Title: I just beat Chrono Trigger for the first time!
Post by: Epic_Lotus on October 19, 2012, 09:45:29 am
Well, I turned in pretty late last night so that I could finish up the game.  It's the first RPG I've beaten since I played FF13 two years ago.  I have to say, Chrono Trigger really does live up to its hype.  It was fun, challenging, the storyline was engaging, and I think I might actually give it a run through a second time sooner than later to get myself a different ending (I got the "normal" ending).

Also, I played the Virtual Console version.  Has anyone here played the Playstation or the DS re-releases?  I'm curious if it's worth playing on those systems for the extra dungeons or the animated cut-scenes.

I played the DS re-release for a bit, but it felt a bit clunky so I left it for another time.
I've not played the original, but I think I'd rather play it on the Super Famicom.

I liked the DS version a lot more than the PS1 version. All the benefits of the added content with no load times.

I'd like to replay it sometime, but I no longer own a copy of it.

So should I jump straight in on DS?  There's something about playing SNES on a big TV that I prefer, truth be told.  I loved the Dragon Quest remakles on DS though.

Sorrry Lotus not meaning to hi-jack the thread, just interested as I am currently at the place where you were before playing/finishing it!

I see no hi-jacking going on   ???

I was also thinking the DS version might be a lot of fun to play.  I was reading that all of the pop-up boxes during fights are moved to the second screen, which would actually be brilliant, as that was probably my only complaint about the gameplay.  The boxes got in the way a lot, especially during boss fights with large sprites.

Algo, were the animated cutscenes on the PS version any good?  Are they like scenes played out, or just a couple of quick character shots that are animated?  Load times are definitely annoying when you're used to the instantaneous loads of a cart-game, but I might give it a try at some point if it makes it a bit like watching an anime.

I'd go for the DS for sure. If the load times weren't there, the PS one would be great... but that was the most painful PS game I ever played because of it. @_@; It'd load for 2-5 seconds every time you opened the pause menu. Terrible. But I did love every minute of the game despite that.

@Epic The cutscenes are good... kinda... short, little animations of some of the key story points. There's one when you meet up with Robo, I believe. They're nothing to really get too excited about, and you could probably just get away with watching them on youtube and be about as well off, since you played a stellar version already.

And I do believe the battle menus were on the bottom screen, as the menus did seem to get in my way on the PS version. It's really a good port... although I can't comment on the stuff that's additional from the PS version. I didn't get a chance to play any.

I imported the US DS version, but can't find the right timing to start it. :/
One day...
