Title: FINISHED - 1262 Famicom games for imbnes - tested ALL
Post by: theelf on July 05, 2012, 04:14:55 pm
Hi!  first sorry my english

I really like the Famicom emulator for Playstation 1, imbnes, because i can get native resolution, and great RGB output

Beside this, the PSOne is a very small console, and i bought a great gamepad, that give me a very real famicom experience  :)

This is the two gamepads i bought for my PSOne

Ok, but the problem is the roms. Imbnes is not 100% compatible, and the main problem, is that if you open a rom that is not supported, the emulator hangs the PSOne

The rombank utility to create the ISO, filter the roms with unsupported mappers, but a lot of games, that have supported mapper,  not work at all, hanging the PSOne

Then i spend like a week, testing EVERY rom in my list, filtering the working ones, from the no working ones

I test more than 1200 roms by hand, playing a little each one, for test that works ok

Here is my final list (at least for now),  hope is good for someone!!!!  899 working roms

Every rom, have no more than 28 characters (to fit in screen list), and have a description

(U) = American rom
(J)= Japanese rom
(E)= European rom
(EN) = Japanese rom translated to english
(ES) = american or japanese rom translated to spanish
(Unl) = Unlicenced game
(Ch)=Chinesse game

Hi, i exclude barcode world cause i don't find any way to play it with regular controllers. I think I exclcude a couple of similar others

For most  glitchy roms,  i try different versions like (U), (J), (E), (o), (b)..etc , until i realize that for sure is problem of the game+emulator, not the dump, but of course, im writing this list, because i think someone can help me to correct some of my mistakes

I play more than 1200 games, for sure i forget some, or mistake others...

Im building this CD, because is the most easy way to get RGB for my famicom games, with native resolution.

But have all games in single place (one CD) is very usefull too  ;)

Another good side, is that i can play a lot of translated or unreleased games, and use game genie codes, i like this emulator for this, very easy to do

Of course, the first one,  is a Hori pocket controller,  the second one, with two analogs, is a  Hori pocket analog controller

I bought both for play famicom games, and I can confirm that are perfect,  the feeling is very similar, and now i use like regular PSOne controllers  :)

P.S. why people so crazy about RGB output? Does it give you better gameplay or higher resolution or enchanced stereo sound effects oops, that was about sound :)

Mostly because RGB is the best looking analog output you can get from any of the older consoles. It's pretty much like an accurate emulator would output.

You are right, is incredible the quality RGB give.  Amazing in CRT TV and  for me, the only way to play in modern TFT

After play any console in RGB,  simply i cant do again in AV.... not possible!!!  ;D

Quote1)make the table "title" "real mapper name" "PRG size" "CHR size"
2)test dumps on real hardware(Powerpak does not count)
3)DO NOT trust emulators - it's just another programm, trying to recreate what was made in a hardware by avaliable descriptions, but not tech docs from Nintendo.

Hi! thanks for reply

1) I dont find any utility to do this, ideas? thanks
2) how can i do this? some easy way? sadly, i cant spend much time on this
3) well, i tested more than 1000 roms.. emulator at least until i found other option, is fastest way, that why,  if this list is useful for someone, is best to attention on the non working ones, and help with this ones

The working ones... well...they already  work  :) :)  jaja

Oh, bad luck for you!!! if u wanna play this game in RGB in a CRT, you will need to find a real cart + modded famicom, or make a PC + emulator, and find a graphics card that can output correct resolution using soft15k or similar

For my is not a big deal, since i never play this kind of games, i don't like shooting games, I feel more sad for Batman return of the joker, or Flintstones rescue...., that are some of my favorites games, and not work

Oh, i forget, because im playing this on a PSOne, is possible to play Gradius 2 in the Gradius Deluxe Pack for psx  ;)

Oh by the way, i made the cover for the box... jeje

If a rom works on a couple independent emulators and the powerpak, the rom is fine.  Making a physical cart for every test is a gigantic waste of effort and time.  Heck, if it were my emulator, a single working example in another program would be enough to qualify delving into the code to make sure I'm doing things correctly (eventually..  unless it's a hack or translation, then I would need multiple as above).

