Title: Adding NES ports to my famicom
Post by: DigitalxxxFr34k on December 04, 2012, 07:51:07 pm
okay so this question has most likely been asked many many many times, so i apologize if i am posting something that has already been posted,  so i bought a famicom from a really good guy on here, and i was very happy with the condition its in, but i had a small minor issue, the controller ports were in the back, so i did a minor case mod and relocated them to the front, but there is still 1 problem, the damn cord is too short, yeah i could easily  pull my system off the shelf and chillax on the couch, but it looks soo good on the shelf :) and i rather not put it on the carpet, just the simple fact i don't like any of my games or consoles on the floor!

hmm how to explain this, and the question is it possible? and if it is can some one give me the pin outs.

Lets start with the Famicom controller, the cord part of it, connect by this little plug inside the system, needless to say i wanna use that plug on the end of the controller cord so i can have the option to unplug  the NES controller port for whatever reason, (i do have spare famicom controller  board with cord), i want to wire up the female connector from a nes extension controller cord, to that little connector at the end of the wire of the famicom controller so i can plug them into the mother board and nicely mount them into the shell and then solder the rest of the extension cord with the male end to the  spare famicom controller boards i have (unless if a NES controller guts would fit inside the famicom controller shell)  anyways i think you guys get it... i hope if its possible let me know please!

Also any one live in the States that has done the A/V mod? if so contact me id like it done maybe we can work something out! :)

I honestly think it'd be better to have just the NES controller ports coming out as there's less of a headache to deal with that way. I would normally say to make a controller converter using the expansion port on the front, but I've found that there are some games that are incompatible with that setup (SMB 2/SM USA included). By wiring controller ports to where the original controllers plug in you avoid that issue.

Also, I've AV modded a few Famis and I'll be sending you a PM shortly.

IC that could be an issue, hmm so the serial port is the only way, now see i kinda want it built into my famicom, also having player 1 and player 2 port... if possible,  instead of using the port of the serial adapter, what if i fed the controllers back to the back of the console, and hard wired the ports internally to the pin outs on the serial port?

Wiring them directly to the expansion port pins would give you the same results as building a controller converter, which means games like Super Mario USA still won't work. I would suggest wiring the NES controller ports to the same spots as the internal controllers so you won't have those compatibility issues.

well thats what i was asking if was possible :)  using the internal controller socket and wiring it to a NES plug, to make it so i can plug in  nes controllers, or even hell keep the Famicom controllers plugged in normally and just solder the nes port  to the pin outs, that way i can use both if i wanted to just in case i run across problems with a game :)

You could have both, but then you run into the problem of trying to fit the cables for both the controllers and NES controller ports. What you could do is drill holes for the NES controller ports, assuming you're using cut-up extension cables for this, and then you won't have to worry about cramming both through the back.

You should just take nes controller and switch the shell with the famicom ones (their insides are the same no Comparability issues)
then snip the end off the nes controller and hard wire it to the P1 port  and you can do the same with P2 it does have more wires though for the mic

It's going to look like shit having extra controllers hard wired to the system that are not needed

but then again you said you modded the system for the controllers to come out the front I'm sure that's real pretty ::)

I don't think that's what he wants, he wants ports so you can use a variety of NES controllers. Not sure how hardwiring NES controllers would help.

The only reason I suggested to hard wire an NES controller was for the longer cord but if he's looking to be able to swap out perfrerals then yes I guess he would have to mount some female controller ports
