4: Complete Works on the PS1. Let me know what you think jpx72!  :)

Man that is so PERFECT!!!!! That one goes straight to the printer! Don't worry about not accurate dimensions, I can adjust it slightly whenever I need it (have to measure real cart first).
But the idea and whole concept is awesome! I love the black background and orange crossline, you have both of my favourite colours right there! And the "minus infinity" is exactly as the author of the hack meant it! It's perfect that you haven't used the words rather than symbols! And of course the idea of both evil doctors is great! Although I don't know if Dr.Cossack is in the hack present, don't worry about that, it still fits the whole concept perfectly!
THANK YOU

Hmmm...do you have any suggestions for what it could look like? It's hard to design something with barely any materials or a base template.

It was already one suggestion to make label "pulse line" alike. As for me color map doesn't really matter, just don't add much pink on it :) Also not sure which color will go for the shell - black, white or gold.

How about this? I hope the Japanese text is correct, but if it isn't, it can be easily changed. Let me know what you think 80sFREAK, criticism is appreciated as always.

Looks good, can not see anything wrong with design, just have to check "HVC-FC" code, if it's not reserved already.

Definately will looks good on white shell, but for black one i suggest narrow border of background color. This would help to separate pulse line and left top area with code from the shell.

Not sure, how it will looks like with gold shell. Let's wait for few more comments.

Im in the process of making my own boxes to store my loose carts (I realized I am too cheap to afford original boxed games lol) and as such am also 'trying' to design the box art for it. Since I am only going to use it for personal use and I am in no way making money off it, Is it okay if I copy art from the net and modify it for printing to my box without putting credit to artist or the website?
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: RainLink on September 10, 2012, 05:30:14 am
I see no harm in that, I would just remember which artist did what. The only thing I could see bad with it is if you claimed that you yourself did it, which doesn't seem like what your doing. So I think your're okay  :)
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?

Duly noted Rain!  ;)

Errr and I am also in need of ideas or help touching up a box cover Im trying to make. I just dove into GIMP without any prior experience and I am having a hard time editing stuffs lol. This is what I have so far:

https://picasaweb.google.com/103621071075490462624/ReproContraBoxInProgress?authkey=Gv1sRgCNWUqumTtsmCXg

I like how the front cover came out, though it needs some enhancing I think. The back cover seems a bit too blah for me and I am simply not artistic enough to think outside of the box for awesome design options to put there so whatever anyone can come up with Ill be very interested and thankful to see... and oh that goes for the spine too.  ;D I do hope to include the two screenshots somewhere in the back as well as some captions to go with it. I have some boxed games for reference at home but theyre all in Japanese so I dont know what the texts at the back usually mean lol.

P.S. Im pretty sure I saved the full size picture but I dont know why the box cover design is small when uploaded? o.O

What do you guys use for editing? Is Gimp just not user friendly? I am having suuuuch a hard time even looking for the tools to make basic shapes and the text tool I find is also absolutely and horribly limited.  :-X

GIMP is a nice free alternative to Photoshop but it is a bit confusing and I prefer Photoshop. I don't get what the idea with a ton of separate windows is all about. I heard there's a variant of GIMP called Gimpshop with a Photoshop like interface though.
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: RainLink on September 12, 2012, 05:46:42 am
First of all, all I can say is WOW! That front cover is really sexy, I like how they both kinda "pop out" at you. As for the back, I like how you were trying to incorporate the font that's used in the game,  but I think you can go with something a bit more..upscaled. Like do you get what I mean? If you look on any back of game packaging you see they always use a generic nice looking font. Like here's 2 examples:

If you look on the back of any NES or Famiom game box, you'll notice they MOST of the time they all use a very similar font, try to match it. A very good place to figure out what font is used in pictures is whatthefont.com, where you can upload any image, albiet  it is a very clear image, and it will give you a list of fonts that is a direct match or others that look similar.

For the spine I would keep it as simplistic as possible, I would just add the logo and maybe a contra enemy to the left or right or even on both sides of the logo.

I mostly use photoshop, but gimp is also pretty good. I think in all honesty it depends on what your most comfortable with- each program have their strength and weaknesses alike.

Good luck Butcherdeliz, hope this helps and we all can't wait to see the finished product! :D

Ooh I really like that design Flemishdog-  out of all the various designs on the NES, the blackbox design is my favorite.

