Post by: ulera on October 12, 2012, 01:50:22 pm
I've seen several options, can anybody whose tried a couple recommend the cheapest/best option?

I have a FRENCH n64 , you just need 3 wires and 3x75ohm resistors and you get a rgb-capable machine :) (has the same S-RGB chip as the snes jr)
Other than that an early us model perhaps? but you need an amp like the 7314 for that.

I'm in North America so it would have to be an NTSC console.

so it's just the early ntsc models or maybe some japanese ones,  I have no idea about them though...
here's what's needed for the us ones: http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/ntsc-nintendo-64-rgb/

you can get a pal console and a converter for your carts for ntsc -> pal and use a US power supply and it will be putting out rgb so it doesnt matter since rgb isnt ntsc or pal its rgb. That is what i would do but its up to you to find what is best for your situation.

not all PAL consoles can output RGB though, only the early French models can

The best option I've found for N64 RGB mods has been the THS7314 amp. I've modded about three so far including my own and the picture looks great. The THS7314 is fairly small and might a bit hard to work with because it's actually a surface-mount chip, but the results are worth it.

Sent the link to the guy I paid to do my 2600 s-video mod and he quoted the job at $70. Does that sound reasonable? I don't really know what a fair cost would be.

Sadly that sounds lots to me... don't you have anyone else to turn to? Materials on this job is 6-7eur tops, IIRC I payed 5eur per 7314 and 0.5 for the DIP8 adapter... you are in the US, right?

Yes. He said it looked lime a tricky job and that the $70 was for labor.

hardly a risky job.... unless he can't solder small parts... maybe someone in the US can help you, I suggest you post on Assembler Forums (http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/forum.php) asking for a person to mod your n64, IIRC I have seen already modded systems going for your man's asking price

Is this something a beginner could do? I have MINOR soldering experience, my iron is probably too large however and would have to be replaced with a more.delegate one, heck, if someone reassembled the components for me I could probably attach it myself pretty simply.

well I woudln't count it as a beginner's job but a job of medium skills.... if you practice and have a 15-20W iron + good leaded solder then you will be good to go :)

if you think you can make it I can solder you something like this :

just imagine a 7314 instead of the 7374 pictured (7314 is 4x2 , 7374 is 7x2) so there will be unused pins but the adapter will be easier to work with... I can even add you the cables/resistors/caps and you will just need to solder on the motherboard. If you think you can manage it then PM me  ;D

I could do it for $48 including return shipping.