I think the same, i test in a couple of emulators, and if the rom work ok at least in one without problems, then the dump is OK for me

I today i found two more working roms

2 crade it's better to have real cart, isn't it?

Oh, sadly the imbnes development stop in 2003, no way to any kind of bug report

The imbnes version 1.3.3 is the last one, then if something not work now.... will not work forever  ;D

About real carts, I'm more a gamer, than a collector, then I'm very friend of flash carts or emulators

I have some famicom carts, i think maybe 500 or 600 but never play much them, that's why, besides RGB, im doing this CD compilation, more easy to play

Well sure it's "better", but it's probably not required, and when you are talking about hundreds of roms to test many of which could all require different mappers and hardware, it's not really realistic in my opinion.  It's even better to send in a complete patch of the source that fixes the issue, but it's also better to have a list of games that are known to work in fceux and fail in your emulator than to have nothing because we don't have anyone willing to work full time making physical carts to test with for months and months on end...  This is just my opinion of course :)

Post Merge: July 06, 2012, 07:55:52 pm

I would say it would certainly be very helpful to have the games grouped by mapper.  This should not be too difficult / time consuming if you go to bootgod's database at the link provided, it has the ability to list all games of a certain board type or mapper.  Likely many of the ones that don't work will be the same mapper and therefore the same bug will probably fix all of them, so if it was my app, I would prioritize and look at the mapper that has the most games broken first.

The other thing that might be helpful is to list the CRC code of the rom (and/or seperate PRG/CHR crcs).  That way the developer can easily tell if the rom they are testing with is the exact same one that you produced the bug with.  I think many emulators will tell you the CRC code every time you run them.  I'm sure there are also several ways to produce a crc listing of an entire directory or directory structure.  My copynesl program can do this for you, including seperate PRG/CHR ones when combined with a shell file if you happen to use Linux.
https://bitbucket.org/crade/copynesl

You can also compare the CRC of your ROM against the CRC listed in the database if you wish to help you validate your ROMS.

Edit: Actually, copynesl can tell you the mapper of a rom, too, so you could build a simple script with that app that would give you the CRCs and mappers of all your files together.

Edit 2: That will only tell you the mapper number from the file's header, though.  The info in the database will tell you also the actual board, which would be way better to use.

Oh, your utility looks very nice, thanks, but only windows here,  i try to compile in gygwin, but not good luck

Strange error.  I will have to try cygwin sometimes.  The part of the application that communicates with the copynes needs POSIX, so it doesn't work in windows, but It used to compile in cygwin at one point...

Anyway, there are tons of applications that will produce a CRC for you, and like I said I think many emulators tell you the CRC every time you run the game.

But if having mappers, CRC or PRG/CHR will help someone to help me with the non working roms, i can do one by one, but ONLY if someone want to do the work with me

If we were going to do an organized undertaking, the adding some fields for confirmed working on real hw field to bootgod's db would probably be the way to go...

Some games run on mappers that are very similar to other mappers but are just tweaked a little.  If your emulator doesn't support mapper 40 but does support mapper 4, changing all the ones using mapper 40 to mapper 4 may get them to run on that emulator (they may just run slightly incorrectly).  For the emulator developer, this means you can implement partial support for that new mapper just by pretending it's the old one..
Unfortunately, I don't know an easy way to get a list of what mappers are like that..

Also, if you look up each of your games in the database and make sure that your ROM file has the correct mapper, that would weed out any that are just wrong.

If you can get a list of which mappers your emulator claims to support from somewhere, that might help.

