Title: Russian Famiclone compatibility issues
Post by: crade on October 01, 2012, 02:26:59 pm
Hey guys, I have a Russian famiclone,
version KL-235 I believe..

And it is very fuzzy and in black and white on my TV.  I think the Russian clones were PAL format, right?
My TV is a newish LCD TV, and I thought PAL stuff should work on it..
Does anyone have any experience with getting them to work with North American TV's and/or power?
Anyone know if this is normal, or if my clone might be damaged?

Thanks for any help!

Are you using the AV or RF connection? If you're using RF that's probably the reason you're not getting a good color picture - usually PAL support is only through the AV inputs, not antenna. You can usually test PAL support with a cheap DVD player that allows for selectable NTSC/PAL output if you want to be sure your TV is compatible.

What kind of AC adapter are you using? Russian mains voltage is 220V AC.

I'm just using a famicom compatible adapter..  The adapter that came with it puts out 9V DC 500mA, the one I am using is 9V DC 800 mA.
I am plugging it into the AV slot.  Actually, on the older TV it outputs in black and white plus with scroll issues.  On the newer TV, the picture looks fine, but only in Black and White.
My TV is a Sony KDL-32L4000..  According to the specs I found on it, it's supposed to support the PAL colour system, but I'm not convinced :)

First thing I would be doing is confirming whether your TV supports a PAL signal, not all TV's do.

Also check on PCB, if there is place for trimmer next to the crystal - frequency might be slightly off, so your TV can not decode color. You can simulate this issue with original Famicom

Thanks for the advice everyone.  I'll try to find another PAL device to test with, and if that is working properly, I'll try to see if there is a trimmer to adjust the frequency.
