Title: Video Uploaded of Japanese "Uncut" Prototype Version of Monster Party!
Post by: Parodius Duh on December 31, 2011, 09:39:41 am
After many years, the elusive "Uncut" Japanese version of Monster Party showed up on Yahoo Japan Auctions and obviously sold for a hefty sum. Up until this auction a few months ago, only screenshots were known to exist....well, here's a video of the prototype versions title screen in action! Hopefully we will get to see a R0M dump in the near future!

How high are the chances that a ROM dump could be made into a repro cart?

I don't think the ROM dump has been made out of the prototype yet. The original is MMC1 so fairly easy to reproduce.

Nice to know!  :redcart:
(I know that there is no ROM dump yet, but I wanted to know if a repro could be made in case someone dumped the ROM.)

monster party has a huge cult following cause of it's obscurity and being horror themed. having blood and gore in 8 bit times was almost unheard of the game was never released in japan but a prototype was made and it's said the us version that released was watered down compared to the jp prototype. My personal childhood memory with this was renting it at the video store and trying so hard to get past level 2 but never getting past till I was alot older. When that video store went out of business and they were selling off all there games I bought that copy of monster party along with a few other games. My favorite part of the game is in level 1 is when every thing seems nice and cute till you pass that big tree and the whole level changes to a horror scene.

Everyone already knows that Japanese versions of videogames are always better... Japanese Uninvited is like way cooler, I want a English translation of the Japanese version of Uninvited. So very badly.

What about Final Mission/S.C.A.T./Action in New York? The latter two versions are a lot better in my opinion :P

And don't forget Maniac Mansion.
The Japanese version is really not that good (or so I heard...).

That's an odd one.  It's pretty much the same game, but with a totally different art style.  The NES version is probably objectively better, but the FC version is far from bad and certainly has a charm of its own.

Here's the thing about Yahoo Japan Auctions:

1. You can't search based on completed auctions the way you do on Ebay
2. However, you can view completed auctions if:
                 a. You have an account on Yahoo Japan
                 b. You kept the auction id for that auction (only way that I know of to pull up the completed auction)
                 c. It's only up for a temporary amount of time after completion (2 weeks? I forgot)

When I saw those 2 auctions, I thought oh cool... but not much else. I wasn't interested in buying either. I also didn't bother to keep track of the auction ids. I only keep track of ids for auctions that I'm interested in sniping or bidding at a later time.

If you believe me or not, it doesn't really matter to me. However, I did see that the final winning bids weren't all that high. I believe prior to that, the last documented auction sold for the equivalent of 5k USD. Also, one had a white sticker label that only had printed text and the other was just a blank cartridge. Both carts were plain white. Both auctions had pictures displaying the screens from the game.

What I wouldn't do to get my hands on both of those protos. I just hope that at some point, someone dumps them both. Playing them on an emulator or as repros would be better than never playing them at all, I say.

I'm with you there. I've been dying to play the prototype ever since I found out that it was never released in Japan.

Dont hold your breath. There is only 1 confirmed copy, possibly 2 more but they are unconfirmed. All are in Japanese collectors hands and they have a tendency to NOT dump ROM files.  Hell, a Japanese collector had Bio Force Ape for YEARS, throughout all the internet hype, etc. Could have dumped that at anytime but he didnt, then it went to auction and Americans won it and it was online a week later. To buy the actual prototype your looknig at spending at least $5000 and as high up to $10,000.

I thought there was a strider prototype ROM out already? hmm...maybe not. Cool!

True, but a man can dream... a man can dream.

I've never seen it online, and as far as I know it was never dumped - but if it exists, I'd love to find it. So would quite a few other people I know.

Soooo, could one of our members in Japan browse some Japanese ROM sites or other pages to see if maybe this has been dumped?