I've been bored lately so I just threw together four random cart designs:

Top left is a "Return of the Jedi" cart design based off of the Namcot Star Wars cart.

Top right Is just something I completely made up called "Air Man Challenge", based off of that youtube video "エアーマンが倒せない / I Can't Defeat Airman".

Bottom left is a "What if Animal Crossing was released on the Famicom?"

And last but not least is a Spider-man Dynamite game based off of that Sunsoft Batman Dynamite game.

Hey folks,

I'm having a friend put the cool NES homebrew/port of Streemerz (http://www.fauxgame.com/) into a Famicom cart for me and I made a simple cover art for it:

It's pretty much just a copy/paste job of images from the official site, but maybe it can be useful to someone else as well. Of course, if someone more artistically inclined wants to make a cooler label for it, that'd be sweet as well.

Hey RainLink! Would you please be so kind and try to remake the Rockman Minus infinity label to fit a standard NES cartridge? I don't have the measurements at the moment...
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: RainLink on October 26, 2012, 10:44:24 am
I figured a direct Famicom to NES label looked a little bit odd, so I did a few tweaks to make it look like an offical Mega Man label.

Is this to your liking jpx72?

And, if you want, I can change the logo from Rockman 4 to Mega Man 4 if you prefer, with the "Minus Infinity" in English if you want, I just left it the same due to the origins of the romhack.

I'll post the template once I finalize it after some suggestions from you jpx72! Just let me know and if anyone else wants comment, feel free!  :D

Couldn't be better RainLink!!! Thank you so much! It's really extra ordinary!
Fom the hardware side, it's just a concept. I don't know if this will be working as a real (NES) cart one day, but I am serious about trying to do it.

No no, the hack is from a Japanese author and for a japanese game Rockman 4. So no english names please. To be completely honest, one thing I don't like is the "USA" under the Capcom logo :)
Looking forward to the template, can you please think also about the part of the label that folds over top of the cartridge?
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: RainLink on October 26, 2012, 01:56:33 pm
L_E_T Thanks again - you're always so kind and supportive.  :D

jpx72 - Thank you too! For the "Capcom USA" box, do you want to just take out the USA and just leave it as the red box with the capcom logo, or do you want me to use the more common blue and yellow Capcom logo and put it in the top left area? (Where the black part is, not the dark blue part)

As for the part of the label that folds over the top of the cartridge, I completely forgot to do that, and I'm not even really sure of what the dimensions would be of that either. The template I used was courtesy of "Deluxive", a wonderful website Butcherdeliz pointed me in the direction of. Making it would be easy, but I'm just not sure what the dimensions would be of that. I'll look around for more templates.

Option 1:

Option 2:

EDIT: I went onto http://bootgod.dyndns.org:7777/ and used one of their top labels as a base:

Its a nostalgia filled trip to the by gone years which most of us still live in, but being in a theatre with the same aged people around enjoying and loving the film just like I did was a great experience. Oh no worries Jed, I actually want comments so I can update them, theyre always works in progress so critiques are always welcome!. :D Youre right, the UG logo does seem out of place on the spine, Ill see on removing it later. As for the pics, I had to do some kind of compromise between retro pics, actual game sprites and modern updated images for the covers. I actually didnt think most people would notice the difference but I guess youre one of the most avid fans that do. :D

P.S. Also many many many thanks to Manuel for all the translation help I bugged him with. :D Hopefully you dont mind, cause there more to come. lol

Ooooh I really like that boxart for TMNT Butcherdeliz! My favorite part of it is Master Splinter on the back standing on the Famicom controller haha!

I've been busy with a few requests and I wanted to see if maybe other users on FamicomWorld would like to see/use these labels!

I redid my Rockman 7 + 8 labels:

And then I also made a label for the infamous "Bad Apple!!"

I also have two other color schemes (green and yellow) for the Bad Apple label; if anyone is interested in them I'm just a PM away.

And then I made more "What If" carts that really serve no purpose but to marvel at:

I love all these!  I lost my big list of what ifs when my PC died, but it was basically all my favourite games from the last 20 years, great to see some like Starfox in there as I had those in mind too.  Can you think what an 8-bit Starfox would look like?!  I imagine a pseudo 3D shooter could still be really good done in the right way.

It would look like that old Star wars 3D Arcade Vector game...That would be cool

Thanks again everyone, especially you Star_Scream! You know I was thinking the same thing about Starfox L_E_T. There are just so many possibilities for all of these demakes on the Famicom and I love making these sort of cart labels. Who knows what the future will bring for demakes?!

