IGN has this interesting article out today. http://games.ign.com/articles/121/1219585p1.html (http://games.ign.com/articles/121/1219585p1.html)
I think they made some overall very good choices, but including 2011 is pretty silly. For me it's either 1985 or 1987(which they didn't include).
Man, reading that article makes me realize how unusual my gaming tastes are. Most the game examples they gave for each year, I don't even care too much for.
My personal choice would probably have to be 1999.
I can't say I even recall any games that came out in 1999. 98 was incredible, and I remember eagerly anticipating the next great game that year. What games were great in 99?

Well, growing up, the Dreamcast was my beloved favorite console, and it remains my favorite to this day. As you probably know, it's U.S. release was in 1999. Many of the initial Dreamcast games released here in 1999 are the most important to me personally, such as Sonic Adventure, House of the Dead 2 and Marvel Vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes. So yeah, it's pretty much an opinion based on personal nostalgia. (Plus they're still some of my favorites)
Besides that I agree with 1991, as stated in the article. Street Fighter II, as well as all the initial Super Nintendo titles are brilliant.
Nothing wrong with nostalgia. Oh I remember the Dreamcast launch very fondly, Soul Calibur is one of my favorite games ever. I guess 99 was pretty damn good. :)
How could I forget about Soul Calibur, that's another classic.
Wtf they skipped most of the 90s. I'm going to say ....1994....super metroid, ninja warriors, final fantasy 6
That poll on IGN is pretty ridiculous. They ask which year is the best, but then only give you 7 years out of the 35 since the Atari 2600 came out that you can vote on? I understand the limits of polls and making one with 35 options would be difficult, but perhaps they might have broken it up into 5 year bits or something.
By decade for me:
80s - 1983. Famicom and all of its original releases came out at once. Hard to beat those.
90s - 1997 - Lots of good N64 games came out that year.
00s - don`t know, don`t care. ;D

Haha 00s are weak for sure. For 80s I'll go wtih 1989 that's when gaming really got good. Of course in japan they had all these rocking games in 1988...but we didn't get a lot of these great titles until either 89 or 90. Stuff like famicom wars (which we never got), megaman 2, mario 3.
I'd probably say 1986 or 1987, a lot of great arcade games came out in those years. ;)

For example? R-type comes to mind but anything else?

Off the top of my head, I'd say Contra, Bubble Bobble, Double Dragon (I think that was a 1987 release) and Wonder Boy. Also, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Rockman and Kid Icarus were released in those years. :)
I'm for 1983, it's the year written on the bottom of my Famicom and on my birthlist, so nothing can beat that :D
200X, obviously.
