I'm new in town, but I've gotten several recommendations to come here on my hunt for an AV famicom(Model 2). Paying anything less than the exorbitant prices on eBay works for me, just let me know what you're asking price is.
Any pointers for finding an AV famicom elsewhere?

I'm just thinking , as you can see from the board here lots of people are asking for AV Famicoms. Maybe try an AV modded famicom instead?
For an AV Famicom, I'd say that currently 100$ + shipping is a reasonable price.
Can you use regular NES controllers with a Famicom?
I'm trying to come up with a solid, long-lasting replacement for an original NES. a Model 2 NES would work, but then you have to go through the hassle of modding it for composite output.

I would say if you're after an AV famicom, just pay the $90+ shipping and get it done with. Remember, you get what you pay for, and the AV is solid as a rock.
Alternately, if you don't *need* to use NES controllers, look into getting a Twin Famicom. You can probably get one here for $35-50 without a working disk drive, and it uses AV outs as well. Then, if you ever decide you want to play FDS games and you're not afraid to get your hands dirty, you should be able to fix the drive fairly cheaply. If you decide to go that route, I can recommend a specific power adaptor for you that will work in the US.
Even better! Of course, my AN-505-RD cost a *little bit* more. But I'm still in lust with it, one month into our relationship.
A couple months ago, I got an AV famicom on here plus a game for $100 shipped if that helps your quest.

This is the best thing to do from experience, so much simpler in the long run.
If you're patient, you can easily score an AV Famicom from the BST forum for a reasonable price.

I believe you can use Nes controllers with the AV Famicom. Any other model would require modding.
I owned one of the newer top loading Nes consoles, but even after the much needed composite mod, the vertical lines drove me NUTS. Does the AV Famicom suffer from the same line problem?

You can use pretty much any NES controller with an AV Famicom, it has the same seven pin ports as its western siblings.
Also, no "jailbars" here, just a clean picture. Well, as clean as composite video can be. ;)
And with a simple mod you can use a nes zapper.