I redid my Rockman 7 + 8 labels:

Those look great!  Have you made any Rockman 9 or 10 labels?  I was thinking of doing my own actually but was having trouble finding high res artwork for the Rockman 9 and 10 logos.

Also I wasn't able to find the right japanese text for the label too to make it look official like you did.  Where did you get it/what font did you use?

I have some high res logos, took me ages to find as Rocman 10 I believe was officially Megaman 10.

I'll dig it out and post in this thread.

Whew it's been a while since I've been on the forums! My last computer finally conked out on me.  :(

I'm appreciate your compliments lemons, and welcome to Famicom World! I'm not particularly good with printing out and applying the labels like some other users on here are; I just have fun making them. To answer a question you had like a few posts ago I think for the font below the "Rockman" logo I used a font called "Meiryo" Bold but I'm not 100% content with how it came out. I'm still looking for other fonts to make it look better.

punkpolitical I like that art you chose to use for that Rockman 10 label. Genius!

Oh and Butcherdeliz I freaking LOOOVE that punchout!! boxart! Punchout is easily one of my favorite games from the NES/Famicom.

Just google "Mr. Splash famicom" the template I posted here is just a PNG, you want the PDF version for best results.
If you can't be bothered with that just check the first post, it's around there.

i print on full page sticker paper, laminate the label with clear packing tape. i cut out the label with a good rotary paper trimmer, then round the corners with a 2mm corner rounder : http://www.oregonlam.com/CR2MM_2mm_3_32_Corner_Rounder_Cutter_Punch.html

You can also get lamilabel from Kinkos its a laminate that that has an adhesive backing a lot of people use it to put art work on the joysticks it won't turn yellow over time like tape tends to do.

Sure, but if you do why don't you just use the regular NES art:

All you gotta do is get the capcom logo on there at the top[ and it's exactly the same:

Label is very clean - I like it!  I think I'd have preferred it on black though.

I haven't tried out the FDS support yet but VRC7 didn't quite work unless I have a bad dump of Akumajou Densetsu.
It had the audio channels, they just didn't sound right at one point - that could just be my TV though.
I'll compare with a real cart in a couple days.  I'll test FDS games tonight.

Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?

Famicom Tantei Kurabu: Kieta Koukeisha and it's sequel Famicom Tantei Kurabu Part II: Ushiro ni Tatsu Shoujo are both on two disks each. The disks are marked 前編 (zenpen - former volume) and 後編 (kouhen - later volume).
Another example is Famicom Mukashi Banashi: Shin Onigashima that spans three two disks I think. Yuuyuuki and Time Twist also seems to span two disks each.

But I think it might be hard to just test this out since you usually need to complete the first disk and have it still in RAM before you can continue on the next disk.
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: L___E___T on February 24, 2013, 09:24:34 am
I think it can be done, because it seems to save RAM or at least some data every time I turn it off and if you press reset it keep the disk image apparently.
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: P on February 24, 2013, 11:04:34 am
Oops I checked out Shin Onigashima on internet and it's only 2 disks.

Sounds like the same as a real FDS. If you press reset in some FDS games you reset to the games title screen and don't need to load the game again. That is if the disk side with the title screen (side A) is already loaded. If that was what you meant?

It should be possible as long as the cart understands when it's time to switch to the "third disk side" (side A on disk 2). Powerpak apparently doesn't.

Found out gumshoe was a western only release, and when I found the european box art for it, I knew I had to mock up a Famicom label for it. Tried making it like the other Zapper games (full illustration, red lines on top) but it didn't look good, so I went with the standard Nintendo label design

Looks good! You probably don't need the mid-dot separating "gum" and "shoe" in the kana written title though. Not even English uses a space between them. Unless this is the official way of writing the games title of course.

That GumShoe label is awesome!!!!! Can you do some other Western only releases? Like Low G Man, Kick Master, Frankenstein, California Raisins, Silver Surfer, Uncanny X Men, and Toxic Crusaders? Those would be really cool to see in Famicom form!  :)
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: L___E___T on February 27, 2013, 02:48:24 pm
Gumshoe makes sense in this format because its a Nintendo game.  Those others are not, so I think that'd look odd.  Better to follow the publisher norms for those.

