Title: Famiclone controllers
Post by: yirmiahu72 on February 22, 2012, 04:22:13 pm
I have a famiclone that came with Playstation style controllers. They work quite well, but I can't stand using them.

I'm looking for something that looks and feels a little more retro like old NES gamepads.

I'm suprised how hard it is to find famiclone controllers by themselves in the wild. You would think they would be more common. Does anybody know a place to score a db9 famiclone controller on it's own?

Are there any db9 controllers or gamepads that work with famiclones straight up or is my only option gonna be to wire an old NES controller to my current famiclone gamepads?

I think you can use Genesis/Mega Drive, Master System or Atari controllers.

I tried a Mega Drive controller and the famiclone freaked out before I even fully plugged it in. So I immediately stopped.

I thought about a Master System controller, but after failing the Genesis controller test, I'm a little bit skeptical.
Besides those controllers only have 2 buttons, no select or pause.

I also tried an Amiga Hyperpad that also has no select or start buttons. Strangely enough the only thing that worked was down and that was pausing the game.

I guess it seems to be pretty much a crapshoot as far as substitute controllers go. I just thought someone might know of a controller that works better than others. Maybe an MSX

It's not so easy to substitute famiclone pads, Atari will not work, Sega MD/MS no chance too. But I suggest asking tonev, he should have plenty of famiclone pads - Famicom style!

So they have the same plugs but won't work? Damn.  >:(

a friend told me the buttons are wired differently

if it is true, it shouldn't be too difficult to resolder the wires

maybe you should buy a better famiclone though. The Neo-fami is cheap, you can get one for 15$ or so, and they have quite nice controllers. I mean, you can then use the controllers, because I think they are interchangable between clones, I recall doing that once.

Yes famiclone controllers are interchangeable... you can't use mega drive / genesis or any other 9 pin controllers because they are wired in a different way... And yes i do have a lot of famicom styled famiclone controllers and they are great they almost feel like original famicom controllers :) the shape and the size is the same with the exception of the turbo fire buttons.  Oh and another thing do not destroy original sega or other 9 pin controllers just for playing them on a crappy famiclone...

I have a question...
is there any way to use 9 pin famiclone controllers on console that have 15 pin controllers slot?

unles you create a converter or you solider 15 pin on the board instead of the 9 pin
