Title: Splatterhouse and other larger Famicom carts in a front-loading NES?
Post by: fromjapanwithpixels on April 09, 2012, 08:29:12 pm
I'm a new user so hopefully this is the right forum  :-[, but:

I've recently been collecting Famicom games and playing them with a pin converter on my NES which works out great. However, I recently acquired a copy of Splatterhouse and it simply will not fit into the cartridge slot due to it's larger size. I tried using a Game Genie to extend the whole catridge chain out, but the Game Genie I bought doesn't work as intended! Rather it's with an NES cart or the pin converter and a Fami game, I have to open up the system and manually apply light pressure to get the pins to connect.  :(

Is there any other way I can play these larger carts without having to resort to buying a Famicom? I'd rather avoid that when my NES works so well and I happen to play cartridges from both sides of the pond.

nothing I can think of......you either need a top loader NES or famicom/famiclone.

I once saw a "Game Key" for sale that would probably do the job. Check out the picture on this page:

Please note that there's another adapter called a "Game Key", but it's more or less like a Game Genie, and if a Game Genie doesn't work for you then I suppose the other type of "Game Key" won't either.

I've seen various accessories similar to that (another that really caught my attention was the HES Unidaptor) but I have honestly never seen any of those for sale; maybe if I lived in PAL territory I'd have better luck.

Interesting adapter! I've never seen that one before!

That adapter is really cool.

Why don't you just buy a Famicom instead of fooling with all that?

I really want an HES unidaptor. But buying a famicom is actually cheaper and much better.

Because then I'd have an NES with no use, a system that's so common it's impossible to sell because everyone and their grandmother owns one, never mind the cost of an AV mod along with ANOTHER converter just to play my NES carts.

It's an expensive endeavor for a handful of game carts, only one of which I own.

I think 80sFREAK has AV modded Famicoms for like $35 on his thread. Keep the NES for those carts. It's probably going to be tough to find one of those adapters. Didn't HES sell a lot in Australia? Maybe someone from there could help more.

Those adapters are incredibly rare and cost upwards of $50-70 bucks. You might as well buy an AV modded system cheap from 80SFREAK, like Duke.Togo has mentioned above  ;)

....and its always nice to have the real deal system, there's also a lot of games that do not work properly with adapters or may not even work at all. Who knows in the long run you might discover quite a few Famicom exclusive titles, there's a ton out there. It looks cool next to a US NES and is a cool conversation piece for friends who aren't in the know.

Oh I know they're expensive, but I was kind of hoping someone in a similar predicament came up with some sort of homebrew solution. Seems like I'm out of luck there.  :'(

Sorry if I came off as hostile, it's just... frustrating. I mean, I'd love to have a Famicom and all, but it's hard justifying buying another console when I kind of already have a variation of one here that works fine in most cases. Well, that and the fact I'm running out of room for consoles while the back of my monitor looks like some sort cyberpunk nightmare with all the systems I have hooked up to it already. ;D

Famicom is a teeny weeny sized system. an NES is about the size of 3 1/2 famicoms.

I just thought of this idea.....do you have a SNES? you can pick up the tri star 8 or one of its many variations.....Its basically so you can play nes and famicom through your SNES. I had one a LOOOOONG time ago and I recall it worked pretty decently.

Tri star 8 is like Super Game boy, but for Famicom?

Tri-Star 8 is for SFC.

I think what he means is if its like the super gameboy as in just an adapter that the carts fit in to.  If that is what he means then yes, its like a super gameboy adapter only much larger and flatter looking. Works with Famicom, NES, SNES/SFC. Theres also a version for Nintendo 64! It can also run a Disk System through it! Only problem is after a lot of usage they tend to get a little finnicky.

Unfortunately no SNES here; had one as a kid but it broke ages ago and to this day it's the only Nintendo system that simply stopped working on me. I would like to get an SFC in the future, but my priority is NES/Famicom right now.

Anyway, I bought senseiman's AV Famicom, pretty stoked to get it. Hopefully I can find someone that will want to "adopt" my front loader and pin converter so I can make back some of the money I spent on it.  :D

Haha, maybe when I get my next paycheck; I'm kind of low on personal funds for the next couple of weeks.  :P

Excellent choice, AV Famicom is great.