First 'FamicomWorld' version of my Everdrive label is nearly done:

The logo needs cleaning up and retracing I suspect, plus a few more details to go in.  I'll update here with final files for everything when finished.  Critique and feedback is welcome - how can I make it better?

The logo needs cleaning up and retracing I suspect, plus a few more details to go in.  I'll update here with final files for everything when finished.  Critique and feedback is welcome - how can I make it better?

That label is super clean. Love it.    I threw this one together real quick. thinking about doing a real nice one later on.

Yeah it would look odd, I wasnt implying for him to do it in the Nintendo label style, just make Famicom labels for those games.

Can you do some other Western only releases? Like Low G Man, Kick Master, Frankenstein, California Raisins, Silver Surfer, Uncanny X Men, and Toxic Crusaders? Those would be really cool to see in Famicom form!  :)

Why in dear God would anyone want to see X-Men for Famicom? Let alone play it? That game is a travesty to Marvel & mutants everywhere.(http://www.websitegoodies.com/smilies/character0225.gif)

Looks great!  What font do you use for the katakana?

Think I used Kartika.

Looks good! You probably don't need the mid-dot separating "gum" and "shoe" in the kana written title though. Not even English uses a space between them. Unless this is the official way of writing the games title of course.

Thanks, put gum and shoe into google translate and hoped for the best and didn't bother with removing the dot in case it was important
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: P on February 28, 2013, 03:03:33 am
I see, then it definitely shouldn't be there. Mid-dots are mostly used instead of a space to separate two foreign words or names (like first name and last name) written in katakana.

I like it! I would add the title in Japanese "エバードライブ" like on real pulse line cartridges. The most common Japanese font is probably "Gothic" (eg. "MS PGothic" that ships with windows). I have no idea what Nintendo used on their cartridges though.

I actually already had the title added, I disabled the layer before saving somehow :)
I have the same katakana you have there, so good to know I got it right first time (but I should hope so!).

You can see the gap where I left it in.

Gotta admit though, I wanted to keep the made in Japan and Nintendo copyrights.  Doesn't seem like a proper pulse line cart without them.  I could change the date to 20XX and say 'made in Ukraine' but that seems a bit knock-off.

i bet it was made in china, but engineered in another country.

The pulse lines ratio is totally wrong.

It's Ukraine, home of Krikzz.  The pulse line ratio is a recreation (Nintendo Logo Resource), the placement is correct but I noticed it has a funny ratio on the lines.  Still, it's the best one around and I don't feel like retracing it just yet (I probably will later).

What does that mean?  Don't use FW for comparison, use a real pulse line cart.  The homepage of FW doesn't use an accurate pulse line ratio for starters.

as you can see the lines ratio is okay, but the spaces ratio is wrong!
look closer and you can see:
there are 5 pulse lines with 4 space lines between;
the total pulse lines width is very closer to 1/2";

the 1st pulse line is really close in width to 7.62 mm (3 lines!)
the 2nd pulse line has the same width as the 4th space line
the 3rd pulse line has the same width as the 2nd space line
the 4th pulse line has the same width as the 1st space line
the 5th pulse line has the 1/2 width of the 4th pulse line

On the pulse, I might just delete that last line or start again.  Not sure.

Hi all,

Got a pirate of FDS all night Nippon and was wondering is there any chance someone could make me an obi for it. It can be as pirate looking as you like I'd just love to have an obi instead of a stack of disks with no labels and I've found the obis for the other games I own online.

Cheers,

Al.

Im sure you can find the actual obi at full size and high quality by doing a google search.

Is PunkPolitical still here? those labels earlier in this thread look amazing. If hes here still, or if someone is up to the challenge, How about Famicom style labels for Low G Man, Frankenstein, Silver Surfer, Uncanny X Men, and Toxic Crusaders? The more Japanese they could look the better. I have the correct Japanese text/characters for Toxic Crusaders, X Men, Silver Surfer, and Frankenstein if anyone wants to take on the challenge! 60 pin pirate carts exist for all these games and the labels always suck. Id love to transfer these boards into a official famicom shell and put a nice label on so it looks like if it were an actual release!  ;D

I have quite a few cartridges without any label, and I have decided to try making custom labels for them, but I have some questions about it.

