Title: OUYA anyone?
Post by: Kiddo on July 11, 2012, 10:47:49 am
Anyone hear about this new OUYA console that's coming out?

Here is the kickstarter project: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console)

Only time can tell if an open source video game console will stay alive competing with the other console giants, but I like how it's presented as a "certain" step back in console gaming. The low price tag of 99$ per system might help it well along though, as well as most of the gaming content for it will be free, but we've yet to see if any major developers will make games for it.

Anyway, I just put down an order for one with an extra controller. Guess I've wasted 150$ on more stupid things in my lifetime :)

What do you guys think about the OUYA?

It looks interesting... since it's 'open source' I hope the app it runs on will be available on more platforms than OUYA itself... my phone already has all those capabilities and more.

I'd consider shelling out money for it when it's released, but since it's already funded I have no reason to give them an interest free loan for a year (the system won't be released until 2013).

Even if no major titles are announced for it, android already has a plethora of emulators for classic systems (up through PSX). It'll be a nifty little box to play with.

I hope the makers don't run away with the money they receive.  ;D

At first I thought it was a bit mad - but will keep an eye on it and take a look later down the line.  I think they need to be careful that it has a long-term reason for existence, but I hope they can find their own space in the market.  People say the industry is a nasty place and tjhis and that but evereything that's in place now is because it works.

I guess what I'm saying is, I wouldn't want a home console version of the appstore if it meant taking that same content and putting it there - but at the same time if this is how indie developers can get games across to a mass market then that's gotta be a good thing.  The current onsole model has high costs just to get content up there and a strict process, so you can't just stick something you made for newgrounds with a few bugs, up on the indie channel or WiiWare for example.

This console is supposed to be fully hackabe and i can't wait to play some ScummVM games on it :)

Really?  You'd pay $100 to play scumm games on it?  You can get a Wii and do that...

- It's legally hackable
- Hackable
- Online gaming can and will have cheaters
- Plays mobile phone games' quality

Honestly, what kind of game developer would want to invest their money on a console that's legally hackable and would see little to no profit coming off of it.

So far that seems the big question, the way I see it.  No market = no games essentially, unless they can make enough from indies.  If they can, it's gotta be enough to support a full production run of consoles, something the Dreamcast couldn't do in the end (to put it in persepctive).

Ok there are diffferences in production costs and having a global distribution model, but still...

For $99, I'd be happy if all it was used for is an emulator box, and I could retire the ModBox.

Not a bad idea if this little cube box could install all emulators, roms and whatnot it'd be perfectly awesome and playing old games upscaled to HD is said to be pretty damn nice.

Other than this, I still wonder about the devs... :upsetroll:

Also, they announced that it will support Onlive at launch. I may just have to get this thing!

It would be nice to see actual prototype images, not Illustrator's designs.  That controller doesn't look very ergonomic with the straight edges...

To be fair, the PlayStation handles aren't curved and it does a decent job. In proportion to the buttons/analog sticks, and handles look huge, which will be good for my hands.  ;D

True, but the handles are shorter for a reason.  I know it's only a bit, but handles that long can't really be straight else it gets uncomfortable to hold.  Imagine holding it at that pose and you'll see what I mean, your hands won't be relaxed and pointing up, but like a triangle.  Wrist fatigue.
In the Kickstarter vid they said they did a lot of tests but I'm not convinced, sounds and looks like it's quite obviously still in pre-prod.

I hope to be proven wrong of course!

We'll find out in March (hopefully). There is a usb port, so hopefully usb gamepads will be supported.

March?!?!  Yikes.  USB ports will still need compatible software.  Sounds like it's all based on a PC anyway.

Oh boy, I can't wait. New pics, by the way. Ouya logo moved to the handle, and buttons are now labelled OUYA.

Funny seeing a thread about this here, but I suppose it shouldn't be.

I contributed a while ago. Should be an interesting toy.

I would still like to see actual pics, not weekly design iterations from a computer, but hey.

The announcement?
Final Fantasy 3 HD was announced by Square Enix for Ouya :)

Call me an idiot...but I gave to the Kickstarter. I'm getting the Kickstarter-edition console. My reasoning is that I'm just as much of a collector as I am a gamer, so whether or not the thing is successful isn't too big of a deal. The only thing I have to worry about is if it actually gets made. My rationalization with that is that they planned to do it with $950,000. They'd have to seriously fuck something up to not get it out the door with over six times that amount.

It's a good investment I'd say.  Highest profile Kickstarter stunt so far, so it' a good punt and I really don't think you'll lose your money unless it bombs and even then years later it'll be worth a lot, it's already part of history.

I just read through the Terms of Use again, and it says that if rewards are not given out, they're supposed to give refunds, so I feel a little more assured.

QuoteKickstarter does not offer refunds. A Project Creator is not required to grant a Backer's request for a refund unless the Project Creator is unable or unwilling to fulfill the reward.

So now it's Ouya or bust! They're apparently redesigning the D pad too, thank god.

On a side note, my dad thought it was a pencil sharpener when he first saw the thing.

Namco Bandai announced support with pacman, galaga, and tekken. I don't care if its a thirty year old game. GALAGA, BITCHES!

Title: Ouya 2013: Oyeah! or Oynoo! ?
Post by: FamicomRetroGamer on August 09, 2012, 03:36:38 pm
Update: http://youtu.be/s80z4jOgMek

The little box is basically as powerful as a Tegra 3 Smart Phone, but it has gotten huge support already by various game companies, just to name one, Namco Bandai.

For me it's a No, I won't be getting this not for because it's legally hackable but due to the fact that it's digital-only.

I'm guessing the future of gaming will all be digital-only, so I'll be stuck in the past.

Another thread? Ok. It's a yeah for me. Brown Ouya ALL THE WAY.

I just had an idea last. night. If they allow emulators for the thing, you can plug in a retrode and enjoy your SNES and Genesis games on your Ouya!

It's a no-go for me, as well.  I'll stick to my Wii (and hopefully WiiU) and be happy with that.  I don't need to hack my console, play cell-phone games, or watch all kinds of crazy pay-per-view channels on my TV.  I'm seriously okay with not being overly connected all the time.

This is about the only thing that has piqued my interest in the console.  I'm still highly unlikely to buy one, but I'm not going to say never just in case there's some more really cool old RPG's that get ports to this.

I don't know how Ouya got more money than what was needed because just by looking at the hardware specs anyone would know it's as powerful as a smartphone..

This crappy PC I use can run retro emulators so I don't need to spend money on a smartphone-box that does about the same I'd want. And for video/audio I've got a TDT/360/PS3 to cover it up.

For those who'll buy it, enjoy it.