Any / all emulators will generally support 0-4, since those are the core ones.  Anything with numbers over 20 I would be suspicious of, and anything over 60 even more so.  There is a limited number of possible numbers that will fit in the space allocated in the ines header, and emulator developers kind of took it upon themselves to assign them so although it doesn't happen often, sometimes with the later numbers a number could mean one board to one emulator and another board to another.. :(

Anyway, with some of the later numbers, it might be possible to look up information about the mapper and see if it's possible to fudge it by pretending it's a simpler mapper.

I know that Gemfire, Bandit Kings, and Lempereur (and probably a few others) are mmc5 (mapper 5), which is difficult to emulate and many specialized emulators don't bother with it, so probably that isn't a bug so much as a design decision not to implement mmc5

ROTK2 is MMC5 as well, so it should be in the unsupported mapper list same with nobonaga 2 and 3
How did you decide which items to put in the unsupported mapper category vs the supported but fails?  Probably if you look up all the mappers, several more would have the same mappers as the unsupported ones

ROTK 1 and Genghis Khan are MMC1 (mapper1) though, there is no excuse for those not working

Sadly i have two problems now, first, no time to play much, and second a 56k internet connection... download packages is a pain

Ok, about the roms

I already finished testing the more than 900 working roms, then i made a ISO and share on internet

But i keep testing the non working ones,

Answering your question,   imbnes support  0,1,2,3,4,7,9,11,34,66,71 mappers

and about ROTK 1 and Genghis Khan....

I test Genghis Khan first,  because i see that both games are from same company, they look have same problem

Aoki Ookami to Shiroki Mejika - Genghis Khan (J).nes  >  NOT working
Aoki Ookami to Shiroki Mejika - Genghis Khan (J) [h1].nes > WORKING WELL
Genghis Khan (U).nes  >  NOT working

ok, using google,  [h1] means "hack", then is a hacked version

next, i open the roms in nestopia, and this is the info i get

QuoteAoki Ookami to Shiroki Mejika - Genghis Khan (J).nes

it look like the only difference about the NON working, and the working one, are that the hacked version, NOT have reference to ANY chip...

I need to learn how to hack the roms and do this...

In imbnes, the USA and Japanese normal version of Genghis Khan  only give a black screen....

greetings

I don't have the famicom genghis cart, but that US rom's CRC is right and matches the one I dumped off my cart and also the CRC listed on bootgod's db.  I would say that one looks like a bug in the MMC1 implementation in that emulator to me...  Can you confirm that the ines header is correct?  Should be mapper 1, horizontal mirroring, batterybacked yes, trained no.

Some emulators will autocorrect the mirroring for you if it's wrong in the header, so sometimes a rom with the wrong mirroring set will work in one emulator and fail in another.  nestopia probably has a way to tell you the mirroring...  I know fceux tells it to you on boot of the rom.

The hacked version has a different CRC, which means the ROM is different so who knows what changes they made to it..

Ok, thats cool,  your words gave me a good idea

I open both Japanese roms, the original one,  and the hacked one  in a hex editor, and found the differences

I replace one difference,  test rom... replace another... test again.... until... the non  working Japanese rom.. WORKS!!

Then i open the US Genghis Khan rom, and found the same content... replace, and now i have a WORKING US rom!!!

just i need to replace  a "26" with a  "00"

I dont have ANY idea what i replace... but it works!!

Just a 26 with a 00.....

Rotk has a selector icon that should point to new game to start and if you push down or select it moves to load.  the y/n questions are all answered by pressing left for y and right for n

Ok, good news, i update the game list with:

Ch - Chinesse roms

And more Japanese games

Now the list grows until a total of 1263 working games!!

I can't play Doraemon and Wai Wai World 2? That's one of the largest reasons I'm emulating for a PSX in the first place. Fuck this shit.

Sierrus, we're glad to get new members, but please watch your language.

If you have complaints, make them with the makers of the emulator, not with the person who spent dozens of hours testing ROMs.

Yeah, no need for the anger, Sierrus. Not to mention the fact that a "PSX" is a DVR...