1) What program is the best to use for designing custom labels?
2) What should be the correct size of the picture?
3) What settings should be for printing that label you have made?
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: L___E___T on June 16, 2013, 03:11:20 am

1. Adobe Photoshop, or Adobe InDesign.
2. Measure the label, set to 600 dpi (or 300).
3. This depends on your printer, but set the PSD/IDD file to CMYK mode.

Heres a cart I just finished for a customer. He wanted a repro cart for Super Mario Bros. Special. But I couldn't find a famicom game with a SAROM pcb. So I took his NES repro with a nes to famicom adapter and fit it into a large famicom shell. Worked out great.

I have an NES repro as well, but mine may not be the same ROM as the one pictured. Mine is an SMB rom-hacked to have the SMB Special level design. So yes, mine scrolls. I say this may not be the same, because the graphics in mine are exactly the same as the original SMB (and Mario seems to be wearing the alternately-colored clothes from the original SMB Special in the screenshot).

Anyone remember my custom label that I designed and made for my SMB2j repro?

Now look what I find on ebay during my usual famicom searches....trying to be sold by none other than Retrohouse Thailand:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Mario-2-Lost-Level-W-Slip-Cover-JAPAN-Famicom-RARE-/190865763567?_trksid=p2047675.l2557... The listing is over but I have no doubt it will be relisted.

So they used different fonts, but it's pretty obvious they blatantly stole my label. Not that I can do anything about it.

I'm sure everyone here knows better, but please please please do not waste $129.99 on this "RARE" copy.

::) That's what I get for selling my games on ebay with good quality photos...
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: L___E___T on August 03, 2013, 04:10:44 pm
I wouldn't get upset about it.  Repros are repros, the art is not yours but you're right they cloned the design for some reason.
He has other label designs and sells a lot of carts, so nt sure why he specifically copied the design.  He has been making and selling these for a ling time, I think I even bought mine from him a long time ago.  Sure they're overpriced but so is a lot of other stuff on eBay.  I personally hate the VGA 'scene' way more than what this guy is doing.  It may not be official, but it's still a rare cart to some degree.  It's not much diffent than an overpriced Starfox 2 repro in m eyes.
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: gcfernandez on August 03, 2013, 06:05:07 pm
I'm sure he copied it because my mine sells on a regular basis and wants in on the action. Hard not to get upset when you spend alot of time trying to design something unique to differentiate your carts from others. I mulled over hours on little details like text placement, color, layout, and even flipping mario around so that his 2 fingers are next to the 2 in the title so that it doesnt look like he's just throwing up a peace sign. Maybe I put too much effort in my work (Jay-ray can vouch, i'm doing his monster party cart right now) so that when someone just right click-save-print's to call it a day, call it "rare" and put a stupid price on it, it stings just a little.  /rant

Now to see how long it takes him to take my No Constancy label too  ;D

But yea, VGA scene makes me sick as well.

1st fuck VGA
2nd fuck "repros"

Every time I step into the Nintendo side of things, I get sick, vomit in a can, and then get the hell out of there as fast as I can, which is funny, since I grew up on NES, and collected NES before collecting became trendy.  With the "repros", just so much modern garbage is being churned out by the bucket load, being advertised as rare, and people are buying it for insane prices.

Maybe it makes me a hypocrite to feel this way about those "repros", seeing as I am collecting multicarts from Bit Corp and the extensive line of bootleg games from Whirlwind Manu, their "L Series", but owning a cart catalogue from them printed in 1990 just helps show me that although not legit, there is some historical value (though little I guess) to those boots, while the modern boots (repros) are just modern crap with no historical value at all.  Fuck it all.

Did this one yesterday. To separate it from the official release (not that I'd be able to fool anyone with a white cartridge) I did a new label with a Game and Watch inspired look.

Blade Buster. I know, I should've used the official logo, especially since the developer even had guidelines about it  :-\

Mostly though I make carts for games that don't even exist, haha. Not much use to people here but it's a fun hobby.

Hope to share some of my own soon...

Anyone remember my custom label that I designed and made for my SMB2j repro?

(http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s44/gcfernandez/IMG_20130105_114854.jpg) (http://s149.photobucket.com/user/gcfernandez/media/IMG_20130105_114854.jpg.html)

Now look what I find on ebay during my usual famicom searches....trying to be sold by none other than Retrohouse Thailand:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Mario-2-Lost-Level-W-Slip-Cover-JAPAN-Famicom-RARE-/190865763567?_trksid=p2047675.l2557... The listing is over but I have no doubt it will be relisted.

