Title: Botched tristar compadibilty mod
Post by: ulera on June 17, 2012, 01:41:58 pm
Anyway... I have a tristar for super nintendo which allows it to play NES and Famicom games. But the problem is it's not compadible with games like Starfox or the super gameboy.

So I tried to mod it using this guide here: http://web.archive.org/web/20080830004000/http://home.freeuk.net/markk/Consoles/Tri-Star_SGB_fix.txt

(Link is from web archive do to site being down)

Using pics from here as a reference: http://web.archive.org/web/20100914201716/http://home.freeuk.net/markk/Consoles/Tri-Star_pics.html

So I fire up my tristar with my super gameboy in and... it STARTS! Only problem is, the sound is VERY distorted and several octaves too low. The fact it even starts and runs means I accomplished something but it is unplayable it sounds so bad. What did I do wrong? Or right but incomplete?

I assume the reason why you're using your Super Gameboy together with your Tristar is because your Super Gameboy is a PAL-versioned one and your console is NTSC (or vice versa)? Perhaps that's why you get distorted sound (mixing hardware of different regions), rather than the problem being with your Tristar?

Nope. Both are NTSC. I just don't want to have to unhook my tristar everytime I want to play Starfox or SMRPG or Gameboy.

Could it just be a bad solder connection?

Could be... Does Starfox work?

Just tried it... strangely it worked 100% flawlessly. This seems to be a problem exclusive to the super gameboy. (I'm assuming, I don't have any other super FX games to test besides star fox)

It's not my super gameboy either... it works fine when I plug it directly into my SNES
