Title: User locations
Post by: Frank_fjs on May 08, 2012, 07:00:06 pm
Is it possible to include user locations within the user information that appears on the left hand side of a forum post?

I ask as this would make it easier when browsing for sale threads. I know you can enter a user's profile to find out this information, but it would be more convenient if you could tell where a person was located with a quick glance.

99% for you will be international shipping anyway or do you have preferences where not to buy?

I enter my location for that reason.

Shipping is quite expensive from my country and I don't want to ship heavier items abroad.

(removed my former post)
A small country flag along the gender icon would be nice, although I don't know if the moderators have time to play with it.

I also like the idea of a small country flag. (http://i47.tinypic.com/ne9dfc.png) (http://i49.tinypic.com/20z5zs5.png)

Me too.

And I disagree with the Venus symbol being pink, I find that insulting.
I think they should have the same color... Make both pink.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I just think it would be easier if people's countries were more visibly displayed, I was hoping that this would be a simple feature of the forums that could be activated.

Possible, but I know that on a lot of forums the "location" field just becomes a joke.

I like this idea better because it takes up less room and can't become (much of) a joke because it's just a flag and a country name.  The hard part would be having to maintain a list of flags/countries.  You'd essentially have a "location field" where you could type whatever you want (and would not show up alongside your posts) and a "country field" where you would have to select your country from a dropbox; the country would be associated with a flag image which would appear alongside your posts.  I like this idea as long as there is a forum extension that handles most of the work for me ;D

It's curious how sensitive the Internet population is towards that sort of thing.  Maybe would could replace the Venus/Mars symbols with some girl/boy Famicom sprites? Peach and Mario?  Zelda and Link?  Roll and Rock?

I like the idea with male/female Famicom sprites!

Why? Are you a woman? Why don't we leave that up to our female members here?

I think the flag display idea is a good one. Are there any Famicom/NES games that use flags? Preferably smaller than Off-Road:

The only one that I can think of is Stick Hunter, but that only has 8 flags. :-\

8-bit style flags would be cool, but there's no game that is going to have enough flags.

No bullshit guys, just make your own flags in MS Paint, the effect would be the same :P

I would use these flags: http://famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ (http://famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/) .  I don't feel like MS-Painting 247 flags.

One thing I've noticed with those flags is that rather than have the standard UK flag, it has the flags for the seperate countries. I don't have a problem with that myself though. Also, the Northern Ireland flag seems to be missing. ???

There is a UK flag in the set (gb.png).

What flag would Northern Ireland have?  Apparently there are Northern Ireland flag issues (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Ireland_flags_issue)?  According to that article, the Union Jack would be the official flag, which is already in the set.

Honest question: would it be offensive to have just a UK option, or should the four countries be listed as their own option (instead of or in addition to a UK option)?

We'll be lucky if UglyJoe manages to find an easy way to display them, don't bother him with creating own ones. Sure, they can be unique, but to draw 247 of them? Sure, we can do continent flags only ;D (I want to be Antarctica!)

Yes, that would be very cool.  :D Better than pink Venus.

I would have both. I would have a UK flag and flags for the four countries too.
I suppose you will place a combobox ("dropdown") next to the "Location" field, with a list of countries?
So people can still enter their location free text, and have a flag if they want to.

For real?

at least here in the US (and Britain too I think, maybe Australia...eh Im gonna say all English territories), light blue represents male babies and pink represents female babies. Been like that forever....nothing insulting about it and whenever the signs are portrayed in American media, this is what color they turn up as.

Only since the 1940's, actually.  Before then it was the other way around.

Yep. ^ this is true. Also there shouldnt be anything sexist about it. Just because you're associating a color with a gender's symbol doesn't mean you think more or less of the gender itself. Men and women are different and i don't see why the color of the symbols should bother anyone...

Country flags have been implemented.  You can pick your country in your profile and it will appear next to your posts.  The field is optional.  I'm open to suggestions for changing the way it gets displayed.

I'll work on the gender sprites next.

But there is a stigma attached to the color pink.  Ever notice how pink is overtly girly and yet blue is not overtly manly?

Allow me to be the first one to abuse the new feature.

Edit: Fun fact, there are no permanent residents in Vatican City, except for the Pope.

Ended up using Rock and Roll for the gender icons, since Roll is like the only female FC character that isn't pink :P

Will you make those little popup tooltip, or whatever they are called? I always use them... For the flag and for the "Gender" icon.

It may not be necessary to have the word "Gender", perhaps it would be enough to simply have the icon and the tooltip that says "Male / female", "boy / girl", or what you want to call it...

I might have prefered to have the female icon a princess because all girls want to be princesses. But I won't complain.  :D

Now after I got the chance to see the female icon I do like it.
However, I still think a little tooltip would be useful... :-X

You need to set your country in your profile.  Click on the (http://www.famicomworld.com/forum/Themes/famicomworld/images/english/profile.gif) button at the top of the page and then click on the "Forum Profile Information" link on the left.  Find the "Please select your country:" setting and choose Bangladesh.  Click the "Change profile" button at the bottom of the page and you should be all set.