Could you please tell us how you go abouts to make these labels??
Like do you use an Inkjet printer or laser printer, what kind of paper do you use ect..
I recently bought a huge lot of FC games and they all pretty much have damaged labels so I would love to fix up my top picks so they dont look like they just came out of someones trash can.
I tried making a few labels my self using an inkjet printer and some standard printer paper but they all turned out like total crap and you could see the dotty look that an inkjet printer prints when printing images on paper.
I look at your labels and I dont seem to see those dots and it looks like they are real factory pressed so how do you do it??
Please share with us please please please with sugar on top!!
Thanks lots for any and all help.
(http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s44/gcfernandez/retrohouse_zpsf57f37cf.jpg) (http://s149.photobucket.com/user/gcfernandez/media/retrohouse_zpsf57f37cf.jpg.html)

So they used different fonts, but it's pretty obvious they blatantly stole my label. Not that I can do anything about it.

I'm sure everyone here knows better, but please please please do not waste $129.99 on this "RARE" copy.

::) That's what I get for selling my games on ebay with good quality photos...

Thought I'd be helpful - you could make a decent quality label using one, some, or all of these artwork resources:

- http://www.game-ost.com/static/covers_soundtracks/188_991250.jpg
- http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m4yb78ticw1qd4q8ao1_1280.jpg
- http://www.arcade-gear.com/Games/Salamander/Salamander.htm (click on the different images)

I need to make a Salamander label myself at some point - but it's for a hack not the main game, it probably won't be what you're after and probably won't be soon...

The genuine game label is a clear label on a translucent cart - so that could be an issue :P

You could recreate that pirate label though very easily with the links I provided.  It's just art + logo + product code on white.

So guys...challenge mode. I just received my copy of the bootleg Rockman 1-6 cart in the mail today from a very nice "YAKUZA" here.

well, as expected...its that awful bootleg plastic feel. So I want to put the board in an ACTUAL famicom cart. and give it a new label. So here's what id like. I'd do it....buttttttt Im awful lol

so

Rockman 4 label. replace the picture of rockman on that cart with the one attached. And add SAGA from the other attached photo into the empty space below "Rockman" logo.

Thus a label saying Rockman Saga with a cute ass little rockman

Anyone up to the challenge? :) Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee?

That could be done quite easily - the tedious part would be erasing around the logo on the Rockman 4 label.

Are you sure you wouldn't prefer a cuter Rockman though??  I've seen some even more kawaii / chibi than that even.

For example:

Ok you can't really use all of those easily, but might be worth taking a trawl through deviantart to see.

This is an amazing thread and I love it! I just discovered it today and while I am a veteran video games developer, I am not a illustrator. The work done here is nothing short of genius!

I love famicom over NES since I use an AV famicom and I also prefer famicom cartridges. I have had done for me BLADE BUSTER, TITAN WARRIOR and even a traditional cartridge DEZAEMON!

I would love to also see KICK MASTER, the second G.I. JOE: ATLANTIS FACTOR and TALESPIN done by someone here since I hope to have those built in the near future!

My favorite game of involvement with 70+ was creator and designing for  "Maximo: Ghost to Glory". I also worked on the original "Crash Bandicoot" as designer, producer and co-creator.

Many others including "Aero the Acrobat" which was originally designed for the famicom! At that time I worked for Sunsoft and we were designing and planning for the the third generation of Sunsoft famicom games that were to feature the Sun 5b and 7 chips (like the second generation games were starting to be released). The Sega Genesis and later the SFC/SNES kill that and they were all cancelled.

Ah, I believe we've met then, I bought your Dezaemon from eBay I believe... :)

I had meant to ask you all sorts of questions but never sorted out a few.

Without putting you on the spot TOO much, woulf you be interested in doing a mini 'ask me' thread?  There are a lot of big Sunsoft fans here, myself included.

I loved Maximo by the way, turned out exactly how I'd hoped it would play and loved the sequel too.

Post Merge: June 11, 2014, 02:41:04 am

Also very sad to hear those plans were scrapped, albeit for the right business reasons.  Would you be able to say after all these years, what kind of games they were??
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: dragon1952 on June 11, 2014, 06:22:42 am
Yeah, you probably did buy that from me. I have sold a ton of games over the last four or five years from my personal collection. Funny, I never intended to sell any of it but being out of work and my wife having cancer changed that...

