Title: Famicom Cases
Post by: nerdygrrl on March 18, 2012, 08:08:16 am
I know there are aftermarket cases for MVS collectors (shock boxes) and even these for SNES Collectors http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Metroid-Nintendo-SNES-Custom-Collectors-Game-Case-Only-NO-GAME-/320801564205?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab143662d#ht_3597wt_1064

Is there anything out there for Famicom carts?  I would REALLY like to get some protective cases and artwork for some of my harder to find games.

Unfortunately those cases tend to be expensive, Ive only seen them for $2-5 a piece.

There was a guy who started a poll in this thread (It says super famicom protectors but if you read the topic it shifts to the need for loose famicom cart cases, apparently this guy can make them), go vote and voice your opinion please! :)
(it needs a bump anyway  ;) )

For my boxed famicom games I actually use NES box protectors. Works out well because famicom boxes come in all sorts of sizes from very small to the size of a US NES box (Athena). These also help to keep everything at a uniform size which makes shelving a lot easier. Also gives more structural integrity given that some of the boxes are very old and not as rigid as they used to be.

The bottom shelf is holding 3 rows deep and 3 rows high worth of carts and is rock solid.

I love that CIB collection, Stealthlurker.

I keep my CIB collection in these plastic tubs I get from the 100 yen shop that are designed to hold VHS cassettes.  They can hold 18 of the average-sized Famicom boxes, I have 8 of them full of about 150 games (my CIB collection recently entered a phase of rapid growth).  I kind of like these better than buying protective cases for the individual games as they are a lot easier to access that way.  Ideally I would like to display the nicer ones some day but that will have to await a bigger apartment.

For my loose carts I have no way of protecting them so they just sit stacked here and there wherever I have space.  I have to admit that with some of the more expensive ones I do get a bit worried especially since we acquired a dog last year with an uncanny ability to urinate in places you would not have expected him to. ;D  I would love to get some of those cart holders Manuel posted the link to.

Thanks senseiman. Yeah finding individualized protectors for loose carts is a more difficult path. I see those official Famicom cart cases on YJ but given the current exchange rate, shipping and middleman fees they'd average around 20-25 USD a pop for me. Not a very viable solution given that I'd want a bunch of them.

I've been searching around certain "industrial" packaging and case providers on the Internet, but haven't found a good solution yet.

What does "a pop" mean?
I have a couple for sale at a Swedish marketplace, though you'd have to create an account and so on...

Oh haha, yeah it's American slang for "each".

Not exactly the same thing as what the OP was saying. I'd definitely purchase some Famicom-styled "Shockboxes" for my loose carts ... which reminds me, I created a custom insert for my MVS multicart  ;D

Posting this in case it's useful to some. They're about as cheap as I've seen and are well used, but I like that - much more charm and love in these than new!

those cases are just so damn expensive......If I was to buy one for each game I own Id be looking at over 500 bucks.......wish that guy who was making the CIB cases would come back and see that the poll hes made has a bunch of people wanting loose cart cases. I have no idea why nobody makes loose cart cases, they are immensely needed!!!!!!! I may just say screw it and venture into this market myself!

You should hit up the guy who runs this operation:

http://videogameboxprotectors.com/products/super-famicom-cartridge/

He sells boxes for loose SFC games. I'm in talks with him now about selling Neo-Geo AES box protectors at a lower price than current sources. I just need to get him dimensions for the 3 types old style soft case, carton box and snap lock cases for Neo-Geo.

I also just bought about 500 SFC box protectors for my CIBs... gonna need a lot more though!

awesome!!!!! Those loose sfc cart cases would be perfect....I think.

Famicom and SFC carts are about the same size, right? SFC carts are only slightly bigger.

I've noticed that SMS and Genesis boxes work great for the Famicom carts.  I was thinking about just hunting down a bunch of those are trying to do custom inserts like the MVS shock boxes.  A lot of the stores out her toss them because they don't have space for them and they just sell loose carts.

Can't believe I haven't tried that. Do they really fit well? Might be hard to source cheap empty sms/genny cases in my neck of the woods, but if it's true then UGC cases should work also.

Is there a insert archive for famicom games out there also?

SFC carts are bigger by a bit all around, so they'll be sliding around a bit inside. However, it's definitely an option that'll protect them and make'm look sharp.

Im not to concerned with them moving around, as theyll mainly just be on a shelf. Can you possibly take a pic of a Famicom cart in one of these cases, if you happen to have one?

I don't have any of those SFC loose box protectors and that site seems to have discontinued them. He states that SNES loose box protectors are better and will be restocked sometime in May.

However, there is this alternative too:

sick, those bags will work!  (as long as they are acid free, like comic book bags.. which the auction doesnt mention)

My main concern is the carts actually rubbing up against each other, especially pirates. A lot of pirates use cheap-o materials and carts anywhere from 5-20 years old have a good chance that the plastics will begin breaking down. Ever receive a pirate and the plastic is really shiny, slimy/oily feeling, has weird spots, etc?......thats the plastic degrading away and it is a contagious disease that WILL infect even your not so cheap official releases.  Luckily it hasnt happened yet, but my buddy told me a horror story Id never want to live through. He had to quit the hobby cause all of his carts began degrading, even rarities worth a few hundred a pop.  Better be safe than sorry!

Same goes for moldy/mildew carts. Just throw it in the trash unless you want every cart of yours covered in it, and mold eats right into the plastic casing.

and never, never EVER leave your games in the basement, even if it is re-finished and you game down there. Too damp, unless you have multiple dehumidifiers.

Starving Marwin, how you will wipe out "NAMCOT" sign on the manual holder?
