Title: Help requested-Graphics for a homebrew game.
Post by: dizzy9 on May 11, 2012, 01:49:24 pm
Hi,
I'm a programmer(not really good one, but still...) who, together with two other guys(one is designer, while the second is musician), are putting efforts together in order to create a Famicom\NES homebrew.
The game is clone of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Wants_to_Be_a_Millionaire%3F).
Coding and music is mostly done, now is a time for Graphics.Since my art can easily be called Programmer art (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=programmer+art), as proven Here (http://nesdevcompo.nintendoage.com/contest/)(It's "Melanchony Of Existance Chapter 0").
So I was asking on some sites for help but to not avail.
If anyone's interested, Here's a screenshot with in game window:

Game is bilingual, english spelling error will be fixed later.
Here's some tips about NES Graphics limitations. (http://youtu.be/Hq4XT44YnPg?t=3m25s)
You can use any tool (http://www.zophar.net/utilities/graphutil.html) to edit GFX.

Just a thought - would be illegal to use or modify preexisting sprite work? There's a lot of sites that feature NES sprites such as the spriter's resource.

Hi, Satoshi.
Once upon a time, I asked (http://nesdev.parodius.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=8342) about ripping sprites from other games.(I'm "Denine" there).
And it looks like it's bad idea-people may confuse the game for a hack of other game.
At the other hand, there's no WWTBM game for NES, right?
I think it's not illegal to use ripped GFX for non-commercial game, but I'll probably end up releasing the game with my own graphics.
Still, thanks for your concern. ;)

May I suggest you look for a top-tier interface artist rather than just a spriter?
You can probably find someone who has more talent with desktop publishing or web design that would relish a chance to become involved with pixel art.  Try scouring pixeljoint.com for interest and exceptional work.

I think that would have a huge benefit considering the nature of the game.  Interface design and GUIs are one of those things that nobody necessarily notices when done well but when not are a huge stumble point.

You have the TV show and other games to model on, but why not take the chance to do something more retro and aesthetic?
