Think about it. Super Mario Sunshine relied on water, Wind Waker had you sailing, and Pokemon R/S/E had much more water than any other game. Plus, the GCN's codename was dolphin.
But Famicom had Adventure Island and Wii has Wii Sports Resort...
The virtual boy had water world.
Very true, but the movie or game had no islands!

Pffft, I know. With your logic, you could say the NES was also tropical. Jaws had a lot of water! And land!
But really, the gamecube felt very tropical. Which is pretty nice when you grow up in Fort Lauderdale 8) I also think that had a lot to do with me being more receptive to Mario Sunshine than a lot of people. Beaches, harbors, and such weren't completely foreign concepts to me.
Not to mention Wave Racer. There were also several tropical tracks in F-Zero GX so I get what you're saying.
Mario Sunshine is a truly excellent game, that's for sure.
I liked it way better then galaxy. Galaxy was more technically impressive but I hated how linear all the levels were.
Immediately these two commercials came to mind:
Super Mario Advance 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pArjd8rYeV4)
Super Mario Sunshine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7ostUyJidQ)
...and the dolphin living inside each GameCube's silicon (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/04/gallery-silicon-art/?pid=1650). ;D
Man that US trailer is just, well it looks like they were trolling. Can't believe somewhere people sat round a table and all agreed.

I wish the background of that sunshine commercial actually made it in the game. It's catchy.