I am being interviewed for a book recently about Sunsoft and just also turned down Retro magazine as I haven't felt well lately, but I would consider it. I just want to be part of the crowd here as I am a big famicom/SFC gamer.

I too would love to see the labels for Game Center CX, as I love those games and bought and was able to play through the second one without english. Those games should be on famicom but I suppose they are more technically advanced than 8bit.

Just a quick question. Where do you guys get these printed? I've made my own for a Kira Kira Star Night cart I'm going to be making soon, but even making/printing it at 600 DPI it looks pretty, well, bleh. What are your printing methods?
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: Bluecowbowling on July 28, 2014, 11:26:07 am
Just like you, we print them our selves. you gotta print them in the highest DPI possible and make sure your printer can print at leased 1600 DPI or your lables will look like shit. Also make sure you force highest DPI printing in your settings and make sure your printer isnt lowering dpi during printing. You can use any style paper you want. I use Self adhesive paper and laminate over the top or ultra thin Ultra bright white printable vinyl labels which dont allow running or smudges but that is super super expensive like $10-20 a sheet.Hope that helps.

Something I created today. It has some resemblance with the "original" that AlexRUS (http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2562) has (or has not, because it's badly damaged).
Here are two files: preview of Peek-A-Boo multicart and one reproduction label of my own multicart.
I have 300dpi printfiles also.

Here's my first stab at a label for my Gimmick! reproduction (http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/index.php?topic=11537.0). I wanted the label to have that pirate vibe about it.

Hello all,

How are the experienced label markers here producing the high-gloss effect common in game labels of the period?  Lamination or tape over a printed-paper label?  Thanks!

what are the uhh err appropriate dimensions/settings for printing labels like these?

a year or so ago i had some printed on plain sticker paper at fedex office but i dont remember the settings required for getting them the right size  :'(

also, the corner rounders mentioned earlier in this thread are on sale  (http://www.ebay.com/itm/2mm-Corner-Rounder-Cutter-Hand-Held-Heavy-Duty-Steel-ID-Card-Cutting-Corners-/161615673007?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25a10b76af) (not really.. cheap but cheaper than they were)

Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?

You don't need the template, just measure the area on your cartridge that holds the label and set the document size in your program.

The template used here is just a PNG I saved of a PDF template from the Mr. Splash! label.  But 47 is right, it was nothing more than a measured label with crop marks, you could set it up in AI or ID in 2 mins.

No - JP version, I can live without the pause button beat  8)
Masaya logo suggests also the JP version.
US and EU had Tradewest logo on the label.

Claw is a fun hack. It has some new level designs and music - some even from Double Dragon.
Grayzone is also a hack of Rockman 2 - http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/871/

Infact you can. If you use desoldering pump/gun or solderwick to get out all the solder. Take a few inches of 22 gauge wire, bend it to V or U shaped hook, slide the hook behind the 6th leg and gently (holding both ends of wire) drag the pin out of the hole.

in my area, Battletoads is pretty hard to find. Mainly because resellers are buying them all up and charging above ebay prices. Plus, Battletoads repro is for my personal collection only, but i figured i would share my label to others who want to use it.
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: L___E___T on May 29, 2015, 02:27:26 am
Battletoads Famicom is an expensive game, repros of it have some demand.  I'm not sure what you mean about acceptance - the label's different enough at least.
Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?
Post by: Ghegs on May 29, 2015, 04:54:09 am
A game being expensive or hard to find isn't a good enough reason to make a repro, and I would hope to see such repros discouraged. I can understand repros of games that are literally impossible to acquire (like a Famicom repro of the NES-only Battletoads & Double Dragon...and even then you could just buy an adapter and play the NES cart), but otherwise no.

But that's just my $0.02 and probably more suited to another discussion.

After i made the BTDD label, a thought came across my mind, "What other awesome games didn't get a japanese release?" Well, after doing some research, i found 2 awesome games that were suprisingly unreleased in Japan. Now, i don't plan on making repros of these, nor do I advise making repros of these games since they're not like BTDD or Suprise at Dino Peak expensive, but should anyone make repros of these anyways, feel free to use the labels! It's fun making these labels :) Also, the Batman Returns label I modeled after the famicom Batman released by Sunsoft.

Can someone do a new label for War in the Gulf? I'm working on a mapper hack that'll eventually be released to everyone. Donor carts will be standard size Nintendo. I know there's a 60 pin cart out there for this game, so I'd like a label that's clearly different. Can say repro or whatever on it as well, no objection there.

In return, I will post your label with the correct size. I peeled and measured a real Konami label, the size should be 9cm x 6.75cm.

Hey Guys,

Could someone make me a label for Dragoon X Omega II?

Here is the link to the game, it's a massive hack of Final Fantasy and I'm making a cartridge of it for my Famicom, I would love a kick ass label for this game.

Custom in what sense?  Generally these labels are for games that didn't come out on cartridge, so that repros can have appropriate labels.  What are you looking for?

Here's some useful artwork you could quickly make a nice label from:

Pops quite nicely with those white/gold YAKUMAN TENGOKU carts. Most of my labels are primarily designed for die cutting machines. Especially if you want to keep that gold bezel intact perfectly.

It's to scale.

Anyone have or can make a Kid Icarus label in Famicom size? Preferably using the Japanese or European labels as source, not the hideous USA version.

Also I'm  interested in:

Rockman 4 Minus Infinity in standard Famicom size (not MMC5 size)
Zelda Outlands Famicom size.

I will compensate as requested.

Also does anyone do famicom cartridge work? Or can recommend someone to make  a couple of custom famicom cartridges for me.

Thanks greatly!

Title: Re: Custom Famicom Cartridge labels?

Rockmanzallz kindly approached me concerning an updated logo and corrected copyright info for Monster Party (JPN Prototype). This is still a community ROM, so I will share this improved label.

[updated, see below]

I managed to find acceptable artwork for Super Mario Bros. Special, it'll do but the quality could be better. If anyone wants I can post it.

Much earlier in this thread, someone made a SMB Special cart using an NES SAROM board + pin adapter + tall FC shell. I think that is way overkill. The Famicom already has at least one very compatible board, SJROM. It offers MMC1, PRG RAM and battery saving, good for Dragon Warrior 1 as well.

EDIT: Jay-ray supplied me with a better artwork source, so here is a further refined label for Monster Party (JPN Prototype).

I hope it won't hurt to post in this thread after two years... :redcart:

So let me show what I prepared recently. This is a set of custom labels for a repro cartridge with Layla: The Iris Missions, an amazing romhack made by SupperTails66.
(https://i.imgur.com/7de9URxm.jpg) (https://i.imgur.com/7de9URx.png)

Well... almost prepared, the front label lacks any sort of artwork. Sure, I could have slapped the character from the title screen and remake her with vectors but that's not what I'm aiming for. I traced all the logos and stuff with vectors to recreate design of the original label all while adding the new stuff where neccessary so it looks like an actual sequel to the original game released back in the day. All I need now is to commission some artist to make an artwork of the protagonist in that neat mid-1980s style. And that's the hardest part, I'm not artistically gifted myself to make one.

I'm surprised how good this one turned out to be, I still do most of my graphic design in Paint Shop Pro 7, a very old piece of software at this point. As of the artwork itself, I've managed to commission a deviantART user pommiie (https://www.deviantart.com/pommiie) since I think she would get the 1980s anime style right, especially with the reference I provided her. I'll post the completed label here once its done.

Next up will be Blade Buster, the design of this one is gonna be modelled after Star Soldier Famicom cart.

It's almost done... emphasis on "almost". I forgot to tell the artist to draw the character art with a horizontal background, instead she went with square proportions which is hard to fit onto a label that is horizontal. So it's up to me to do something about it. Stay tuned at the moment.

That's pretty sweet! Are the dimensions for a Namco cart or a standard Nintendo-manufactured cart?  If it's for a Namco cart, all that would be missing is an End-Label.

Does anyone here do custom NES label printing with laminate seals? I'd like custom labels for RoboCop vs. Terminator and California Raisins:

https://www.retrogamecases.com/shop/nes/robocop-versus-terminator/
https://www.retrogamecases.com/shop/cartridge-labels/nes/california-raisins-the-grape-escape/

I'd prefer not to have the "Official Seal of Quality" on these, but that's not a big deal. I also don't want them to be stickers; I like to use photo glue so I can adjust the labels after I place them. With stickers, it's easy to mess up.

I am looking for the fonts used in this label for the following texts:
- Family ComputerTM (in Japanese)
- HVC-ZL

Does anyone have a link to those fonts? Otherwise do people manually trace these elements when creating their custom labels?
